Rambi confirmed! New DKC: Tropical Freeze Info

hmmm i count eight levels, but cant find any hidden area...I know they're there dammit but where

There are nine levels in that world, including the secret ones:

I think the K level isn't includeded, though

I know it was the name of a level in DKC2, but calling the next one Donkey Kong Country: Animal Antics would be great, assuming there's a big focus on animal buddies (as Tanabe said he wished they could've done with this one).

I think they can make Squitter work by having him be unplayable. For a stage you have to keep up with him and the platforms he creates. Maybe have a larger spider chase after you or something i dunno

Alternatively (or perhaps additionally), Squitter could specialize in wall-climbing -- something he didn't do in the Rare originals, but here it could allow for vertical platforming where he can run straight up and down walls. Maybe even across ceilings!

I can get behind both these ideas.

They can call it Creature Carnival, the enemy gimmick is Circus performing Kremlings with Ringmaster K.Rool, those damn Kremlings have swipe local wildlife to perform in K.Rool's travelling circus that runs across multiple islands via ship. Various animal Buddies like Clapper and Ellie are captured to perform in said circus and DK is pissed as are the other animal buddies leading to an excuse to bring them all together across different islands pursuing Klown K.Rool's Big Top Boat.
Also includes Hoofer the Wildebeest from Jungle Beat because he's awesome and deserves more love.

I was joking about this but now I kind of like the idea, would be worth it to see the reactions to Klownlings, "retro ruined them forever!" ahee hee hee.

Hmm, I like it. A circus/carnival theme can be spooky, too, just like the pirate theme in DKC2. Heck, DCK2 already did it to a degree with Krazy Kremland. This would be like extrapolating the Krazy Kremland concept to an entire game, which frankly, would be awesome.

So far, it hasn't been, outside of the canyon theme (the one with the barrels and the shantytown down in the gorge) and the theme they played in the recent trailer when the Snowmads arrive at DK Island (a theme that sounded like something straight out of DKC2). Oh, and I really dig the saxophone theme from the recent trailer. And this safari theme is quality stuff, straight out of The Lion King.

But really, it's all just a matter of personal preference. While I prefer the darker, more epic and swashbuckling fare of DKC2, with its haunting atmosphere, this more jubilant music in Tropical Freeze is clearly very well-done. I'm sure it will be an excellent soundtrack, one of the best this year.

I finally got around to listening to every piece of music out from this game so far, and you're definitely right... the DKC 2 music seems much more atmospheric and ambient (combined with its punctuations of upbeat joviality) compared to what we've heard from Tropical Freeze. But I DO love your comparisons of DKC3 to Tropical Freeze, as it seems very apt and wasn't something that connected for me until I read your take on it. The DKC 2 soundtrack will never be touched, but this could easily outclass the music from DKC 3 (which already has some fantastic tunes in it), especially combined with the aesthetic and whimsy of many of the levels shown off so far. Based on what I've heard so far, I have no doubt this will probably be in my top three soundtracks of the year, so the fact that it isn't mimicking the glorious trail blazed by DKC 2 isn't a problem... there's more than enough room in the gaming spectrum for sounds like these.

OH TITS! Check out this part:

"Each capsule unlocks figurines that you can rotate and view in your Extras menu, including the cast of characters and enemies like the commonly-seen "Tuff Tucks" -- tossable penguins with cute little helmets."

I absolutely adore model viewers. Hype increased 100%! I'm not even kidding.

Hell yes. This will be a much better incentive to collect puzzles pieces than the artwork from DKCR. Though the dioramas WERE pretty nice, I hope they incorporate that into the unlockables as well.

On a side note, I still don't see the Kremlings being touched in terms of villainy. I found the Tiki baddies from Returns to be the weakest set of enemies in the entire series, despite having some interesting designs. I love Nordic things so snowy vikings already feels like a huge step up in this game, but I still miss the darker atmosphere and cast of fiends from the first two DKC games.

Hey MetalGuardian, the dioramas are back, too. The recent videos show four categories under Extras -- Figurines, Music, Art and Dioramas. You can see for yourself by watching GameXplain's four-minute overview video.

Also, you use Banana Coins to unlock the figurines. You can only unlock figurines of characters you've encountered so far, so there's no risk of spoiling yourself early. Also, it looks like there are a lot of figurines -- at least 10 characters under "Snowmads 1," which implies there are multiple galleries for the enemies alone (three or four galleries, judging from the figurines menu, with a separate gallery for the Kongs and company).

Confirmed figurines so far are DK, Diddy, Dixie, Cranky, Rambi, Tuck (penguin enemy), Tuff Tuck (helmet penguin), and Fluff (sumo bunny). You can rotate their figurines and zoom in and out with the shoulder buttons.

As for the music, art and dioramas, they are probably unlocked the same way they were in Returns.

I know I'll be spamming Cranky's Kong-Pow to farm coins and get all the figurines!

I have a bit worries about the music and the atmosphere in this game. The old SNES games were known to have some melancholy soundtracks and sometimes a darker atmosphere, where this game seems to be very happy and lighthearted. I loved the old SNES games because they were the opposite of a Mario game. they were much deeper with some background stories to tell, a darker atmosphere and of course melancholy soundtracks which is something totally new in Jump and Run games.

But it seems... this is totally not the case here, it's happy and light hearted just like Mario, no depth and no melancholy like the old SNES classicers. I hope there are many levels which are just like the SNES ones. If not, I won't buy.

There s definitely been several levels shown that feature more somber music, such as sawmill hill, but even then, i don't agree with the idea that light hearted equals lack of depth or meaning. The grasslands song for example is a fantastic arrangement that fits the environment, and tells a story; just one that celebrates the joy and majesty of African wildlife.

Agree with all of that.

There's definitely moody music in Tropical Freeze.

Heard a few instances and also, Aquatic Ambience is back.

Wow who gives a rat's ass about Rambi, the actual news is the video in this gamespot link:

Dat Music

The way the music and the level design work together... how alive it feels... Damn. Retro might just be the new Rare, as was always speculated. I also would like to see some more melancholy tracks and stages with a darker aesthetic--this was perfected in DKC2--but as it stands, it looks like a stellar game already.

I'm listening to covers of Mining Melancholy again right now. Perfection. I bow down to the Wise man.

Can you give me a video of Sawmill Hill where I can listen to the music please?

I know, the music in the African level truly tells a story and its great. But I'd like to hear some sad and darker tunes! I personally heard one of them in the ice levels which was great but I like to hear more.

I love that Rambi is back. He's easily the best and most recognizable animal buddy. It's a shame they couldn't find a way to work in Enguarde but, honestly I like Retro's approach of focusing more on giving the Kongs special abilities more. Diddy, Dixie and Cranky all have abilities underwater, so Enguarde would have been redundant. Expresso would have made no sense either since he allows you to fly higher and the Kongs help you do that in various ways. I think I would have liked Rocket Barrels more if they replaced it with some kind of animal, though.

This game will absolutely be what gets me to pick up the Wii U.

Whoa that cover is amazing. Thanks for sharing.

Wow! I was kinda meh on this. I played dkcr on 3ds and thought it was great but I wasn't really hyped. I was gonna get this day one anyway but after that Savannah level I can't fucking wait. That music man

It's so sad that this thread discussing the game's awesome features is shorter than the thread bitching about 1080p vs 720p.

It's quite telling, I'd say.

Are we walking about the same games here?

It isn't telling us anything we didn't already know. A large portion of gamers primary concern is raw graphical power. I find it sad.

I think Retro was actually much truer to the spirit of Metroid than they are to the spirit of Donkey Kong Country. Tropical Freeze seems to very much be a continuation of their own DKCR rather than RARE's games. RARE's trilogy definitely had an ambiance and atmosphere to it that is not present in Retro's games. It worked well because the gameplay was slower paced (comparatively), and that moody music fit in well. What people have to understand is this approach would not work at all with Retro's mechanics and level design. It's super fast paced, the environments are constantly shifting and moving and everything is very alive. The more mysterious tone of RARE's games would not fit well at all with the kind of gameplay that Retro has created.

I think my favorite cover by those guys is Hot-Head Bop. It sounds just like the original but in much higher quality, it's awesome.

very good...ah if only we knew the total amount of levels, guess we'll find out when first reviews start popping in

I would say the total number of levels will be something between 60-70 (just like DKCR), depending on the possibility of an extra lost world unlocked by K levels (K levels which have been already confirmed).

If every world is like the second one that shows that image, that would make 6 standard levels + 3 hidden levels + 1 unlockable K level = 10 - > 10 x 6 islands = 60.

Good point. DKC:R evolved the DKC gameplay quite a bit. It's faster and there is a lot more going on. The music has to fit such a differnt paced gameplay, so the exact same style of the music of the original trilogy would just not fit.

Anyway, I'm super satisfied with what I've heard so far in :TF - just amazing!

Neitio beat me to it, but yeah, the videos audio isn't very loud, so be sure to listen closely. I really liked what i heard. As for darker, sadder tunes, I would expect a lot of them to pop up in the underwater world. Lots of caves, ruins, etc. Perfect for those soulful jams.

Changing topic, im so stoked for the model viewers. I loved the dioramas in dkcr, but i never felt i could look at them close enough. Crankys kong pow just became a lot more useful!

Yep, the Extras look great. Four categories -- Figurines, Music, Art and Dioramas. Figurines are definitely the ones I'm looking forward to the most, but I definitely like the dioramas, and look forward to the concept art and ability to hear Dave Wise's soundtrack in-game without the sound effects. Lots of incentives here to collect the coins for the figurines and the puzzle pieces, KONG letters, etc, for everything else.

EDIT: Wow, that Frantic Fields level looks amazing.

Yeah, I'm confused by that Nintendo rep's comment, as well. I thought media outlets have been reporting that you can upload your replay data for others to view?

On another note, GameXplain posted a short video of the figurine viewer. Inexplicably, they click on the icon for the second world's boss (Skowl, the sorcerous owl), but then they back out before we can view it. He has a really cool design, so I was interested to see his figurine. Ah well.

It'd be slightly disappointing if we cannot upload videos of our replays.

I was assuming that the Icon behind the red "X" and green check mark was a video camera, indicating whether or not the player chose to upload a video replay. Just in-case you didnt want to reveal to the world how you did so well.

edit: It even says, "Watch Replay".

lol

Yeah, the camera icons on the records screen seems to support the idea we can upload our replay data, if we wish.

EDIT: Oh, ha, it says "Watch Replay." :)

The rep must of been misinformed(or not informed at all).

I would of only been slightly disappointed, but mainly because I was hoping for this to be a trend with future games.

We know MK will have this feature in some way. I'm hoping that SSB will allow for uploading videos, and possibly even hosting tournaments on miiverse, like MK8.

wait wait wait

Lanky and Tiny? wat

is that just a placeholder, or are they in the game?

Wait, uploadable replay data for MK8 has been confirmed?
