Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

Graphics and hardware matter more than "magical artistic geniuses who perform miracles."

Otherwise, we'd still be stuck in the 32-bit era, dealing with pixels and basic 3D, and devs would be forbidden from aiming for "impossible" experiences.

Hardware power comes first, art comes second.
Super disagree on this one. Power matters, but art can make weak hardware hit way above its weight. Power gives devs more options, but there are plenty of examples where art style matters much more then the console or PC that it's on.

Halo is mediocre and has always been. Quake 3 and UT tournament were better multiplayer games at the time of halo1 (but many didn't have pcs to play)

1080p is enough. 4k was too soon, takes too much power. Should of been 1440p on this gens consoles. Performance mode 1080p, and a higher red 1440p, upscaled to 4k optional.
-lower resolution means more effects and higher graphical quality and less memory and storage needed to achieve.

$2k 4090 is a rip off and way too expensive. High end Gpus for gaming should top out at $800 for ultra/xx90 cards. XX80 cards should max 500 to 600 (taking inflation into account) as 8800 gtx and 1080gtx were both in that range. No one would of accepted the high prices in late 90s 3dfx era or the earlt 00s.
I disagree on the Halo part but agree on the 2nd point, and very much agree on the last point.

Halo was game changing back in the day, and I was also playing stuff like Quake and UT back in the day. It was a console FPS that took what games like Goldeneye did and made it actually work. That combined with great lore, interesting worlds, fun enemies with variety, and later on addicting multiplayer all make an amazing series. Halo isn't perfect by any means (CE is good but not great, Halo 2 was gutted story wise with an entire 3rd act being cut for example) and really anything not made by Bungie is pretty shit but it's a great series overall.

While I understand why we went from 1080 to 2160 with it being a clean 4x increase I think the focus on 4K has been detrimental as even with the current consoles and GPUs 4K still isn't 100% doable and especially wasn't when Sony/Microsoft released the One X and PS4 Pro. Unfortunately it's a two sided thing where consoles help TV technology develop, and TV development changes console development for better or worse. 1440p is a great sweet spot and still looks great on a big TV.

The last point is why I've started to care less and less about PC gaming and PC hardware the last few years. I fully understand the economic decisions, and how inflation works but anybody that thinks Nvidia isn't taking advantage of people is in denial.

Kojima is a phenomenal director with some of the most interesting visuals, storytelling, and characters in the industry... but the gameplay is usually subpar, unintuitive, and lacking when compared to other games.
I partially disagree. I think MGS 1-5 are all great in the gameplay department as well as visuals, storytelling, and characters. I've never finished Policenauts or Snatcher (played both roughly half way through and fell off), but I found Death Stranding so boring to play and the rest of the game not nearly good enough to push through it.

MGS1's gameplay was great back in 98, MGS3 felt amazing to play (especially Subsistence), and 5 is possibly the best stealth sandbox game of all time.

Stop worrying and obsessing over DLSS and PSS and RT and whatever other nonsense initials stand for shadows and smoke and reflections and other meaningless graphical excess. Video games already look great and while there is nothing wrong with liking great graphics, the point of video games has been long since lost to corporate greed and social agenda pandering. Games should perform smoothly and make you smile while you play them. The rest is noise aimed at technophiles and videophiles in order to get you to spend $2000 on a graphics card that you don't need.

people don't like gaming that much.

think of how many games are bought that aren't played and think of how much isn't played of the games that are played.

Ray tracing fucked the whole industry. I never use it. its a fucking FPS destroyer and doesn't do shit for our current games.. just makes for good marketing and we're chasing the wrong trends. It's the hardware version of live service games.

As a person who has played on PC for 20 years, and continues to play on it pc gaming overall is home to some of the worst real life aesthetics of all time. Most of the PC gaming setups I see look like they belong to a 8 year old or one of those 16 year olds with Gucci bedsheets that think it makes me look cool simply because it's expensive.

Your RGB looks fucking stupid, your 49" 31:9 monitors look retarded, your chairs are a travesty, and your try hard peripherals are hilarious in a bad way as the vast majority of you aren't good enough at games to make playing with a $5 keyboard or a $400 keyboard with lubed switches any different.

I would be embarrassed to bring people over to my place if it looked like 90% of the setups here.

Fight me.

Sony and Microsoft are both responsible for the disastrous launch of Cyberpunk 2077 has they both ran compliance checks on their platforms and gave approval despite knowing exactly how broken the game was.

Mass Effect is bad and BioWare only ever made two good games (KOTOR and DA:O).
Remedy's not made a game worth playing since the first Max Payne.
Awwww.... Mass Effect 2 might be one of the best games I've ever played in my life. In fact, it probably is along with Symphony of the Night.

Not all that controversial but definitely cynical,

On a long enough timeline all studios will chase their talent out the door in favor of what their publishers want and increased monetization. Slop is inevitable.

This is why you follow talent and not the studios. You next 'top 20 game of all time' is currently being developed now and by a new dev team with talent either new to the industry or chased out of the corporate studios by their own practices.

And remember, this is a business transaction. The studio is literally only as good as the game they are currently putting out now. History is meaningless due to staff turnover and changing of leadership. The studio is just a name and not the same people that hits you in the nostalgia. The chances it will do your favorite IP justice aren;t great cause the minds behind aren't there and generally don't pass down their institutional knowledge and insight.

I'd be fine with games staying at PS4 levels of graphics if it meant games took less time to make and could afford to take more creative risks

PS1/2/3 controller form factor was best

Ghost of Tsushima was a 7

4:3 CRT with wired controllers is how games are supposed to feel. Everything else feels sluggish.

Kamiya is the greatest director on the merit of making games that embrace the uniqueness of the medium, not wannabe movies.

Anything more than stereo with a subwoofer is a waste of space. Surround is beyond distracting, not immersive.

Yeah the same goes for 500 hundred pages books, but they do anyway.
Vg are different than books, you create your own pacing or even how much content\interactions\lore you get from a game depend on how much you explore etc.

They are a more fluid, less strict experience compared to a book, for lack of better words.

You are always gonna let down the hardcore for not including that detail or that character interaction etc.

Not saying it's impossible, just harder.

Microsoft hates Moon studios because they wouldn't play ball and came for them.

IMHO

Phil was in favor back then so it worked out better than it should.

Moon studios is a very talented studio and No Rest For The Wicked will be a banger.

Games should be easy, not difficult. They are an entertainment product. A recreational activity. Meant to be relaxing and fun. The fuck is the point of difficult games where you have to memorize 200 different attack patterns and moves and have 0.001 miliseconds reaction time and perfect hand-eye co-ordination ? That is not fun, that is stressful. That is a chore. That is work, not play. And no, there is no "sense of pride and accomplishment" associated with mastering it. Just a giant waste of time. Fuck that shit. My life is difficult enough as it is. For my games, i want easy mode, all the way.

I'll second this but with caveats. The dark souls games are fine the way they are and fun because you know going into it what to expect. Also unlike fighting games there is no insane combos to pull off. Plus there is always cheese strategies, over powered weapons and such and leveling up to get you by.

What I don't like is fighting games that have combos and hell even basic attacks that you have to input a series of left stick or dpad movements and if it's not done in the fight split second frame at the right time it doesn't pull off. Street fighter has a bunch of these and they suck. Its one of the reasons why I prefer mortal kombat and soul caliber, or hell even tekken. You can still those games and beat the single player without too much issues. Street fighter and fighters like it requires memorization and precise iframe knowledge. Nothing worse than being stuck on a boss fight for days making the game feel like a chore.

I will also say, having difficulty options is not a bad thing. For single player games just include it. Cut down hit points or, more lives, increase player damage dealt, less enemies etc... There are so many easy things to implement a easy mode (or hard mode) could do.
Maybe for something like dark souls you can leave it out or make it so easy mode is single player only.

All sounds like strictly personal preference stuff to me. Overly easy games bore the living fuck out of me.

I've played hard as nails games as much as I could for 30 years. Lately I just do not have the energy to keep that up. My job is hard enough.

BUT, I still don't want a piss easy game. I wouldn't even play video games if they were like that.

Gimme the goldilocks "just right".

Somewhere between Kazahn and Animal Crossing.

Older games weren't necessarily better and newer games aren't necessarily as bad.
On that note, the way many games were launched back then would be considered "broken" or "unfinished" by today's standards. From abysmal performance to game breaking bugs, or even games that simply couldn't be completed. The whole talk about how releases used to be better is complete bullshit.

Ivalice Alliance > Compilation of Final Fantasy VII

Final Fantasy VII is great and I even really like Dirge of Cerberus but I never really liked the setting for some reasons.

Also, Final Fantasy IX is one of the best but instead of remake, I'd rather have a sequel or side game.

The only upcoming games that I anticipate are ones that the mainstream doesn't anticipate much.... Sinking City 2, Metro 4 and Darksiders 4.

Kojima is a hack. His games are good mostly in spite of him rather than because of him. He'd be much better suited to film, but only directing. Definitely not writing.

RE9 is bland. By trying to appeal to everyone with it's RE4 & RE7 esque types of gameplay it has no definitive identity. The environments were some of the most boring and forgetful of the series.

I think Sonic Spinball is a pretty good game. It's just not a main Sonic game. And that's ok, specially when we had Sonic 3 in the next year.

Chronicles of Riddick: escape from Butcher Bay is better than the movies.

Terms like "moon logic" and "boomer shooters" are overused and denigrate their genres.

Alien parts from Crysis are worse than Far Cry 1 trigens because they leave behind most of things that made the game great, unlike the later. And mechanically they're more bland and repetitive. The hit detection with one specific trigen type in Far Cry is pretty bullshit though.

The critics' were right for once and Crimson Desert is a very long arduous game.

Without much incentive to play beyond it being pretty after 20 or so hours I have completely given up on it and the thought of playing it is exhausting.

The exploration isn't unique or engaging enough to carry on the story is crap as we all know and the game drip feeds you progression behind extremely obtuse and slow actions.

Even the loading screen annoys me, you have to wait for the menu then press play then there's not one but two loading screens.

It's almost as if the game design is let's make this as convoluted or complex to the extreme.

Not only that but I thought I'd b-line the quest to get it over with. Only to find extreme skill checks against bosses (am on the chapter with the fayre in hernand , boss in the box) and I' thought okay I'll go and get some more levels equipment and abilities only each task to get them is an absolute chore to not only find but complete.

Fuck this game.
