R* bows to GAF pressure: New GTA 5 Screenshots

I still have a suspicion that this is a next-gen launch title.

I'm gonna go with high end PC shots.

I dont think it's a next gen launch title because I don't think R* has launched a big title until the install base gets bigger. That's their pattern and I don't see it changing, especially for their flagship franchise.

Not me. RDR was a much different environment than GTA IV's Liberty City was. It wasn't a big deal running to a hot dog vendor, burger joint or safehouse to get some health.

It's not about the abundance of health item stores, it's the mechanic, period. I just found it extremely tedious having to constantly call the gun van for vests, or visit food vendors/stores out of fear that Euphoria will decide to make me flop one extra time and kill me, or that a car going JUST fast enough to bump me will take my last sliver of health, or I'd be thrown out of the front window randomly during a chase as Niko struggled to get up and police poured shots into me taking health I wouldn't get back. I think regenerative health would make the game way more fun and spontaneous. More "Ohh I'm gonna go do THIS now" and less "Well let me stock up on on health then maybe I'll still feel like doing that."

Precisely, these screens are looking pretty close to that look. There is a bit of softness in these screens.

Which is also present on the 360, just at a higher resolution. Whatever blur or softness you see definitely can't be compared with the soft smudge on the PS3 version.

EDIT: As mentioned below, most likely the awful FXAA as well.

I think I would prefer the stock up with plenty of options to double or triple your health. Give me body armor, knee pads, a yummy lunch, and some crazy pills to make me a tank. I'm probably considered one of those hard core nuts but I would rather have to take the protagonist to the hospital if he flies out a car window and slams his head into a brick wall. I've found myself enjoying every little addition that makes the game more like real life.

Maybe it's the direction everyone feared, but GTA is now the realistic open world car jacking game where Saints Row, Just Cause, and the likes are the 'zany' ones. I think those other games do the zaniness better anyways while the physics and driving in GTA4 where an awesome addition.

Now they need to work on a more flexible story with a relatable and likable protagonist.

If they're listening to people, that gives me a slight bit of hope that they'll implement a modern, enjoyable control scheme this time around. GTA4 feels like a dinosaur in comparison to other open world games from this gen.

Maybe if they allowed health item hoarding like you're suggesting I'd be more accepting of it, but the health system in GTAIV was just annoying to me. And, again, it's not about being "zany," it's about wanting to explore and maybe jump off a few 5 foot ledges without fear of dying.

The only question I want answered is when the PC version is going to come out.

If it's more than a month gap between PC and console I might die.

Then they need to retool the damage system. I don't think having the rag doll physics being involved with the damage calculation was a good idea. It leads to some wonky results where you hit your head on the ground/wall by a pixel and take massive damage. Maybe they should also offer some in-inventory portable health kits?

It's the FXAA, it was rather low quality in Max Payne 3.
Well, I figured that'd be a potential culprit, If they cant offer a better solution, I'd rather a more aliased but sharper looking game, at least give us the option.

Hopefully it will be 720p, the screenshot is in 720p
Well, screens can be scaled, so there's no telling that it is native 720p because the screen is at that resolution. If however, it's Fxaa at play and it's native 720p, it's an improvement I guess barring unknown factors like framerate, but why not MLAA or 2x MSAA if fxaa blurs the screen so much.

EDIT: I guess, I'll have to see more screens, but this looks much softer than what fxaa would do on it's own.

I'm surprised they even released these. Doesn't every R* game goes through a news drought?
Seems like it, but GTA V's seems really pronounced for some reason. I don't know if they've ever gone like 8 months with literally nothing after a trailer.

The anticipation is probably getting a bit heavy. Anything they post on their website, YouTube, Twitter, etc. gets drowned out by comments and replies from people discussing and asking about more GTA V info. With these, they're able to not actually reveal anything new about the game, yet they'll maybe quiet down some of the fans. Kinda doubtful, though, to be honest. Like Kaizer said, all these are doing is making me more anxious to get some actual new details on the game and another trailer.

Maybe they completely retooled the game following the leaks? Or other games just took up a lot of resources and they haven't been able to concentrate much on this.

It's inevitable. GTA is a huge and popular franchise. No matter what they say or release regarding the game it's going to get people anxious and excited. Exactly how I felt when I saw the trailer. Especially if you're a fan of the series.

I don't think there's anything unusually wrong with this game relative to all of Rockstar's other productions.

I mean if the game is a complete trainwreck right now that would still be about right.

Bahahaha so true. The game was "only" announced under a year ago. C'mon guys, it's Rockstar, they're doing fine.

I really think they could manage the process better if they wanted to.

1) Don't announce your upcoming game until you can nail down a release date and carve it in stone. If you can't do that yet, then it's too early to announce the game.

2) When you do announce the game, announce the release date too. Let the world know how long they have to wait.

3) After you've announced the game, give the fans something to chew on at least every couple of months while they wait.

Anything unreasonable in there? Plenty of studios do it that way. If your marketing strategy is based on keeping fans in a perpetual state of anxiety to the point of agitation, well, then, maybe your strategy is kind of asshole-ish. Is the secret to R*'s success really that they tease their fans like some dick holding a piece of meat out of a dog's reach until it snaps and goes ballistic? I like to think it's because their games kick ass. But these last eight months have really sucked.

I agree with that. But R* doesn't start doing that until we're at least within a year of release. At least that's how it feels. But I think this 8 month gap is the most they've ever left us in the dark. I thought the way they announced the game was awesome, random, site completely redirected to the logo, but they should have been prepared to release more information at some point and not say "you won't see anymore GTA V information until after Max Payne 3 is relased" (I'm pretty sure I heard that somewhere).

On a side note, in this GTA. I want customizable weapons. We already see rifles with silencers in the trailer as they're coming out of the van but that could just be cut scene related.

The shadows on the two folks sitting by the water though do not seem as good as what we've seen in the trailer:

Look how the girl here has various light sources lighting her model.
It's probably just an impression, but it seems toned down,

This is actually very interesting. Looking at her right side, unless that's part of the model, it looks like there is a ton of ambient occlusion going on.

Maybe still image vs. in motion? Actual WIP shot vs. polished trailer?

Quoted for truth.

The health mechanics in GTAIV are fucking horrendous, V definitely needs regenerating health.

Could be but why would you release, after 8 months, such a wip screenshots? Shouldn't graphics have gotten better? If anything, a single screenshot should be more easy to tweak and made to look intereesting.

I'm not going to get into a big debate and argument over every single word. We're trying to get Rockstar to add content and gameplay back in, not make the problem worse with a sit and stare into space button.

If they can make the game world as atmospheric as RDR's, then sitting down would allow you to admire the detail and see how everything is proportionate. GTAIV has countless details that you're likely to not notice at all; anything that would help alleviate that would improve it all.

Bully felt really immersive. The world conjures up feelings when I was a kid.

Same with San Andreas. The rural/forest areas reminded me of when I was young, and my family driving up north to live in another state.

R* is really good with real-life settings/depictions in their graphics. I do want to see them try venture out of their comfort zone for another game though.

I really hope the PC version isn't shit. Max Payne 3 gives me hope on that one at least.

And that the game isn't a snoozefest like GTAIV was.

I'll even settle for a semi-optimized PC version. I encourage them to go the Max Payne route though, 100GB+ or bust! ;p

I'm impressed (not, this isn't dance nerds, dance), now let me steal planes, and helicopters so I parachute out of the and do a dive bomb.
Don't forget to add an urban myth into the game, i.e. Bigfoot, Godzilla, Yeti, urban serial killer with a hook, BATMAN.

There should me snowy mountains with occasional blizzards.

Where is the video footage?

Should be good, if there's footage...

Rockstar shows a screen-shot, NERDS DANCE!!

Bigger than GTA San Andreas? I thought this was only based on one city. I guess they expanded it. But yeah, Biggest? DAMN!
I'll believe it when I see it, lol.

Hopefully they add some activities to do outside regular missions; do not mean bowling, darts, or watching television.
