Quest 64 is nowhere near as bad as people say

Anybody played that pseudo-sequel or something on the GBC? Brian's Journey was it?
I own it. It's not a sequel, it's a remake. It's actually a very fun game! The story and characters have been drastically improved, and it feels like a legit action-RPG. Still haven't beat it yet. I may go back to it some day.

Quest 64 was the first and worst RPG I ever played. There are no redeeming qualities with it. At all.

You need to play more RPGs then, there are FAR worse ones out there.

I didn't like Quest 64, but at the same time, I found aspects of it that I enjoyed. The music for one, and the world map was huge.

The problem isn't that Quest 64 was particularly awful, the problem was that it was essentially the only RPG on the 64. (Aidyn Chronicles also sucked, Paper Mario came out right at the end of the system's lifespan)

Imagine if the PS2 only had Okage: Shadow King in the way of RPGs.

Man, I liked Okage >:(

I remember liking this game a lot when I was younger. I really doubt that would hold true today, though, so I'm just going to leave it in my memories where it's still a good game.

If I hated Quest 64 with a passion, why would I go out looking for even worse ones?

Because there's worse RPGs out there and it's a shame to call an average/good one the worst one you've played.

This is like when I thought Chrono Cross was the worst RPG I played, then I played some true shit on a stick.

Hi guys :D

Quest 64 had a nice battle system, and amazing music

everything else sucked. ESPECIALLY the dungeon designs, which used the archaic maze-designs from NES RPGs, except they were a lot longer.

I didn't realize until much later, but the towns of Larapool and Dondoron share the same melody, just arranged differently.

No, regardless of whether it is truely "the worst", Quest 64 was still an awful game.

It was a bit generic but it was acceptable. 4 or 5 out of 10 material, not 1 or 2 out of 10 as most people seemed to think.

People always forget Hybrid Heaven.

So did Konami when it came time to market the game.

Quest 64 is a pretty average RPG of the early 3D style. It has some good ideas with the battle system, and the environments look nice as I recall. It's limited by the one-man party, boring dungeons, and uneventful story. As others have noted, it wouldn't be so maligned (or memorable) if the N64 had more RPGs to diffuse the criticism and expectations across a larger number of titles.

Don't stop there. The entire N64 library is shit on way more than it deserves.

Fucking love the '64.

What are you talking about? I remember when you couldn't even FIND a Nintendo 64 anywhere. And if you did, good luck getting GoldenEye or Mario 64 for it...

Having said that, Quest 64 was crap. Really, it was. There's folks who like it, sure. It was still crap. People will enjoy crap games. I enjoyed Draconus: Cult of the Wyrm for the Dreamcast - it was still crap.

Quest 64 is as bad as people say. God forbid you've never played it before, and tried playing it for the first time now. Its not (THE SUPERHERO GAME THAT SHALL NOT BE NAMED), but that doesn't make it good.

Hybrid Heaven was all about seeing man ass in a Nintendo console game.

I still haven't beaten that game.

I sometimes wake up crying that I played Quest 64 for any length of time.

Haha, I remember this game. It's become a joke between my siblings and I. We just call the character "Quest 64" (what's his real name? Brian? Not like it mattered anyway).

I think that although some things were fun/unique like the battle perimeter and the directionality of the spells or something, the whole game was basically nothing but colourful caves, colourful fields, and uhm.. I remember a rather large colourful town. And when I say that's all it was, I mean it!

I think the biggest shame was despite its colours, it basically had NOTHING in it! It was a barebones RPG with some enemies and a storyline I can hardly remember. Those caves were long, linear, and empty! Every house in that one large town had no people in it and nothing to discover (basically just copy-paste houses.. why did I feel compelled to look in every one of them!). This game was so incomplete and lacking. It was just sad.

Aidyn Chronicles was also hilariously bad (with really, really bad music, especially without the expansion pak! Try it! It's really funny!). It was also very opposite to Quest 64 in that it was a lot more complex, wordy, and difficult.

Those were sure desperate times for the N64.. But the memories of those games will last forever..

To magic, everyone...
TO MAGIC!

I played it the whole way through a long while back. It doesn't come to close to being the worst game I ever played, but it still had a long way to go to be considered good. As someone mentioned earlier the last level of the game before the final battle had a weird creepiness to it that I remember really appealed to me. The battle system was "ok". The graphics were less than par and the story was not that great. But then again, there are plenty of other games I've played that I quit because of just being down right awful and I did finish Quest 64.

Brian is a good kid.

Sigh.

I played Q64 back when it came out. I was one of those many N64 owners that blindly lept to the N-side, thinking that Nintendo was going to give us RPGs.

Quest 64 was by no means the worst, but coming from a guy that really likes Two Worlds and Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest....Q64 is one of the most mundane jokes of an RPG ever made.

1 character.
Stupid leveling system.
Most linear RPG in history.

It's kind of fun in a bad way. I can't exactly explain it.
But I ended up really enjoying Phantasy Star 3 because it was so fucked up and broken. Mega Man Command Mission would be considered mentally handicapped if it was a real person, but it would be adorable to watch.
I really should get a 64 and Quest 64. The only thing holding me back is the lack of other RPGs on the system.

Kinda like a movie that is so awful its good? Hmm, but that sounds like something that would cost me money...

Some great compositions, mixed with a horrible sound driver. Game had much more potential, but they slaughtered it. Originally, you could play three or four characters (among it the final version's main protagonist, a sorceress and a pirate) with unique abilities.

It's not a path of life meant for all of us, this is true.

I am sure there are many worse RPGs out there. But just because there are some worse ones doesn't automatically make it good.

With so many far better RPGs out there I can't see why anyone would waste their time on this game now. It is not a forgotten classic. It's a game that would have been ignored on any other system but got a lot of attention because it was the only N64 RPG at the time.

If it was the first RPG I ever played I might enjoy it (or decide RPGs were not for me) but I would never recommend it to anyone when such better games came out before Quest 64, During Quest 64 and after Quest 64. The only person I could possibly advise to play the game would be someone with only an N64, even then I don't know if I could recommend it I would loan them a SNES.

Alone in the Dark is not the worst movie ever made. Doesn't mean it was any good.

This topic is to declare that Quest 64 is not as BAD as people say and yet no one seems to understand that simple concept. Incredible
not really

I loved how there were no level ups and stat progression was based off certian things.

For example once I figured out that your agility/movement stat was affected by how much you walked around towns I exploited it. Before I went to bed I would wedge a Nerf dart in the side of the control stick to make the hero walk in circles all night. Wake up and the stat is maxed out.

You don't think its that bad of a game, that is the point of your topic. I totally understand your belief. I just disagree with it. I think it IS as bad as some people say it is. And that is MY belief.

There is nothing wrong with you loving a game I dislike. But I think at this point there is very little that can be said to change my opinion of it.

I haven't played Quest 64 or Hybrid Heaven. I don't know if I want to play Quest (looks boring... though the fact that I've heard its battles being compared to Aidyn Chronicles' is a good thing, the rest of the game doesn't sound too fun really), but I am interested in trying Hybrid Heaven, for sure. I just haven't seen a copy...

Hey, I loved Aidyn Chronicles! I've said it before, but it's a very good game... very, very buggy, incomplete, and flawed, but if you can look past that, it's amazing. The scope and scale of the game are immense for a game of its generation...

Shiren 2?

LoL >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Quest64

I think Quest64 was hyped to the heavens too before it came out a la the original Fable. :lol But I could be wrong.

It may not be the worst RPG ever, but it is the worst I have played. Worse than Legend of Dragoon, Koudelka, and Unlimited SaGa.

Wow, I couldn't stand LoD or Koudelka and found them to be trying too hard to be "innovative" and what not. At least Quest 64 knew what it was doing.

I purchased this game instead of Gecko 64. My memory? Running around a city with an horrible layout and camera, and battling some monsters in this forest. Then I turned it off. First game I ever quit from beating.

*shivers*

You know what people are probably going flame me for this but I'm saying it. If it wasn't for this game I probably wouldn't be into RPGs as I am today. It set up the basics for me so to say and I enjoyed every freaking moment of it. The hate of powerful bosses, the frustration of minor enemies never stopping to get in your way. Oh and last but not least, forgoing all that "strategy" and simply buffing yourself and whacking a foe up close and personal :lol Man is this on the Wii VC yet?

Listen to him, everyone, he's a scholar.

Thank you for saying what needed to be said!!

Also - No, but if I write enough petitions Nintendo might get annoyed enough.
