Rare: Kameo should have "scrapped everything and started again"

Still one of my favorite games on the 360, but I see where a different art direction might have at least drawn more interest from the Xbox crowd. The underlying gameplay was great, and I think most would be surprised at the challenge of the game and the finesse required to get combos and A rankings.

They can always bring Kameo 2 back to life with a darker tone...right?

It was a game with a fairy for an audience that likes shooting and killing things.

I hate that they think that about the Xbox audience, even if it is true. You fuckers and your shooters.

The problem is Microsoft. They think too short-term.

Ratchet wasn't a big success when it launched, but it helped bring a new audience to Sony's platform. By the second or third iteration of the game, it had accrued a large fan base and sales increased. If this was Microsoft, Going Commando would never have been made, never mind the PS3 sequels and PSP spin-off.

This. I think it comes from their early days of Halo, Project Gotham Racing, and Fable doing really well from the outset, where it was an obvious choice to continue the franchise. Not sure how Rare got another Viva Pinata in there, but I'm glad they did as it's really one of their best in a long time.

I really liked it, and I thought it looked amazing for its time. To me it's really the only Rare game this gen that captures even some of that N64 era feel.

Couldn't disagree more. Presentation aside (it does look and sound pretty good, which is what drew me into it in the first place), it's a failure on almost every level. I'm not sure what point I was at when I gave up (the Xbox tells me I have 480 points), but I couldn't take the janky controls and awful level design any longer. It just wasn't any fun to play anymore.

It makes more sense then you think. Creators are often their own biggest critic.

Thank you, Microsoft :(

Read this in my copy of Edge last night, although I can't help think that CVG have framed it for hyperbole.

I've been meaning to try Kameo for a long time. This doesn't help to get me motivated.

Doesn't really matter about Kameo, Rare have made one of the best games this generation without a doubt in Viva Pinata. That game is so addictive. I think I'll bypass Kameo and just pick up VP:TiP instead.

Rare peaked in their early N64 days and are struggling to live up to that name.

They should just change name again.
After all that's what they did when the Stampers realized it was going to be an impossible task to live up to the Ultimate Play The Game's name :D

Wait, what? Kameo was a mistake? That game was awesome. I'd love a sequel though by the sound of it that's definitely not on the cards.

While not perfect, Kameo was a great game and something I think every 360 owner should at least try. It had an outstanding soundtrack too.

A sequel to this game could've been really special, but he's right - the Xbox audience just wants to shoot and kill stuff unfortunately.

Ha, dissed both Rare's former and current target audience in one fell swoop. Sort of kidding, I take this about as seriously -- or probably even less -- than Microsoft's recent comments regarding their audience.

I'm on the fence about the Kameo thing. It's not an embarrassment, but it's not a Rare masterpiece. It felt like they were getting back on track, but not fully there. My favorite Rare game of this generation is Nuts & Bolts.

Alongside the whole viva pinata thing (minus the party game), which doesn't really play like it's suited for their target market they do indeed seem confused. Shame. Kameo and Viva pinata are among the few games iv'e had the most fun on the 360 with, calling it a mistake is just bewildering.

although i didn't like it and especially didn't like the presentation, i know a lot of people think it's a great game (and many find it truly beautiful :lol ), so that should be some kind of compliment to the designers.. They did it right for many people...

Except it wasn't a turd.

Sure the game lacked a bit of polish (common symptom of a launch game) and could have been a lot more fleshed out but it's a still a lot of fun. Good variety, some clever puzzles, absolutely fantastic bosses, really nice visuals both technically and artistically, and an amazing orchestral soundtrack.

This post nailed it.

The worst things I can say about Kameo is that there were a lot of awkward moments with some of the scripted sequences. And while the world was beautifully animated, the characters inhabiting said world were two-dimensional simpletons.

That's kind of my opinion on it. Kameo is a good-looking game and a lot of fun.. but a little rough around the edges. Had they gone ahead with a sequel, I think it would have been like Ratchet and Clank, a very rough first game with a dman near perfect sequel.

I found it a pretty nice game.

The morphing mechanics were certainly interesting.

Water level boss was a total bitch tho.

there is no giantrolleyes.gif big enough for this quote.

Hey, if kiddeh means old Rare and Mario and matoor means their new shit and Halo, i'm a fucking diaper shitting baby.

They're crazy I loved the game. Especially when I learned how to get high combos and kill those white trolls....

He actually says that games not about killing/shooting things should not be (and should not have been) made on the 360.

And that Nintendo's audience is kiddy.

wow. What a sad videogaming world that would be where Rare gets to decide which games are made on which platforms.

For a launch-game, I thought it was very enjoyable, and it was a treat on a visual level. At the time, it blew pretty much everything else out of the water ( graphically ). Granted, it is years since I played it through, but I have fond memories. I have no idea how it would hold up today, though.

I played Kameo and it's actually pretty decent game. Story, characters and art design are complete crap but there's some good gameplay in it to carry it through. If they want to talk about games that should never have been made, Perfect Dark Zero is way worse than Kameo.

Both Viva Pinata games are really great, honest.
Ok I agree for Viva Pinata(I liked it),but the rest is average IMO.
Maybe I expect too much from Rare but they set the bar high with their previous games.

Viva Pinata, on the other hand, is an absolute masterpiece if you're into the simulation genre. It still has a weird disconnect from having childish-cutesy presentation and pretty slick, complex mechanics, but it really is an excellent game, particularly at the higher levels.

Viva Pinata is awesome. I had my girlfriend, myself, and the neighbor's kid playing it. Addictive, interesting, unique..

This is from the same Edge article that the Banjo: N&B platformer thread was based on. There's a bunch of info about most of their games that is interesting to read.

Anyway, Kameo is my favourite Rare game since the buyout. Wish 2 was still in production

Will Rare be creating any core games from now on??? I quit *THAT* room if they decide to focus on bloody Kinect only.
