Ratchet and Clank Community Thread: Rip Ya a New One

It's been impossible for me to think of a workable R&C subtitle. It kind of surprises me each time I see that Insomniac usually picks one that works well enough.

My personal standard for what makes a good R&C subtitle is 1.) Something that just sounds good on it's own, and 2.) the innuendo. Honestly I can do without the innuendo. I much prefer Into the Nexus over Into the Nether Regions because the latter just sounds dumb to me lol.

Since Insomniac devs are reading this thread, you might want to notify the movie marketing team that the bio in their twitter account still says the movie is coming out in 2015.

I grew up on these games (I'm 18) and will always love them.

Up Your Arsenal in particular is one of my favourite games ever and I have played it through 16 or something times on my save file. This thread reminds me that I need to buy the HD collection and play them all over again, or at least the original in time for the remake and movie.

It's hard for me to rank how much I like the original R&C to the others ( I do like it a lot but something in me tells me it's wrong to place it above some of the other main titles). My faves list probably goes UYA > GC > ToD

Ah man, sorry I'm late.

since the movie comes out in April, do you think the game will launch at the same time?

That's probably the plan seeing as the game was delayed because of the movie.

Vitti just said something about only Spring being confirmed for the game and not April. Still, I assume it will be out within a few weeks of the movie.

Same here. R&C 2002 is rough gameplay wise when compared to the sequels, even with GC already the difference is night and day. But, in my opinion, its atmosphere still hasn't been touched.

Another thing I loved is how R&C had loads of multiple paths, there could be entire paths even for minor things like skill points, new weapons or gold bolts. I still remember how Gaspar was almost useless storywise but had a lot of secondary paths, like that secret one hidden underground, which you have to reach by jumping into a volcano.

Going Commando is one of my favorite games ever, can't forget that birthday where my Dad bought it for me and I played it from ten PM till the sun rose. Just had a much better flow of light platforming/puzzle solving and the ability to strafe made the combat way more fun to engage in combat compared to the original. It made the guns feel useful, rather than the original where the wrench seemed like the most efficient way to attack. Felt like what Metal Slug could of been if they ever made it 3D...and not some weird top down monster.

Up your Arsenal was pretty straight too, improving the controls even more by adding the TPS aiming, but had more of a focus on shooting. Never got to experience the multiplayer though, much the same opinion with Deadlocked (though it's very much a weaker game). Tools of Destruction was my first PS3 game and it was a good game to sink a lot of those early consoles hours into. Also appreciated the Quest for Booty's focus on more traditional 3D platformer, it was a fun three hours.

A Crack in Time though, only one of the standard gameplay entries that I never completed. My PS3 got the yellow light of death while playing it, and I had to take apart my 60GB PS3 so I could return it to Blockbuster. Been meaning to get around to it, but I find it hard to spend more than five dollars on it. Did a good two playthroughs of Nexus when I got it for cheap(er).

But yeah, the new game is pretty much a day one purchase. Feeling for a R&C game and the budget pricing only helps. Hope the movie is pretty decent too... and that my theater actually gets it.

I've been a fan of this series since those very first live action commercials. I love the aesthetic of the games, the humor and Ratchet and Clank themselves. What I played at Gamestop has me wanting the remake badly. I wonder if they'll retain some of the advances from Into the Nexus.

That's exactly what I wanted to hear. Ratchet and Clank had so much fun factor going for it, even in its marketing and I think that's something that's been forgotten in the modern gaming era. These games are like playing a Saturday morning cartoon, which is probably why it translates to a kid's movie so well.

I might make a quick trip to Gamestop on my way home from the gym to check out that demo.

And, subscribed. Love this series. It was one of the games that ended up as my gateway into Playstation, along with Jak & Daxter and Sly Cooper. Going Commando was actually the first one in the series I played, but I very shortly after got all the main PS2 games and Deadlocked, then later the PS3 games up to A Crack in Time.

Not sure where to rank the games right now. In my mind Up Your Arsenal and Crack in Time are tied for various reasons, but I'm planning in a couple weeks to go back through this series from the beginning. All the games I have, plus Into the Nexus which I still need to buy. So probably after going back down memory lane I'll know whether those two games still hold the same spot.

The Playstation 3 games still look fantastic, if you ask me. I sometimes let Ratchet stay idle while I look at all the cool space ships that rocket above the city skyline.

I can't wait for the upcoming PS4 game, so that I can perform the same action.

Insomniac needs to realise a lot of their audience have grown up over 15 years. The difficulty level in the PS3 ratchet games were a complete joke. ACIT had a 'hard' mode but I still only ending up dying maybe 3 times at most in the entire game to non-platforming elements.

That's my hope for the new Ratchet, an actual hard mode considering I'm into my 20s now and now play games like dark souls, dota and other things which aren't designed for a young audience like Ratchet is. I love the series and will of course be playing the next, I just hope they realise this.

I'm not expecting hard to actually be hard in the PS4 game. We'll see though...

I've never played a ratchet and clank game and I've owned every Sony console.

I need to change that.

I don't have a vita any more and my PS3 has died so the PS4 game will likely be my first R&C game. I always meant to play crack in time back on the ps3 but never got around to it.

Yep, they will focus test on young people and just assume older players will buy it. It's a weird concern I know but the combat has just become a snooze fest with overpowered additions like the disco thing and many others. Almost nothing does the damage of some enemies in 2 and 3. They really need to tune it harder and balance the gadgets this time for hard difficulty or it will be ACIT all over again, which had the worst combat in the series (but amazing art, puzzles and story).

Your opinions are wrong. A Crack in Time is the perfect game by every metric. ♥

I love the game too don't get me wrong, but it had its flaws. Aside from the difficulty that I mentioned, there was a serious lack of enemy diversity. It was primarily fighting the same 3 units throughout the game, of which none of them were all that interesting. The bosses were somewhat lackluster, except for the final fight which was a series highlight (but still 1 shot it on hard mode, loved it anyway though)

Almost everything relating to the puzzles, platforming, art, story etc were perfect.

Wait... (CiT spoilers)
you one shot Azimuth? I remember him being a sponge

Yeah it was a long fight, and probably the best fight in the entire series. I don't know, I'm not trying to sound like an elitist dick, I'm only expressing concern as a huge fan of the series, but they haven't really updated the difficulty for long time players. I've beat the series 2-3 times over (going commando probably 5 times) and over time they've only made being hit by things less punishing, when they should be going in the other direction (for the hard difficulty - balance it for the younger audience for normal difficulty, that's cool). IIRC it was tight but yeah one shot

On a funny note I remember playing TOD for the first time and popping the disco ball and nuking down the final boss in record time. Never touched that gadget again in my replay

I agree about CiT having the worst combat in the series aside from the original, but maybe for slightly different reasons. I'd prefer that a new R&C game actually force me to buy armor again, but It's not going to ruin the series for me or anything. The combat is fun enough for me either way. The enemies were definitely more vicious in the PS2 games in comparison to CiT. I can't remember ToD as well because I only played it at launch (I was on my 6th or so playthrough with no stopping point in sight until my file corrupted) and it's been at my cousin's house ever since. I recall certain sections/enemies in that game being pretty challenging but I'd have to play it again to know for sure.

I picked it up ToD again for cheap a few months ago, so I'll probably play it again sooner rather than later.

Edit: Yeah, Vorselon round 3 was pretty hard. Probably more because of the endurance test than anything else though.

Greatest franchise in gaming history! It really exemplifies almost all of the qualities I love in gaming: vibrant, cartoony worlds; sci-fi influence; quirky, satisfying weaponry, and humor.

I can still remember when and where I was when I first played the franchise. I was a freshman in college. The game had come out some time before I found it, but I wasn't as in tune with gaming as I am now. I was playing through one of the demo disc that used to come with the PlayStation Magazines. The demo featured two levels, which blew me away. I played that demo over and over, until finally picking up the game a little later. Every game since has been bought day one.

It's an unpopular opinion, but I really enjoyed All 4 One, even as a solo experience. Sure it was different, but there were a lot of details that I thought were the some of the best in the series. The environments and art style really nailed the CreatureBox look, which is something I've always hoped Insomniac would push for more. Plus, Dr. Nefarious' side story
about being conflicted with whether he loved or hated Ratchet and Clank
made for some of my favorite interactions. It also helped that it kind of hit me at a time when I was getting burnt out from the constant traditional releases.

I'm ecstatic were getting another entry! I played the demo and loved it! Love that it merges the old and the new with classic weapons and Future series favorites like Mr. Zurkon and The Groovitron. Love the completely new stuff like the Pixelator. Love the horsepower the PS4 can provide to make the world look even more beautiful. I really can't wait to see what all it holds.

Hey GAF,

if you want a fun look back at these amazing games, take a look at the Gametrailers Ratchet and Clank Retrospective - I wrote it!

Really love this franchise, have had near-death experiences with All 4 One and FFA releasing and being utter trash, Into the Nexus having low sales, so happy this is getting a PS4 release! Would have loved if it ended with Crack in Time, but happy to see it make it to the PS4.

Into the Nexus could be pretty hard at times. Needed some strategic use of the nightmare box just to beat the last arena fight.

That section in Silox where you go against the gauntlet of enemies and the giant robot boss thing while Clank goes dinklebot (well it was something like that) was pretty hard and I was stuck on that for a bit. I didn't really have trouble with anything else though. Well the final boss gave me some issues but not as much.

Ahh ratchet, this was my crash bandicoot substitute after crash went to shit. The crates and the tnts and the sometimes linear levels made me feel like I was playing a next gen crash.

Let's try to keep this thread moving with some Ratchet and Clank 3 talk!

I've been playing R&C 3 again this past week and it honestly never gets old. I'm on my third playthrough (of this session) and am trying to get 100% so upgrading all of the weapons, getting all trophies and armour etc. I had also attempted to do this for R&C 2 but that stupid Clank Zapper needing to be upgraded made me give up in the end. This game has so much less bullshit moments like the dumb boss fights of 2 which makes it so much easier to just replay the same levels over and over. It never gets tiring and I can see myself playing this game so many years down the line.

The endgame of R&C 3 has to be my favourite in the whole series. From Holostar Studios onwards, the game keeps getting better and better and the challenge ramps up significantly without feeling cheap. My favourite worlds are Kerwan (of course), Zeldrin (and Starport) and Koros. Not to mention the lategame guns are also so much fun to mess around with. The Qwack-o-ray is borderline broken while the return of the Bouncer, Tesla Coil and (a nerfed) Shield Charger allows for some great combat moments in the later levels.

I also have to mention this - I just got done upgrading the Ry3no and it's still one of the most disappointing weapons in the series. It goes from a power weapon of mass destruction (V1) worthy of the RYNO name to a weaker but okay weapon (V2-4) to a real piece of garbage (V5.) Seriously, what were they thinking with that?

UYA really does never get old. I could play that game over and over again indefinitely if I didn't have anything else to play (Not literally but I could play it for a longgg time). That's pretty much what I did as a child. I can do that with Going Commando too, and I was doing it with ToD for a bit until my file corrupted. Koros is probably my favorite planet in the series (at least one of them), and a lot of it has to do with it's music.

I personally never hated the fully upgraded RY3NO. It was slightly worse than V4, but still a pretty godly weapon.

Went and booted back up the first Ratchet & Clank last night, to begin my quest to replay all these games again in order before the new game comes out. Wrapped up Metropolis, it's still pretty telling that I remember so many of the small details of this game, even when it's so old and feels pretty different to where the series is now. The lack of strafing, no xp for guns, stuff like that not being here hasn't been an issue for me going back. But then again I just got off of replaying the Jak trilogy and that uses guns in a manner similar to this so that could be part of it.

Hmm, maybe I need to give it a second chance (after I upgrade the rest of my arsenal) It kinda puts me off the same way the Zodiac did because you have little control over what enemies you kill with it, which I don't like. Maybe I'm just remembering wrong and it wipes the whole screen or something lol

Ahh the trusty RYNO. Can't wait to play the new game after playing the original on PS2. One of my most looked forward to games as both me and my kids can get into it together.

Anyone think we'll get Ratchet and Clank PS4 stuff from PGW?

At least with the RY3NO, you see people die if the get hit with the missiles before the white flash, so it's a bit more satisfying than the Zodiac, and it has a lot more ammo.

I think at most we will get a new trailer of the film and the game but nothing more. Maybe a new demo (on the show-floor) that has new levels, though I don't expect that to be live on stage for the conference.

We know when its coming out and we know both the game & film are releasing at the same time.

Its a case of they either give us some more gameplay or nothing until the game launches.
