What about the term "honky"

Do white people sound car horns when we talk?
funny story

a white friend of mine had honkie as his ingame name for MGO, and we were in japan for a tournament

everytime his name was brought up everyone just went silent for like 2 seconds. the announcers at tgs said it no problem though

ONKIE-SAN ^__^

holy crap that Wikipedia list is looooooong

Edit: I mean, seriously, the British have a specific racial slur for the Argentinians?

Not a slur but in case any of you wonder why whites are called gringos by Mexicans it's because in the Mexican-American War the Americans had green uniforms and their commanders would scream at them 'green go! green go!' on attacks.

Edit: According to Wiki this is apocryphal since Americans didn't wear green uniforms until the 20th century.

My friend works for a construction company called "Gringo Construction".

I always thought it was borderline racist.

Wiki has an interesting take on it. Seems to have to do with Black/Hungarian issues in meat plants in Chicago from years back.

Looking up Cracker now. I love that term.

Instead of calling them wetbacks my uncle would call them gators, he said when the swam across the river all you could see were their eyes just like gators. Yea even Hispanics make fun of other Hispanics.
gator would be the most badass racial slur you could be called though.

Other racial slurs that I don't get:

Jujube
Spinning Lindy
Zoetrope
Munich Spoon
Redshirt
Bedazzler
Omega Supreme
Tex Hex
Zork
Ballyho
Leather Goddess

Not to be offensive, but wasn't the creation of clowns attributed to Irish immigrants? I read that somewhere and was confused, didn't seem right at all.

rofl anyone remember that hall of racial slurs they had at the intolerance museum. Our teachers would even warn us not to laugh. There was even an episode about it on South Park.

Gotta say, the oddest term is "Chinaman" in reference to, well, a Chinese man. Apparently it used to not be derogatory, but I'm guessing over time in the past people used it in a derogatory way.

I think it's clever. When crackers are baked they have several white and peachy colors that resemble white people's skins.

No, that one makes sense. As a white man, I think I authoritatively speak for all white men when I say that saltines are fucking delicious.

I thought they were called wetbacks because of their filthy hair dripping slop all down their backs.

:lol

I can't tell if you're going for a 'being so ignorant that it's hilarious' move or you're....

Do any white people here get offended by white person insults? I can't. I guess there's no history of us being screwed over really so it's hard to do anything except smile if I get called a cracker or a honky.

yes, but what if they are Ritz crackers! What about that! Maybe hispanic or lightly tanned people should be called Ritz! heh. ok yeah crackers I guess makes sense. Still strange to me though.

Gamecrazy use to have tournaments and you had to make profiles for some games. Always used Saltine Cracker as mine. I originally wanted it as my XBL name, but decided against it. kinda one of those things you thought were silly when your young.

I still to this date don't understand many of the ones about Mexicans in general.

Derogatory term for Americans that used to be common in Australia was "seppo".

Derived from the cockney rhyming slang for Yank - "septic tank".

Yeah, it just makes me laugh.
I often address my white friends with "How is it going, my Caucasian?"
That's probably a terrible thing to do, though.

Ahh, that explains the name for the NY Yankees.

personally i think it is retarded that "chinaman" is considered a racial slur.

Dutchman, Englashman, Frenchman- fine.... Chinaman, RACIST!

all because at one point in time a legitimate term was used in a disparaging tone towards someone with non-white skin. Im sure "Englishman" wasn't used with love during the Revolution, but now it is perfectly acceptable.

Yeah. I've been to the museum of tolerance.

Pfft. Get a tan like me and be in the exclusive cracker club.

:D

No tanning here. Mom's side of the family is red-headed Irish, while Dad's is Scandinavian. I don't even think I could get a tan if I did the spray on shit. :p

Besides, it's common knowledge that saltines are the kings of crackers.

The Brits and the Argentines are still mutually butt hurt over the Falklands. The Argentine people have a crazy amount of national pride, so if you have any sort of international tension with them, they'll decide not to forget very easily.

from wiki

Cheese-eating surrender monkey

I dunno. To me, I think the use of Chinaman as derogatory is more recent due to Asian immigrants in the 1800s. They don't necessarily have to be Chinese to be called that too.

The meaning behind racial slurs can be pretty bad if you do the research.. There are some Asian ones that I know that are downright mean if you knew the context.

You should have done an image search.

Bah! If Bush didn't need to exercise due diligence before invading Iraq, I don't need to exercise due diligence before posting on the interwebs!

I'm terribly ashamed and embarrassed. I'll probably not post for weeks now...

What about "moon crickets"? A friend of mine told me the answer, but I'd rather not say it in case it was the wrong answer.

I got the answer from the Urban Dictionary so don't shoot the messenger:
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=moon+crickets

"Black people that come out at night to raise hell and make alot of noise, like crickets after you turn off the lights to go to sleep thats when they come out."

^ Damnit, beat me too it. I had this conversation with my friend who is one and he told me what it was, we were both like wtf :lol

I am pretty sure "gook" comes from Korea/Korean yet it gets used for Vietnamese people. Insensitive AND racist, all in the same slur!

I've wondered what it actually means though. Same with "slope"..... do they like living on large slope hills or something?

There's an interesting read about that one here.

Yeah, I don't like racial slurs either, they're too hateful if you understand the meaning. Sticks and stones though.

What the fuck is that? :lol

Check Urban Dictionary!

What would we do without it? :|

EDIT: beaten

Yeah, I'm always slightly offended when someone reduces me to a racial slur, especially since I can't complain about because my genetic ancestors had it easier. It's the intent that matters, and the idea that there's not some cultural taboo surrounding a slur doesn't change that.

But I just let it go. Some ignorant asshole was being ignorant. Why let it affect you?

what about "kike"? I hadn't even heard that until recently and I'd like to know how it ranks on the offensiveness scale. What does it even mean? I heard it refers to Jewish people somehow.
