Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction Official Thread

PS3 (Cronk) and X360 (Zephyr) robots are there.

They're based on 360 & PS3? That's a new one for me (then again, I never played any previous games).

Are they just parody, etc? What am I missing here other than Zephyr being the 360's codename?

At one point Zephyr mentions his superior online capabilities, and Cronk says that unfortunately his cpu fails 38% of the time. Zephyr mentions Cronks vast storage space is filled with garbage.

Zephyr's CPU has a 43% failure rate. :lol

There are some pretty funny references to PS3 via Cronk as well, but I don't recall any off the top of my head.

Plumber's still there,
with an awesome 4th wall joke, as well as a really important part in the game's conclusion! Great appearance from him, hehe.

Just got to the planet Murdog (? the one with the arena or something) and I must say the game has me impressed, great title. Graphics are spectacular but what impresses me the most is the humor. Hope Insomniac will keep up this AAA streak on the PS3.

@Zephyr and Cronk, can't wait to meet those guys and see what their PS3/360 thing is all about. I love these little inside jokes like in Heavenly Sword (weak point!).

They are new to the series. Zephyr's design looks like X360 in part. His head is basically like if you took the X360's HDD and split it open so that it has mouth.

dont know if this has been discussed, i saw a ratchet and clank commercial last night on adult swim( iwas watching family guy:D )

it was all CG, and took place in metropolis. it had like some rock music playing the whole time and just showed him like falling on to the grind rails running away from the bad guys and eventually shooting them

Actually, I think jstevenson mentioned that the commercial is all in-game engine, running real time...

wow thats in game engine?? impressive. im a HUGE ratchet fan (lol i already bought the game and i dont even have a ps3 yet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) hahaha, ( im buying the 40gb friday:D :D :D )

Beat the game last night, and all I have to say is WOW. The game seemed fairly easy for the first half of the game, but the difficulty quickly ramped up the last few levels and I absolutely loved it. I died quite a few times on the last boss
when he would cover the screen with those darn missiles >:(
, but it was quite satisfying once I beat it. I'll be starting challenge mode today.

Insomniac = teh awesome.

If it's like cutscenes in R&C (which is what I think JStevenson was saying for a US commercial) it's using in-game assets and engine, but it's recorded into a video, with some post processing effects added. The difference between in-game visuals and cutscenes is pretty small anyways, and they do use 100% realtime cutscenes in many places.

I thought the US commercial was supposed to have "It's a wonderful World" song playing?

UK commercial is supposed to be 100% gameplay from the game btw.

jstevenson said:
Up to Sony to release that. I can say that it is made entirely from in-game assets.

We wanted to focus more on the characters and give them a chance to shine on screen.
Doesn't mention whether it's in-engine or not.

Where'd you hear about the UK commercial? Is it airing already?

I played the demo yesterday and it was amazing. The near CG quality graphics are some of the best I've seen rendered by a game engine. Although, there are 2 things I noticed during the demo:

1) During the intro and cut scenes there is some stuttering. It's obviously playing back a video recorded using the game engine, but why does the video playback stutter and why wasn't this caught during beta testing? Game play is silky smooth, though.

2) Collision detection. Why is it that you can position Ratchet's body inside of one of those circular objects with the metal tubular frame surrounding it?

Two small gripes, but it's definitely a Top 5 PS3 game.

Can I get a confirmation from JPN PS3 owners (Bebpo??) about this game? Does the game display japanese language for everything (menu, subtitles, cutscenes, and other misc dialogs) in Japanese on a JPN PS3? A japanese friend of mine is hoping to play this without importing...

Anyone? D:

I'm a few hours into the game now and that stuttering in the demo when the camera swoops down over the city is the only framerate drop I've noticed so far :-)

I'm just wondering if Insomniac used Bink to encode and playback their cut scenes. I recall Mark Rein also complaining about stuttering issues that they were currently trying to resolve during the playback of Bink movies in UT3 PS3 cut scenes.

Maybe. Gears had some stuttering in the playback too yeah.

Yeah, that stuttering at the beginning is really the only place where it happened to me as well. It doesn't happen all the time there either. It's just like in the demo - most of the time it happens to a varying degree, but sometimes it doesn't happen at all. My guess is it probably happens because there's some loading or decompression going on at that moment.

I finished the game last night... is the games supposed to just boot you back to before the boss fight after the credits?

I thought that was odd.

oh..I imported it from the States..didn't want to wait.

I did the same thing on the way home tonight, cost me £48 which is probably only £8 more than the UK one will be. Bargain.

Ace game.

Only if you do not select challenge mode.

Game is entirely English but you're stuck with the eyebrows.

I actually did my 2nd run in Japanese for the heck of it and the Japanese dub is pretty shitty. Ratchet is like 10 years old and the villian is the lame typical anime villian. Clank loses a lot of his personality as well. The only voice I liked was the main girl.

Ragnarok10 said:
All languages/cut scenes are stored on EVERY disc and will play based on what regioned PS3 it's in. Basically, JPN PS3 will play Ratchet in Japanese (Asia Ratchet model, ect).

No, that's just for the eyebrows.

If you have your XMB set to English you will get English voices no matter what system you own
If you have XMB set to Japanese you will get Japanese voices no matter what system you own

I wonder if there are any more voice tracks on the disc?

I got stuttering during most of the fmv scenes. Even had dialogue skip for a sec once. Preferred the real-time cutscenes by far.

You paid more than the euro price? I got it earlier and cheaper (paid 55 euros) from videogamesplus.ca. Well, back to playing it.

Always do.

I don't really mind, I'd rather pay the import shop price than wait for Royal Mail...

Great game, my only problem with it are the space ship boss battles. They seemed way too easy, you could kill most of them by just flying your ship in a circle.

The Flamethrower is really overpowered, especially in Challenge mode, the boss in the Arena falls so quickly to it, I couldn't believe it! Tornado, as others have mentioned, does have it's uses. I found myself using the blades a lot and the Buzz Blade Gun just to see how many I can get flying around on the screen at once.

Did anyone notice that the Gadgetron Lady doesn't tell you what the final forms of weapons do in the initial levels of Challenge mode? I'm not sure if it's just the initial levels, I just finished Arena and it didn't tell me what my Omega Flamethrower became...

I also expected more branching for the weapons in Challenge mode because aside from the Golden Groovitron, is there any other reason to collect Raritium?

...because it didn't become anything :\

Woo! Just saw an awesome commercial for this on Much Music with the song What a Wonderful World playing and at the end stating the new console price.

Hmmm I don't think she said anything about the ones that became lvl 5 either though. I will check with the other weapons that are of the Omega class I guess...

About Cronk and Zephyr in the Skin Select

Cronk - He's old. He's senile. He's in need of yet another valve replacement. But still, this retried old war bot has a ton of fight left in him!

Zephyr - He may be prone to routine system failure, but this feisty war bot still guns with the best of 'em. Too bad his warranty expired ages ago...

Anyone from Europe import this game?

Got my US copy yesterday and it wants to update to firmware 1.94.. This firmware isn´t available for PAL users as far as I know..

Do not know if I dare run the update on my PAL PS3.. Anyone tried?

Thanks man,

MUCH better then the ads they've been running for PS3.

Those black onyx ads look pretty hot actually. They're frigging all over the web and I'll just run my mouse across them just to see the cool transforming effect.

The commercial looked cool. There was no sound but I can't say it evokes the same OMG AWESOME that the old commercials do.

FW updates are global and I don't think 1.94 is going to be distributed on PSN, so just install it. It's fine.

Barakov said:
Yeah. I'm definitely not into the whole insane asylum white wall six axis ads.

Well I was a little shocked they weren't initially doing the "weapon test" thing, but how many times can you make that funny without it also feeling old.

I think this is a much better way to promote the games fantastic visuals, and usher in a next gen Ratchet.

Tanod, the above video had sound are you sure your speakers aren't off?

Thanks for the commercial video. It's funny how hard it is to track down the commercial to a game that's very new and high quality/production values.

So for those who have the game, how is it? Is that 8.5 score from 1up a travesty? Is it a 9+ caliber game? Thinking of getting it when I get my PS3 back.

9+ for sure and 1UP's 8.5 is not a big deal.

However, Gamespot should be seriously embarassed for giving the game a 7.5.
