RARE Rebranded for 25th Anniversary

*Plays Viva Pinata: TIP*

Actually also fuck modern Rare for having pester plant Venus Pinata Traps in my garden which ultimately results in a war where my pinatas face a zerg like threat which multiplies every time one's taken down. This all results in an empty garden :(

I'm surprised Kinect Sports was the only game Rare announced. I mean, they are a pretty big studio. What the hell are the rest doing?

Working on a Kameo sequel supposedly. They showed it at the end of the Circus du Solei show.

Atleast Banjo N&B was a worthy sendoff (fuck the haters).

RIP Rare. :'(
Agreed once again.

I guess David Wise jumped the sinking ship just in time.
Yup.
Rare is still following Nintendo, in a way.
But, you know, the "old" Nintendo, the Wii Sports one, not the "today" Nintendo.

Can we get the N&B and Pinata Rare back? please...

n&b one of the top five games of 08 crew repping it

Kameo 1 footage shown during the Cirque du Soleil event, not the sequel which was shelved in 2007 :(
Why did they show footage of the first one? Did they hint at a sequal or is everybody assuming it?

No real reason. It caught some people unaware and they thought it was the announcement of a sequel. Since that didn't come up yesterday during the conference, I doubt it was anything important. As a matter of fact Rare's presence (or lack of) was embarrasing, even the logo vanished quickly :(

They were just showing the progression from early Xbox 360 games to Kinect software. Which is kind of ironic because in this case early Xbox 360 software looked better.

Word. Really wish Rare made a sequel to N&B and made the game more like Showdown Town and less like Logbox 720.

Jumping around Showdown Town, collecting the musical notes made me pine for a 360 Banjo-Threeie. :(

showdown town was pretty masterful in so many ways. loved it.

It's no wonder the Stamper brothers left a few years back. I wonder what they're doing now?

Also, I was originally saddened when Grant Kirkhope and David Wise jumped ship, but now I'm so glad they did.

I've defended them for years, but after their redesign and yesterday's E3 conference, I have to finally concede that the Rare I loved is dead. I wish I could be optimistic and believe that they could yet revive their classic franchises, but I've been clinging to that optimism for several years, and absolutely nothing has been announced. The secrecy they're renowned for might have been fine back when they used to put out stellar games on a regular basis, but considering the last game they released was two years ago, and the Kinect garbage we say yesterday is the only thing we've heard of them since, I'm giving up.

They can't even take any credit for the XBLA ports of the Banjo games and Perfect Dark, as 4J Studios handled them.

I agree that Nuts & Bolts was a fine sendoff. However, I just wish it had been a proper Banjo platformer. That would have been a PERFECT sendoff.

It's a shame that MS has decided to use one of their best studios to produce a Wii sports/fit/music knockoff - better looking and with deeper interaction yes - but the core concept was done years ago with the Wii.

considering what Rare used to be...

...it's time for them to go from REbranded to DEbranded.

"pathetic" is the only way to describe the offerings they've given Microsoft over the last decade.

point out the last original game they really succeeded at making in the last 5-7 years. it's not like they weren't given a big budget and enough freedom to do whatever they wanted within reason.

then tell me what you think MS should have done with them.

I don't think they are as inept as some make them out to be - although I am willing to be proven wrong.

It seems to me that the numerous projects which turned out to be cancelled suggest a lack of leadership and overall direction. Both inside the Rare management and the part of MS in charge of them.

woah woah woah.

what the fuck happened?

i haven't been following e3. has rare been killed or are they just committed to shit games now?

The only game they showed at E3 was Kinect Sports. Extremely lame, considering they had zero games released last year.

And the room is empty again :)

Goodbye Rare.

Site is up, actually uses the entire screen now:
http://www.rare.co.uk/

For the long-term fans, rest assured we're not turning our back on the entire glorious sprawl of Rare history - especially with 2010 being the year of our 25th anniversary. For now, though, we're taking the opportunity to capitalise on our work with Avatars and the once-in-a-lifetime opportunities offered by Microsoft's latest system, and we have our hands pretty full with making Kinect Sports as good as we can possibly get it. We'll keep you apprised of its progress in the months ahead.

Always willing to return, Rare.

Looking at the Kinect Sports screens, it looks like Avatars have been changed slightly to look a little more 'human' and a little less cartoony.

Wonder if this is just that game, or a change to Avatars in general.

it must suck for them to see retro working with nintendo on DKC while they are stuck with microsoft making minigame collections.

good this only helps to distance from the true Rare which was the golden years between NES-N64.

Has rare done anything of value since they left Nintendo?

Did you play Viva Pinata, Kameo, or Banjo N&B?

Is it even worth replying to you? I mean, really?
