I was thinking about something earlier.
It sounds quite retarded, but the more I thought about it the more I became convinced once you get past the learning curve it could be pretty sweet.

So, for the argument's sake let us say you're playing a hearst curtain pewter with an Xbox 360 controller.

Now, the biggest complaint naysayers have against using a controller for HCPs is that the look control is always "too freaking slow."

I was thinking what if you could have the look sensitivity at 11 when roaming around/scanning the horizon for enemies- FAR too sensitive for actual battle.

But the second you zero in on an enemy or target you press the left bumper (or any other button) and the sensitivity would ratchet down to 3 so you could erm, fire at will.

It'd be cool, because evading attackers you would be more agile, yet when attacking you'd still be able to enjoy the precise aiming we've become accustomed too.

inb4 how do you throw grenades

I was thinking the other day how cool if the PS3 controller kinda copied the wiimote a little bit and had a pointer above the L button. To completely crush the competition, they could actually put in TWO pointers and it would be like having two guns. the just need to put in a swivel so you can point at different levels of the screen. i think that would be pretty cool and the fps look controls using a joypad

IIRC, Gears, Uncharted, GRAW and others have done this (COD4 too, maybe). When you aim, your look sensitivity goes way down.

This is true.
I guess I was thinking for a First Person Shooter, and on a much more drastic scale.
I came upon this gem of an idea while thinking about how to play tribes on a console because you have to look up down/all around.

May work really well in some games if you got used to it but it still wouldn't be close to a mouse on a PC. I think some console games probably have handicap auto aim in this fashion already.

MGO(maybe normal MGS3 but it wouldn't really help there) had aiming to camera orientation when you flip to fpv and you can adjust that sensitivity then go to iron sights(L1?) and the aim would slow down a lot. But good players didn't need the iron sights and hit headshots without them or they clawed 4 buttons on the controller at once to crouch, aim up abit, go fpv, go iron, and shoot at the same time.

So you want Goldeneye?

Sounds like it could be a good idea.

It might be even better if you were using something with an analog trigger like the GC controller so that how much you press the trigger determines how much your joystick sensitivity is lowered.

Don't mind me, I've been playing a lot of Brawl lately so my head is stuck thinking about everything through GC controller configurations.

No, that's not a bad idea.

I mean, basically it's the same idea as those nice logitech mice that let you change the dpi of the sensor on the fly.

Ended there for me :lol

The Deus Ex PS2 port did this, not with iron sights, just standard aiming with much lowered sensitivity. Though it went from about right to way to slow rather than crazy fast to managable, it was still pretty cool.

joy2key let's you assign a button to change sensitivity (higher or lower). This is the only reason I can play RTS and FPS games with a gamepad on the PC. I have no idea why this hasn't been adopted for the consoles as well.

I was thinking of a control scheme for the ps3 controller where you can use the right analog to look around quickly while the six axis would be used for more fine tuning and precision of your aiming.
I wonder if developers have tried this.

MGS4 uses the motion sensor in it's first person mode.

I cannot see any other developer using the motion sensor for looking/aiming in a FPS game. Unless they're Ubisoft or some shit and want to add a "USES TEH SIXAZIX CONTROLS" bullet point on the back of the box.
