Cannibalism* during the Russian famine of 1921:

The Russian famine of 1921, also known as Povolzhye famine, was a severe famine in Bolshevik Russia which began in early spring of 1921 and lasted through 1922. This famine killed an estimated 6 million, primarily affecting the Volga and Ural River regions.[1][2][3]

The famine resulted from combined effects of economic disturbance—which had already started during World War I, and continued through the disturbances of the Russian Revolution—and Russian Civil War with its policy of War Communism, especially prodrazvyorstka, exacerbated by rail systems that could not distribute food efficiently.

One of Russia's intermittent droughts in 1921 aggravated the situation to a national catastrophe.

I know these neither rare or crazy, but hopefully some of you enjoy them and will keep the thread alive.

Of all my 18 years of internet browsing this is the greatest thread I have ever seen, so much history of times forgotten by many generations. Thanks to all that have taken the time to link photos and blurbs. _b

surface-of-venus.jpg

The surface of Venus, taken by a Soviet probe. Temperatures are a balmy 887ish °F (475ish °C) and atmospheric pressure is around 90 bar, or the equivalent to the pressure you get half a mile under water.

Wow, first time I've ever heard of a probe ;landing on Venus. Certainly didn't get anywhere near as much publicity/news time compared to the Mars landing.

Like many people from the the Midlands, my family were involved in the Miner's Strike, with my uncle being injured by the police at Orgreave.

Notable for being an early instance of kettling tactics, with the police herding picketers to a location where they were surrounded on three sides by police lines, where they made the first deployment of "Short-shield" riot squads - police with (as the name implies) shorter shields and truncheons, intended for an offensive role.

I started reading this thread yesterday, I'm up to around page 11 now. Been nabbing pics and Google searching descriptions as they are a fantastic look into the Human race since the early 1800s.

The Tsar Bomba, the biggest nuclear bomb ever detonated.

This is how it looked like (Seen from a 161 KM)

It may seem like any other bomb, until you see this comparison:

Blew my mind.

Jesus Christianson. That Tsar Bomb going off at the end of the video. *shakes head* You can't tell me all that testing over the years hasn't damaged the Earth in some way, like contributing to global warming.

Not historically important, but some of my old family photos I came across. All taken with my cellphone from the original photo. So excuse the quality.

My great grandfather. Picture should be taken around 1910 or something like that I guess. Guy had style!

THought this was cool. I don't know who's who in the photo, but I immediately recognized the location. So I went out and tried to shoot from the same location. Tried the best I could. :D This was taken some time before WWII broke out according to my father.

Again, don't know who this is, but it's such a powerful picture and I would really like to know the history behind it. Sadly, I'll probably never find out. :(

Some kind of parade car. 'Groot bal' means 'Big ball', like a dance. I couldn't really make out the date, but it should be 1946 or 1949.

Some family members having a toast. I don't know why, but this one immediately managed to put a smile on my face. Such a lovely scene from simpler times. No exact date. My guess: somewhere early 40's.

My granddad on the right. Dude had style also!

SHould also be my granddad, but I'm not 100% sure. Taken some time after WWII.

The stuff of nightmares:

hbn50CW.jpg

A very old school photo. No idea who's in here. No one from my family recognized anyone, and sadly nothing was marked on the back. I think this should be very 1900's. I think the child in the middle of the picture with the smudged face could have been haunted...

Another old family portrait. I think this could be somewhere between 1900-1910? I can't really tell, but the clothing kinda reminds me of that era.

I have a lot more, so if anyone is interested I might do some more.

This is the first picture taken from space, in 1946. Taken on a rocket made by the nazi (the V-2) but launched by the americans.

"The Fox sisters were three sisters from New York who played an important role in the creation of Spiritualism.[...] The two younger sisters used "rappings" to convince their much older sister and others that they were communicating with spirits. Their older sister then took charge of them and managed their careers for some time. They all enjoyed success as mediums for many years."
They later admitted it was all a hoax but Spiritualism was getting popular already and the Fox Sisters's confession went unnoticed. A bit as if Jesus admitted it was just a joke but no one was listening.

Lately I have been obsessed with early Coney Island history, particularly the Dreamland amusement park.

It was built in 1904 and burned down in 1911. It was the largest of the three main parks, which included Dreamland, Luna Park, and Steeplechase Park.
Night shot of the exhibit of premature babies in incubators (a new technology at the time)

Fighting the flames.
"Fighting the Flames, cast of 2000, including 120 fire fighters, complete with four engines and hose wagons, and an extension ladder fire truck had to save a full sized six-story hotel constructed of iron that was set on fire. First there was the cry of "Fire" as people in the street spotted flames in the hotel's lower stories and the excitement in the neighborhood as the alarm was turned in and they stood watching the flames leaping upwards from story to story."

The numbers seem exaggerated but still interesting. (notice the guy who has jumped from the 6th floor toward the totally safe looking canopy below)

Parachute Jump at Steeplechase Park overlooking the beach in 1957. Coney Island's slow decline started with the great depression, but remained a big attraction due to the public beach and easy train access. Daily crowds were in the hundreds of thousands.

Built 2 years before the Cyclone, the Thunderbolt sat abandoned for 20 years until it was torn down by Giuliani in 2000 with questionable justification

Glad I've found this thread, will bookmark and add things here and then. My mum collects postcards and sends me examples of weird ones she finds/buys.

Not all that weird, but here are some men comparing chickens -

I'm not from the USA but this is what I think of whenever I hear of Pennsylvania, like from the deer hunter movie.

Pittsburgh went through a renaissance in the mid-80s, shifting from a steel town to more of a banking city. I grew up there and we actually left in the mid-80s, just as that re-invigoration kind of started. Pretty amazing to see the city today vs. how I remember it.

Yeah, I never knew that it changed its economy. I can't envisage it being a more modern city, just how it's represented in film and tv, I.e. Back when it was all about the steel mills.

Look at that smug guy third from the right in the front row. He just knows those other weak-ass chickens don't compare to his.

I'm not sure if this counts since it's from the 70's but it's a great picture if you're a fan of the Clash, Joe Strummer was quite the athlete back in the day and apparently ran both the London and Paris marathons without training and got completely wasted on both nights before.

Damn. The thought that they'd do a test like that so close to people is staggering.

A throught that crossed my mind: we are living history right now, guyys! I sometimes get emotional and think aoubt what it must have been like to live in times of some of the old photos. Well, in 40 years our world will probably look very different as well. To me the most remarkable things often are the similarities rather than the differences. I guess overall people stay the same.
