Ratchet and Clank Community Thread: Rip Ya a New One

CS_ou50WoAAt6t9.jpg:large

Might be wrong but isn't that the Pokitaru sewers?

EDIT: Saw you already said that xD.

Man CiT is still sooo good. I got to Lumos yesterday and that might just be my favourite planet in the whole series. The Tetramite sections are really well done and nail the tense atmosphere. Then we have the Agorian invasion with so many secret areas to explore with the hoverboots. The Hydra Tanks and Agorian warleaders are so fun to wreck and it helps that you get the Plasma Striker here too. To top it off, there's an actual challenging turret section!

Aside from that, I would say that Zeldrin Starport from R&C 3 or Metropoils & Blackwater from the original are my other favourites, but Lumos is just so much fun lol.

Trying to finish ACiT all these years later.

I don't know, it's one of those games where every individual element is fine; I like the Clank puzzles mixed with the Ratchet shooty stuff. But on the whole it doesn't come together as well as Tools of Destruction did for me. The pacing just isn't there. And I'm not enjoying the optional planets as much.

And I'm near the end and it just feels like level design has kind of gone out the window. They're just throwing more and more enemies at me and it has become a grind.

I still really like CiT, but yeah level design is my main gripe with it as well. I think all of the elements come together well on the first playthrough, it's just that the Clank sections in that game specifically bog down subsequent playthroughs for me.

I think the moons are awesome though, but they're too many "kill all enemies" moons and not enough platforming moons.

Yes! I wish I wasn't on mobile so I could post the godly soundtrack that goes along with Eudora. Actually that planet had two great pieces of music.

Hell yeah, fam.

My main gripe with the game was the enemy types. like we fought the same guys. over and over again.

Who is gonna be doing the Remake's OT? Cause this is my idea for it:

Ratchet & Clank |OT| The Thread Based on the Game based on the Movie Based on the Game

Kevin Munroe does a thing every week where he posts a sketch related to the R&C movie on Instagram, so I'll probably post it every now and then because this thread will probably need an excuse to be bumped why not

This was pretty much decided on as soon as that first gameplay trailer came out lol. I forgot who was doing the OT.

Finally got a chance to play the PS4 demo. Holy crap. It's so vivid and colorful and gorgeously animated. Everything just feels larger than life (maybe that's the Best Buy kiosk that forces you to stand like a foot from their big-ass screen). It plays great, too, of course, but oh my god the graphics.

So hey, turns out I still like Ratchet Deadlocked just as much as I did the last time I played it (which was about 6 years ago). The short length and mission based structure makes playing through this multiple times a bit less exhausting than the last three games and the 2-3 playthroughs it took to 100% them.

The one thing I always liked the most about this game was getting the right combination of mods with certain weapons, and how at various points you can bring the game's frame rate to its knees. I normally like it when a game has a consistent, high frame rate but every now and then it's fun to have an opportunity to cause the game to go into slow motion due to an absurd amount of shit going off on screen.

But man, I still miss co op in this. The last time I got to play the game in that mode was at launch and that was so much fun. Alas I don't have a second controller and someone else to rope in to playing through it again through me.

I played Deadlocked on PS3 last year and I don't remember any issues. Either my memory is bad or I was lucky.

Man, It's sad that some people just dismissed Nexus right out of the gate because of it's 30fps. There's a great game there, and it's a shame that a lot of people missed out. I honestly think that if Nexus was a full length adventure, it would be my favourite entry in the series. There are a lot of great ideas there without a lot of time for the player to get settled. The planet where you're collecting the horns and zooming around in the jetboots and jetpack simultaneously is such an exhilarating experience. I love how you have so much control over how you traverse the environment. Yet 5ish hours in (I'm being generous) and it's all over. I'm happy that R&C PS4 has the jetpack back and I hope that it is better utilised there. There's also a lot of great weapons (Nightmare Box, Netherfiend, Blizz O Matic) with very few duds. Plus that RYNO. Marvelous.

Also of course during my challenge mode run through I get the destructopalooza glitch lol.

Totally agree about Nexus/Into the Nexus. I've always maintained that on a minute-to-minute basis, it's about as good as Ratchet has ever been.

I like high framerates as much as anyone, but ruling out a great game for not targeting 60 is just nuts.

Sad to hear this about RGHD

Wait what is this destructapalooza glitch? Is there anything I should do to avoid it when I'll play ITN?

The problem with Nexus isn't really that it targets 30fps, it's that it's missing that target more often then not (and feels unpolished).
Other than that, it's pretty good if not better than the latest entries in the series.

Man, It's sad that some people just dismissed Nexus right out of the gate because of it's 30fps.
I dismissed it because it came after All for One and Full Frontal Assault and I was disappointed by both of them, so I assumed it would be a similar deal. Framerate never came up as a consideration.

Though I plan to correct that after I finish going back through the remaining mainline games. Taking a little break after Deadlocked before moving onto the Future series.

Into The Nexus is one of the best R&C games, but just shorter. Good variety, pacing, and story. And it has by far the best Clank sections in the series.

Makes me confident in the new PS4 R&C.

Into The Nexus is indeed rather concise but it's also very good. Not up to A Crack in Time's incredible standards, though that's not a knock on it.

I'm not sure if I agree 100%, but they're up there. It was a pretty ingenious little 2D game, manipulating gravity was both fun and challenging.

It would be cool if Insomniac could do a spin off with that premise on mobile platforms, rotating your phone to change the gravitational pull. I'd buy it.

The glitch doesn't allow you to enter the arena and therefore you are unable to progress. As far as I know it happens at random but apparently it can be solved by resetting the system. I haven't tried it yet but I kind of remember a lot of people had to start new games because of this on release.

Yeah, I completely agree. The clank sections in 2 and 3 are fun and all but a chore to play through multiple times in challenge mode. I can see myself playing the ones in Nexus multiple times without getting bored
and I'm gonna have to if I want those skill points...

I wouldn't be surprised if R&C PS4 ends up my favourite in the series. If it's basically Nexus quality with an extended development time to polish all the small things then Iit probably will be. I forget, is the game delaying the movie or vice versa?

The level design of the planets in ItN was generally great, especially Yerek and Silox imo. It fell apart (probably was rushed) at the final planet, but the museum section was good, and the Biobliterator cameo was awesome. I would have loved to have seen the gravity stuff expanded on more also. I always thought a longer Nexus would be better than CiT, but that's only if it didn't have the extremely limited amount of camera options that ItN has. There were only a few available in ItN (and they were all super similar IIRC). The system of only being able to shoot where the camera is facing doesn't really do it for me, and often made me feel disoriented. The screen got claustrophobic and overly busy a lot more, I got blindsided a lot more (especially in the arena), and it was just uncomfortable feeling at times. That's my main gripe with ItN at least.

The PS4 game is using the same system, but I told a dev at the forums about the problems I had with ItN's camera (other people there had problems too) and he said there'd be more camera options this time around. My suggestion was having an option that works like it does in the previous games' non lock strafe mode schemes (psuedo lock-on, shoots where Ratchet is facing independent of the camera) and then having a button to toggle "aim mode" - which would work like how it does in ItN so you could aim more precisely when you needed to. He said there's something like that available, so it gives me a bit of hope at least. He also said he'd talk to the team about the issues but doesn't know for sure if anything like that could be added/changed at this point in development. I never used lock strafe, so it could be why the new mode feels extra weird to me, idk.

I don't really find the clank sections in 2 and 3 much of a chore to play through again, but the ones in CiT are definitely a chore now (for me), but they were amazing the first time around.

The game got delayed because of the movie.

Soooo... Who's up for some list wars? Always the best way to revive a dead thread :p
Let's talk about Weapons. This series has so many amazing (and not so amazing) weapons of mass destruction. I think that as much as the games have evolved, the weapons have been consistently brilliant. Here's some of my favourites in no particular order:

Plasma Coil (Ratchet 2 and 3): This along with the Bouncer and Minirocket gun are my holy trinity when it comes to R&C2. You really don't need anything else to shut down every threat in the late game and the Plasma Coil is always my default weapon for racking up those multipliers in challenge mode since it covers such a wide area and has a decent rate of fire meaning you can lock enemies in a loop where they can't ever hit you. Of course it loses marks for having little ammo, but come on, it would be (more) broken if you didn't have to put it aside every now and then.

Qwack-O-Ray (Ratchet 3): The series has a lot of fun transformation weapons and the Sheepinator could easily have made this list if not for the godly Quack-O-Blitzer. Usually it takes a decent amount of time to transform a larger enemy but with this, nope! Almost instant transformation on most enemies and there's even a motherfucking phoenix to clean up what's left after the egg grenades go off. The fact that this gun as infinite ammo is ridiculous! For as monotonous as grinding crystals in the sewers can be, this weapon makes it hilarious at how easy it is to rack up 20x multipliers there without breaking a sweat.

Rift Inducer (CiT): CiT has a really frustrating roster. The new weapons are mostly solid but there's too much brought over from ToD, despite those weapons being some of the best from their original game. I really wanted to put the Tesla Spikes on here just because of how unique they are, but the Rift Inducer is just too good. The Rift Inducer from R&C 3 was okay, but not very interesting from a visual standpoint and very slow (at first, at least.) CiT's take on this weapon adds a huge tentacle monster which yanks enemies into it's dimension, never to be seen again. Despite having barely any ammo, which can be frustrating, the Rift Inducer is great for large crowds and is a nice support option. As for what happens to the enemies it drags away? Better left to your imagination, I think.

Nightmare Box (Nexus): I loooove Nexus. A big part of that is the fantastic weapon line up (ignoring some of the reskinned ToD/CiT weapons lol) The Nightmare Box is such a great utility tool it puts the decoy glove to shame. It doesn't break in what seems like 2 hits and it can actually deal out some damage after some raritaniam is dumped into it. The fact that there are a few different variations on the nightmare that lurks in the box is great and that scream when it's first unleashed is so satisfying. Definitely the weapon that got the most use out of me in Nexus even after I fully upgraded it.

The RYNO (almost all of them!): C'mon, I wasn't going to leave this off the list. The only question here is which one is my favourite? I think we can safely eliminate the first RYNO. It was a product of it's time and fuck the amount of time you have to spend to get that thing. The second RYNO is a lot of fun (especially when you can break the game by getting it in the FOURTH level!) and probably my favourite from the originals. The third RYNO is frustrating for me since I don't enjoy the fully upgraded version nearly as much as the vanilla one. ToDs take was very similar to the RYNO 2 in function, but had a really nice laser effect. CiT's RYNO V plays the godly 1812 Overture as you massacre your foes which honestly, is probably enough to put it on top. Nexus' RYNO VII plays 'Night on Bald Mountain' which is great, but I prefer CiTs. So yeah, CiT and the RYNO V takes it for me. It's just so amazing mowing down waves and waves of foes with the RYNO.

Also I just learned that the RYNO VI Protosuit from All 4 One is a thing. I never got too far in that game, how is it?

There are so many great weapons, I'll stick with five.

Blaster - Ratchet and Clank. Very simple, but I favor it over any of the other starter pistols in the series. I love the sound it makes and I like holding down circle and watching the bullets stream out. Special mention to the Dual Omniblasters in Into the Nexus mostly because there's two of them!

Vaporizer - Going Commando. While I would agree that the Bouncer, Plasma Coil and Minirocket gun are the "trinity" (slap on a Shield Charger for personal protection) especially in run and gun situations, there's nothing like zooming all the way in on an enemy that doesn't even know you're there and going for the headshot. Very powerful weapon.

Mag-net Launcher - Tools of Destruction. Very useful, I really like how it immobilizes enemies, and it gets quite powerful when upgraded. Works great on Cragmites!

Tornado Launcher - Tools of Destruction. Okay so really, where else are you going to be able to spawn and control your own tornado? The Sixaxis controls took a little getting use to, but allowed Ratchet to move freely, very useful on small enemies. I had the most fun with it on Sargasso when those groups of snail-like creatures popped out of the ground. V5? More like F5 amirite?

Constructo Shotgun - A Crack in Time. Probably the most useful of the constructo weapons, and what a great idea! The ability to customize the constructo weapons allowed these weapons to be tailored to your preference. I was always on the hunt for more mods, scouring the moons for that one mod.

Argh. I'll make sure to do some backup saves when I'll play it. Thanks!

I'm planning to finally play it very soon.

Nexus :bow

I've finished it for the third time in 4 days and got the platinum. Freaking loved it.

Good to hear! Any chance of more detailed impressions? It would be nice to know what you liked about it.
plus this thread needs some discussion lol

Edit: Shouldn't we be in community by now? Even the mods have left this thread to die :(

Someone asking about RYNO 6 Protosuit? It was ok. Really powerfull but very Limited ammunition. However it can be abused nicely in singleplayer. AI equips the same weapon that you have but AI has infinite ammo. So just dont shoot and AI destroys. :p

Crack in Time had a small problem with weapons. The weapons themselves were fine, but their upgrades were bad. A lot of times you could barely even see the difference. Also there should have been Constructo-Rocket launcher. Reusing rocket launcher was eeh.

Honestly Rocket launchers have been surprisingly bad in current games. At this point its either Negotiator or Warmonger switching between, bleh.

As for favorite weapons that havent been mentioned:

Bouncer was always fun weapon. A simple cluster bomb that actually works.

Gravity Bomb. I like how starter weapon in R&C2 becomes a mini nuke. It also had expensive upgrade in post game.

R&C3 upgraded Agents of Dread are also amazing with their freaking Nuclear weaponry.

Groovitron obviously. Nightmare Box is a downgrade of it, but it is hilarious to see Into the Nexus final boss cover its eyes in fear, so its all good.

And best transforming weapon is Winterizer simply because it plays christmas tune. Its so hilarious. Althought Qwack-o-ray may be more powerful in hindsight.

What's bad about the new rocket launchers to you? I love the Negotiator, but don't like the Warmonger. I base this almost purely on looks and the name lol.

I wish they used that Rocket Launcher over the Warmonger. The last time we've seen the Negotiator was CiT. The Warmonger has been in A4O, FFA, Nexus, and now the new one.

Well, the Negotiator is in the PS4 game, but...

You know why? Atleast with pistols and bombs they try to come up with new variants. With Rocket Launchers they just gave up. We havent had a new Rocket Launcher in ages. Functionally they still work, its just that, we havent had a new one in a long while. It would be neat to see new Rocket Launcher that would have unique upgrade. Then again a lot Rocket launchers just become fire many Rockets at once weapons.

I suppose someone could argue that making new weapons just for sake of new weapon would be bad, but reusing 3 to 4 times the same weapon?

I definitely would rather them make a new weapon for the sake of making a new weapon lol.

Well, It's classic R&C done great lol. Surprisingly enough, some of things I expected to not like a lot(based on the previous installments) were fixed. It has a darker tone than the previous R&C games, clearly it's not Jak II (thank goodness) but there a lot of dark and claustrophobic areas especially Yerek, but also on the Nebulox 7 and Silox, plus the orphanage, plus
Cronk & Zephyr :(
, plus that moment on Silox when you're desperately going up escaping the uprising water, which reminded me of that infamous part on 2002's Blackwater City...don't know if it's intended, if so then kudos to Insomniac, it pairs up with the infobot on Yerek,
the golden weapons
, and the thug Dropship bossfights which are very similar to the R&C2 Endako one with great nostalgia inducing moments. After Qforce I thought Insomniac wasn't able to bank on nostalgia, well I changed my mind after Nexus. :D

Unfortunately though, 30 fps and not so amazing OST went as expected :(
just like Qforce, the problem is not that it's 30 fps though, it feels very slow regardless. It might be due to the old hardware, judging from footages neither Sunset Overdrive or R&C 2016 suffer from this and they both look quite smooth despite 30fps

Well would you look at here, cut weapons is found in R&C2

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dxfb1CnR6js

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8N-gW7Caq-c

It looks like a mix of Mine Glove and Tesla Spikes. The boots looked kinda ehh, so no wonder they were removed.

Those were reused in TOD and Size Matters

The flame boots weren't actually a weapon but the power up on some armors(lord, Size Matters armor sets were ace, I wish Insomniac would make something like that)

Now that I think about it, a Size Matters PS4 "emuremaster" wouldn't be bad, though it would be based on the inferior version
