Raiden Revealed for Mortal Kombat X

MK1 was really the only time Raiden seemed like a badass, and even kind of a scary character. Boon's turned him into a wuss.

It would be a nice touch if you win with an x-ray it results in a fatality. They're more gruesome than most fatalities up until mk9

Kotal Kahn sounds, fights, and looks like he would make a great MK boss.

Hyped for the big bad of this MK when he didn't make the cut.

I'm not trying to be a dick, but I don't really understand how anyone could think of Metal Gear Raiden being associated with Mortal Kombat.....when a main character in MK is already named Raiden.

EDIT: Ah ok so it's not just me, lol.

I want to see Raiden in his beggar clothes with the all white robe underneath, that ripped greyish beige cloak from the movie.
I hadn't seen Scorpion's Fatality until now. That ones just .... silly too.

Bleh.
Expected a CG reveal like they did with Scorpion vs Subzero. That shit got me pumped way more than actual gameplay, which is very weird and a definite first.

I know right?

Kids these days..
Dude, I already knew about the lightning god fighter in Mortal Kombat (the only difference is I pronounce their names differently to avoid confusion). It's just that "Jack the Ripper" Raiden came to my mind first, that's all.

NO YOU CANT DO THAT

Raiden is LIGHTNING, the RAIN Transformed!

I didn't notice at first, but Raiden has a really big character model.
He is almost the same size as Kotal in that video, and that dude is like a head above everyone else.

I think I read somewhere that in the MK lore he's supposed to be around 7 feet tall and very imposing.

Kotal Kahn looks bad ass. Looks like Orge from Tekken but I thought he was a really cool boss too.

I think going for an all-new set of fighters bar a few of the mainstays could be a stroke of genius, much like how they did with SF3.

True, Kotal Kahn looks HUGE, like 6'5-7'0 ft on the character selection screen in this E3 demo with Ed Boon:

EDIT: Ok maybe not that big, I've just watched it again when he stands opposite Scorpion. Maybe 6'5!

I quite like the throw ender in da trap gawd Storm Lord variation. The shock at the end of it that propels Kotal across the ground is satisfying to look at.

I'm really not liking the "Injustice" gimmick influence we're seeing with background interactivity.
Otherwise, it looks pretty good so far.
Definitely keeping an eye on this and hoping it comes to PC day and date with the PS4/XBone release.

I don't know why my brain instantly thought Metal Gear Solid Raiden as a guest character when I read the thread. Like obviously you make the MK Raiden connection, but maybe I just took him as a given.

MGS Raiden would fit in well, i'd think. Over designed ultra violent cyborg ninja, sounds like a MK character to me.

I love what they're doing with these X Rays though. Some really brutal ones shown off already.

Not at all, I'm being legitimately befuddled by people's willingness to accept one thing over the other based purely on the way a move is presented.

"Why is A acceptable but B isn't?"

"Because of the tone and the way it's presented"

"But it's still really brutal and would kill"

"But the way it's presented makes you not take the things on screen seriously so you don't think they're gonna be killed/hurt by these things"

I don't understand the line of thinking. Maybe I'm misinterpreting your point but this is what I gather from it and it baffles me.

Not to speak for anyone else, but for me personally, the x-ray moves seem a bit out of place because it's in such contrast to how that level of violence is usually presented in these games.

Usually when that level of graphic detail is shown in an MK it results in the death of the character. You could say that other games do have moves which are also violent enough to kill people and you'd be absolutely right, however it's the presentation that causes this sort of contrast to me.

For example in Marvel Deadpool has a move where he whips out guns and fires a ton of shots while yelling bang over and over. In real life this would clearly kill a person but it's presented in a cartoon way where a bullet has about as much force as any other hit.

If each bullet was presented the same way as say the bullet in Shang Tsung's Clown fatality and then the other guy got up like nothing happened it would cause a similar sort of out of place contrast.

It's an artstyle issue similar to the Arkham series. It's unavoidable when you combined gritty/quasi-realistic artstyles with cartoon violence.
