R-TYPE DX: Music Encore is a shoot 'em up video game developed and published by City Connection.

About

"What if every stage had its own dedicated background music, just like in the arcade?"—That "what if" has finally become reality. Fight your way through from the First Bydo Mission to the Second Bydo Mission in the ultimate cross-series mission, "Ultimate Challenge", and relive that once-imaginary scenario with brand-new sound!

"Ultimate Challenge" features the very first full soundtrack implementation. Even in places where the original reused common tracks, brand-new stage-specific music faithful to the arcade has been added. Each stage can now be played with the same music structure as the arcade version.

The music is composed by WASi303, a composer well-versed in retro game sound. Making full use of actual handheld hardware sound chips, it delivers an authentic resonance true to the era, while still offering a fresh new experience!

I don't get it.

What's special about every stage having its own dedicated background music? When wasn't that the case? And why is it a selling point?

What am i missing?

My guess is that since the original game is on a handheld system it didn't have a full soundtrack but maybe some simplified loops of the arcade original soundtrack.

That's right. The original game was on Game Boy Color, and some songs were missing.
There's something very endearing about a release like this. It is a niche genre with a handheld system port which is a niche within the shoot em up genre.

But then it is a remix or a bit of a remaster on the audio side at least.

I don't know. I find it interesting and I will buy it at the right price.

Such a rare release. It is made for a very specific market and audience I think. Kinda sweet for the fans.
