Quake turns 25 years old today!

Happy Hour Drinking GIF

IdTech starting from Quake more or less set the basis for some of today's biggest games and franchises.

It's true! I can't believe it's been 25 years...

What an amazing experience that game was and is. Along with its mods!

NOW GIVE US A BEAUTIFUL AND PROPER REMAKE YOU COWARDS!

Never really played the first Quake, which is strange cause i love ID games.
But nevertheless Happy Birthday.

Quake, Quake 64 deathmatch are so fucking amazing.

I using GLPRO450 here because my notebook is super old now.

Quake LAN parties back in the day were legendary.

I also played the single player story for the first time last year or so. Excellent game.

I ended up buying it multiple times over the years but this was the first game I pirated, the beta leak of off AOL back in 95 or so over a phone modem. Took me about a week to download something like 20 floppy disk images or whatever. Used AOL Usenet 😂

And if they go for another game please get Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross onboard again, it was painful hearing the shitty sounds from Doom 3 (ughhh that pistol sound haunts my dreams more than the monsters). After hearing everything from the earlier E3 gameplay with Trent doing basically all of the audio from the main sound effects to the ambient noise (there was a mod restoring the pistol sound effects pretty early on at least) the audio in the actual game just really sucked.

Now that it's owned by Microsoft they should really try to push it for a new Quake game, dump a bunch of money at his door and get him to produce the damned soundtrack and bring back the original.

Fingers crossed for a new Quake in the future.
I can still feel those Quake (I, II, III Arena) boxes/cds in my hands as a kid; running it on my Pentium/Voodoo Master-race machine.

25 years...damn. I played this on MPlayer.com and Heat.net back in the day when I was 12,13 at the time, so much nostalgia for slipgate, the arena maps, team fortress, q-ball. It felt so great to climb from being utterly trash at the game and thinking I needed to buy a gamepad so I could look around more easily, to finally adapting to keyboard and mouse and getting decent even with my 300 ping. All of the sudden cable modems became a thing and anyone with that kind of internet connection and sub 100 ping would basically be gods amongst men.

Would love a proper remake of this game

Inspired by DFs Retro video, I made a wallpaper for all those who love Quake.

This video is also one of my favourites:

Edit: My first post. Quake <3

G.O.A.T, God Tier, potential candidate to win Game of my Lifetime when the ballot is cast after I'm dead many years from now.

I remember playing the original leaked Mac Quake, Hack Quake, on my old Power Macintosh at 320x240 with scanlines just to get ~15 frames per second in deathmatch AND I WAS FINE WITH IT.

Once the official Mac port came out along with QuakeWorld my mind was blown about about playing multiplayer games over the internet and never looked back. Plus that Rage Pro acceleration with 8 MB of VRAM going right into my veins. Threewave CTF, Team Fortress, Killer Quake, the good stuff. Trying to find Quake servers on a Mac was next to impossible so we used chat clients at the time like Hotline (before QuakeFinder was released) and I am still internet-friends with some of the people I met through that era.

Currently trying to unlock the commemorative Classic Ranger skin in Quake Champions as we speak lol.

I got it pretty quickly, you can do it! Stoked for the next update is it includes the Q1 grenade launcher and railgun that was in the expansion. They're even doing Dark Zone/Q1DM6, haha. SO GOOD.

Oh that's pretty neat actually! Just checked out some footage of the QC version and yup, it definitely looks the part lol.

Hope we're getting a proper duel or big map before they pull the plug though. Exile is cool (get it) but not a fan of how samey it looks.

Been playing Darkplaces Quake with the uhd texture pack for the past fortnight. Iconic game, the only shooter that deserves to go toe to toe with Doom.

Yeah, agreed. The ones they've included in QC almost look phoned in. I mean, it makes sense with Dark Zone because it all still resembles Q1. I just honestly have no idea how QC hasn't had more Q1/2/3 maps, feels like a huge missed opportunity.

Guys,
I've bought Quake 1 on Steam
Is there a mod for Q1 where i can aim up and down with a mouse, not only left and right.

When this came out Deathmatch got cranked up to 11. It was the fastest FPS anyone had ever seen. You moved like lightning. You rocket jumped like thunder. Didn't know how to use a mouse with the reflexes of a 13 year old? Tough shit. You were already dead.

I just finished playing through the first two with source ports, and oh boy - Quake still absolutely holds it own with modern shooters. It doesn't feel 25 years old at all. Its atmosphere is really quite unique - even today. The mix of speed, gore, horror, and tension, really created something special, and I'm sad that that style was never really re-visited.

DOOM may be more iconic, but Quake's legacy is undeniable. Legendary title, glad to see its still so loved.

Hard to believe. Not sure the last time I played it but it was probably 20 years ago. Glad to hear it still holds up. Why didn't Bethesda get a remake ready for this anniversary?

I remember playing this for hours and hours on a early multiplayer service called mplayer. When I got into proper quakeworld with CTF, team fortress, and a whole host of mods , multiplayer AI bots, and custom maps, that's when I truly got into FPS's.

And the modding/mapping community is alive and kicking still, putting out some great new content. This is what Quake can look like in the hands of a skilled mapper:

For me, nothing has topped the smoothness and freedom of movement of the Quake engine. Still an absolute bliss to go back to.
