Rare, Unreleased Original Legend of Zelda Prototype Unearthed.

Merry Christmas, everyone! We've got something special for you today: a prototype of Zelda no Densetsu, better known to most of us as The Legend of Zelda.

zelsmall.jpg

This is an early build of the original FDS version of Zelda, complete with different room layouts, sprite changes, new music, and odd glitches. As a lot of you guys know, it's very unusual for first party prototypes like this to make their way out to the public, so this is quite a find.

This build shows how the initial design of Zelda was notably less difficult than what we ended up playing on our NESes (and Famicoms). Practically all of the gameplay changes from this build to the final were made to make the game more challenging:

The prototype, pictured on the left, tends to use an easier selection of enemies than the final, seen on the right. Frequently the enemies are fewer in number in the prototype as well. Money is considerably easier to come by, too, as you can see from Link's maxed out rupies.

Some early designs for the monsters can be seen in this prototype also. For example, notice how the Pols Voice didn't initially have whiskers:

All of the known changes in this prototype, including altered gameplay mechanics and new game over music, have been documented in extreme detail and will be posted over at The Cutting Room Floor.

I read this as "Rare(ware), Unreleased Original Legend of Zelda Prototype Unearthed" and was very confused.

Me too.

Not as cool as the conclusion I jumped to, but still a neat story.

I wonder how many rebellions agent died to get that floppy. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I do believe that Zelda started out as a fds game, right? I kinda wish that proto had more 'meaty' changes.

So did I.

The logistics of how this floppy has traveled over the last 20 years must be pretty crazy.

What would that disk sell for on ebay?
Nes collectors are INSANE. A copy of the cart used at the end of movie The Wizard went for 14k a couple of weeks ago. It's just a multicart with 3 games (smb, outrun(?), tetris(?) a custom title screen and 2 minutes time limits. I do believe the owner has an account here too, maybe he'll show up

What's interesting is that Nintendo ran stuff like a sweatshop back then, and I bet they were even more hardcore about destroying internal builds than today. It's a miracle that this floppy survived.

I love these kinds of things, it's like digging up an archeologic relic.

what i would really like to see (we're deep into nerd territory here) are pictures of the nintendo offices during the development of zelda, mario etc...

I want to see what kind of hardware was used

it was originally released as an FDS game in Japan, i believe. i'm pretty sure the cart version was released years down the road.

Yeah - started out on floppy disk, then they brought it to the US on cartridge since we didn't have the FDS system, then re-released it in Japan on cartridge.

Awesome.

According to the music in the NSF, the continue screen music is completely different. It's nowhere near as good as the original.

they should release this on Wiiware. anyone agree?
I don't. The way I see betas is an interesting glimpse in the development of a game, not as something that should be released as retail.

Even Lameduke, the Duke 3D beta that was completely different from the retail Duke 3D, shouldn't have gotten a retail release. It was released for free, however.

Why would you do that? said:

free on Wiiware then! agree?

Skeptical. It's way too easy to fake the .fds file with a hacked version. Where is a video of somebody popping the game into a FDS and playing this? If this is a beta, it should give you a choice between two items at the start from the old man: boomerang and sword.

Edit: I can't seem to get beyond the title screen. The NSF file works and has 32 sound files, but I'm surprised the title and Koji Kondo's name are in English.

I think you may have it confused with the Nintendo World Championships cartridge which was used in an actual competition in 1990. The golden cartridge that was given out to the top 10 players has sold for a bit over $21k. It's considered by many to be one of the holy grails of NES collecting.

Edit: Apparently there are 26 golden cartridges.

WOW. I wish my Uncle was alive to read this. :-/ I remember watching him save Zelda. I thought my brain was going to collapse when Ganon was defeated. To many flashes at the end of the game. I wonder if the game ends the same way.

I've always wondered...why did they change the font from the Disk System to the NES? The Legend of Zelda wasn't the only game in which this happened, either. I believe Metroid and Kid Icarus are the same way. Maybe they were using some kinda ASM libraries that were ever-so-slightly different for the Disk System and NES, and each provided a different font?

Nope. The font is stored in the TSA for both region's games.

Just one of those things, I guess.

So you're saying it's stored in the game, right? Which is what I was saying. Which would support my theory that they used slightly different libraries for the NES versus the Disk System.

Pretty awesome.

But I won't be happy until they unearth this mother fucker:

Ocarina of Time's development cycle was pretty crazy.

Damn there are 26 of them? I thought there were 24, that's why we made 24 of these:

What was the Master Quest version that came out for the Gamecube years later? I though that was the 64DD expansion...?

Sorry, I'm not a big OoT guy. But I am curious about prototypes and such.

I really need to try Lameduke someday.

I think the Master Quest was just OoT with re-arranged puzzles and higher difficulty.

Anyway yeah, I'd love to see Zelda 64. I remember an old-ass magazine preview from '97 or so with a bunch of pics that didn't make it into OoT.
