I used to be such a big wrestling fan and Savage was my idol. I found all his gimmicks to be lame after I got over the wrestling but here I am once again realizing how amazing this man was.

R.i.p. man. :'(

I still chuckle everytime I read that his brother is Lanny Poffo (aka Leaping Lanny Poffo).

Wow, he looks so old with the grey hair.

RIP

It's pretty cool how far-reaching Randy Savage's legacy is. I've seen everyone from the MLB to John Gruber pay their respects.

Gutted. Which is weird, because I haven't paid much attention to wrestling, WWE TNA or otherwise, in the last little while. But Randy Savage was a huge part of my childhood.

I never wanted to jump into the screen and kill someone like I did back in '86 when Savage took out Ricky Steamboat's throat on the guardrail - and that incident was my introduction to the world of kayfabe.

RIP Macho Man. A sad day. :(

So controversial among us kids the next school day.

yep, just paid their respects on PTI on ESPN.

Wait, wtf, this guy was Macho Man's real life brother?

Holy shit, I hated this guy so much as a kid. With his fucking poetry.

I see the resemblance now.

I always thought the fake wrestling was crap, but it's always sad when someone who entertained probably lots of people is killed. R.I.P., Randy Savage.
Back in this guy's heyday I was 7-10 years old so I every time a grown-up told me it was fake I thought they were just messing with me like when they told me my eyes would stay crossed if I crossed them too much. It was real to me dammit. I cheered him on when he was a face, and booed the hell out of him when he was the heel only to cheer him on again when he turned back to face.

When I finally did realize it was fake in about 94 or so I stopped watching, but those guys entertained me a whole lot on the TV prior to that.

Yea I remember those days. Now days I just watch it and don't think about the fact that it's fake. I was hardcore into following the behind the scenes stuff years ago but I started hating the sport because everyone I liked turned out to be a dickhead. That's why I just quit paying attention to that crap.

After that I found my enjoyment of the business again.

Yeah I mean I wasn't meaning to be disrespectful when I said that. I just wanted to say it is the idea of losing someone that caused much joy for people and seemed to be a decent human being that is sad to me here, rather than his long and illustrious career in wrestling. I knew from a very young age it was fake, and so that idea coupled with seeing sweaty men in their underwear grappling one another instantly made it unappealing to me.

But no doubt these people are entertainers, and if you like that sort of wrestling Randy Savage clearly was the cause of a lot of happy nights for people. They still required a lot of physicality that is on its own fairly impressive.

I'm a UFC guy though.

His best days were in WCW. The DDP, Sting feud, and then joining NWO and having the Madness gimmick was what I'll always remember him for.

My favorite wrestler of all-time. Without question. Those elbows off the top rope, eccentric fashion and awesome stage/mic presence are what I lived for on Saturday mornings in the 90s. I haven't watched wrestling since Owen Hart died, but when I did The Macho Man was the reason why.

Goodbye, old friend.

Whether he was in the ring or talking to the camera, Randy was amazingly good at being a living comic book hero. The voice, the demeanor, the costumes, he was bigger than "real" life in ways that few entertainers of any kind could ever hope to match.

Maybe if you stopped thinking of it as "fake" wrestling and started looking at it as a live stunt show brilliantly executed by funny and lovable characters like Macho Man you'd be able to find some enjoyment of it too.

I remember adults telling me it was fake and thinking, well, everything on tv is fake and you still watch other stuff.

I really don't want to get off on a rant because this is a remembrance thread, but I agree completely with your statement and that's usually my token response when people talk about wrestling being fake.

I don't think anyone under the age of 10 honestly believes that its real, so I don't know if people say 'ITS FAKE' thinking they are letting some big cat of the bag or giving away a huge secret. I even have a problem with the word fake. There is nothing at all fake about wrestling. The outcome is SCRIPTED and that is a big difference from calling it fake. Falling 20 feet off a ladder into a table and getting 3 broken ribs isn't fake. Nothing at all fake about getting a broken neck from a botched piledriver, or tearing your triceps completely off the bone in the middle of a match.

Yes the outcome is scripted and pre-determined, but so is every single drama you've ever watched on TV since TV was invented.

My dad likes to give me shit about still watching wrestling at age 37. Pretty pathetic that he does this. I don't go busting down his door at the end of Law and Order on Thursdays screaming 'FAKE FAKE THIS SHIT IS FAKE'.

Just seen this news after being out of the house all day! Absolutely gutted! Loved The Macho Man and loved that era of Wrestling...

RIP Macho Man

Like I said there is some level of admiration I have just for the sheer physicality of it, but it's too fake for me to get engaged and the 'stories' are lame. If I want to see that sort of thing I'd just go to a play or a musical, which have great stories on top of being fake.

But it's not meant to be disrespectful. It's just not for me the idea of two sweaty men in underwear grappling it out in pre-determined outcomes. I have respect for the athleticism it requires to pull off some of the jumps and to be safe about it at the same time, but it's just not entertaining for me.

OOOH

Fuck...

I loved his voice so much. Gonna play some WWF/WCW games in memory of him.
