Rate the Mario role-playing games

I agree that SMRPG have a FF-like style. But, it's still the most traditional turn-based one (Magic, a party of three and you can change it).

You know, some elements may like outdated today, but I think it has aged well (reminds me a lot of Chrono Trigger, it's still a very enjoyable game). So like I said, it deserves a port/remake.

Mario & Luigi would be the closest thing to a real sequel to it, but I just can't stand the fact you only play as Mario & Luigi :lol

LOL, you know who's gonna be the last boss since the first intro sequence.

You go into a topic about people rating the Mario RPGs, and don't expect any sort of spoilers?

Agreed. SMRPG is still easily the best of all of them. I'm starting to expect this level of awful taste on GAF.
Your taste has always been grossly incompatible with others, Compass.

1. Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (GBA)
2. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (GCN)
3. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (SNES)
4. Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time (DS)
5. Paper Mario (N64)

Geez, I didn't realize that people actually disliked Super Mario RPG. Come on, guys! Shimomura music!

Paper Mario: The 1,000 Year Door-I actually enjoyed Paper Mario's story better, but this advanced the battle gameplay, adventure gameplay, and humor. I LOVE setpieces.
Paper Mario: I suppose that I feel like Superstar Saga is the better game, but this is the one that I feel is grounded most in the Mario universe, which is something that matters to me. Basically, it's a downgraded version of its sequel in everything but story.
Mario And Luigi: Superstar Saga-It has the best in- and out-of-battle gameplay in the series, is hilarious, and is much more unique than the others. If the story and writing were perfect, this would be number 2.
Super Mario RPG: Legend Of The 7 Stars-Shimomura. Fun battles. Mallow. Pretty fun. It's just that both the Paper Mario and Mario And Luigi series have better ideas for battles and writing.
Mario And Luigi: Partners In Time: It's really good and I'm not annoyed by any aspect of it. It's just that the others are fantastic.
Super Paper Mario: It worked and the writing's pretty funny, but the ideas weren't taken half as far as they should have been. I was surprised, because Intelligent Systems may be my favorite studio.

1) Paper Mario - Love this game. By far the best.
2) Super Mario RPG - I also don't understand the hate for this. Maybe it hasn't aged as well as most games, but still a very fun game to play today.
3) Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga - Great intro to the handheld Mario RPGs.
4) Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time - Meh, was not much of a fan of this. But it wasn't BAD, just wasn't anywhere near as good as the others.

I haven't played TTYD yet unfortunately, but I plan to. Have it at home.

in order:

paper mario 2:ttyd
mario & luigi: superstar saga
paper mario
mario & luigi: p.i.t.
super mario rpg

can't wait for the new one.

I only really love Superstar Saga. Phenomenal game with a battle system I found more entertaining than the PM games, mostly due to the Bros. Attacks. It also has Fawful. I started both PM games and both didn't manage to keep me interested. I finished rpg but that was a long time ago, hardly remember anything from it.

IAWT-- Wait Paper Mario is too low. :lol

I'm not surprised to see Partners in Time as a "bottom of the list" entry for a lot of you.

Personally, I thought that the game excelled past SuperStar Saga in some ways. In gameplay it most certainly did, though I can't decide whether I like Bro-skills or attack items more.

If there's one thing I can say almost made me dislike PiT it was the cutesy factor. My god, the game was quite childish, and I thought SuperStar Saga had already pushed the boundary!

But really, both Mario and Luigi games are top-notch non-traditional RPGs. Can't wait for the third installment coming later this year.

princess peach's sweet voice will soon be the bread that makes the sandwich of cackletta's desires! and this battle shall be the delicious mustard on that bread!

. . . the mustard of your doom!

One of the things I immediately enjoyed about SuperStar Saga was that it put focus on the two actual Mario Brothers themselves, fighting together.

I mean, really, the idea for the game was just fantastic in the first place.

1: Paper Mario. I remember having the most fun with this one.
2: Paper Mario: TTYD
3: Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga

4: Mario & Luigi Partners in Time

Super Paper Mario and Partners in Time are both pretty much garbage.

Super Paper Mario isn't a Mario RPG, guys.

The only way to appreciate the game is to see it as a sidescrolling action/adventure game with platforming and RPG elements.

I kinda agree, but what you're basically saying is that SPM isn't anything and it doesn't belong to any one genre so it effectively cannot compete in any listwar.

Seeing as it retains a lot of the elements from the Paper Mario series (which are definitely rpg's) and really doesn't come close to being any other game (I think the game qualifies more as an rpg than a platformer), I'm inclined to just call it an rpg and be done with it even if I know it doesn't really ring true. Just for the sake of argument it should be included.

1. Super Mario RPG
2. M&L Partners in time
999. Super Paper Mario

I don't care if you don't consider SPM an RPG. It's an awful game. The story is incredibly long winded and uninteresting. (where I thought both SMRPG and PiT were both interesting, funny, and charming). The game consists of moving 1 screen right, changing to 3D view to examine the area, and repeating. There was zero difficulty and depth when it came to fighting enemies.

SMRPG's gameplay is a tad simple and easy, but it made up for it with great level design, and great pacing. PiT added great gameplay during the battles, but it was too annoying having to control 4 characters, so I rank it lower.

I haven't played any of the others, sadly. I really want to play Superstar Saga and the Paper Marios. Maybe I'll get the N64 one on VC.

Weeaboo mentality.

The game could have Mario in a post-apocalyptic future, doesn't change the fact that the game is still a lot of fun to play.

I guess I'm just not 'into' the aesthetics of whatever MARIO is supposed to be today to care or notice.

I'm confused. Wouldn't "weeaboo" folks like Super Mario RPG more simply because it was developed by square? I mean, on every "weeaboo" chart I've ever fictionally heard referenced, square RPGs easily outrank anything by Nintendo.

SMRPG < the Paper Mario / Mario & Luigi games because the latter are, for the vast majority of us, more fun. The battles are actually enjoyable.

I don't think most of us are saying SMRPG is a -bad- game, just that it is inferior to the other games by Intelligent Systems or Alpha Dream.

6. Super Mario RPG: Legends of the Seven Stars
5. Super Paper Mario
4. Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time
3. Paper Mario - Excellent game
2. Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
1. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

I would rate them as a better RPG series cash-in with a licensed property than the Kingdom Hearts games.

Paper Mario: TTYD
This game made me laugh so often, for example how Luigi reports on his 'heroic journey' all the time (
Especially bragging about winning a Mario Kart grand prix by starting pole position and accidentally going in reverse so everybody crashes.
). Even though it felt less connected to the Mario universe than the first Paper Mario game there were still a lot of references to older Mario games. The party was also way more interesting than in the N64 game.

Mario & Luigi: SuperStar Saga
Although I didn't care for the universe that this game is based in, I really did like the fact that you essentially control two characters at the same time tackling puzzles and flipping switches and stuff. The active turn-based battles are also a little bit more interesting than in the Paper Mario games, I feel there's more to do in the M&L games.

Paper Mario
I actually played this game after I played the sequel, and while gameplay-wise it's a step back I still genuinely enjoyed playing Paper Mario on the N64. Maybe memory fails me but I think this game was based in the Mushroom Kingdom and most enemies and NPCs look very familiar if you've played the Super Mario Bros. series. I definitely liked the world in this game better than in TTYD though.

Super Mario RPG
I've recently played this game for the first time and don't really understand the hate but whatever. It wasn't brilliant, I didn't like how the overworld was designed and plit into a number of small locations in which you could actually walk. I also think many of the bosses were quite unimaginative but I really liked the enemies in this game. I also liked the familiar locations and the fact that the Star Road is used once again. Mallow and Geno is great sidekicks too.

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time
I haven't finished this game yet, I'll have to start over since I don't know where I quit anyway. I'm not sure why this game lost my attention, maybe it's because of the world design. Just not feeling it I guess.

Super Paper Mario
After a 20 minute intro cutscene which bored me to death I saved and quit the game. Occasionally I'd come back and play one or two levels but man.. this game has way too much dialogue and way too little challenge. The game is also not very charming imo, the twilight (?) universe is very uninspiring and nothing motivates me to continue playing.

Pretty much. He was so excited to toss around his newly discovered, derogatory Interweb word, he ended up using it completely incorrectly. I shook my head and moved on. Now you've gone and brought it up, and now I'm depressed again.

1. Super Mario RPG - The originator, awesome characters and dialogue. Cool minigames, hidden bonuses and secrets, cool reimagination of the mushroom kingdom, I felt a lot of things came to life in a new light. I rebought this on VC and still love it. Battle system is one the best I've played in RPG's, and was only improved in the "sequels".

2. Mario & Luigi: SS - Best battle system of all. Loved the way they did the skills, timed hits and dodges, weapon upgrade puzzles, etc.

3. Paper Mario - I liked a lot of concepts in this game, characters were cool and unique, so were the puzzles. Badges and battle system were pretty unique, and it's exactly what should be expected as a "sequel" to SMRPG's battle system. Boss battles were good.

4. Paper Mario 2 - Probably not giving this game as much credit as it deserves... didn't really like the characters compared to the first one. Don't remember liking the story too much, except for the part iwth Rawk Hawk.

5. Mario & Luigi - PiT: Did not seem as good as the original. The four player dynamic didn't really work for me. Items instead of skills was kind of lame. The maps felt so badly implemented, it felt like the same thing over and over.

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Paper Mario (N64)...

If I were to continue with the list I wouldn't have enough space to put an adequate number of ">"s

quick and dirty:

1. Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (SNES).
1. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (GCN). (couldn't decide between these two)
3. Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (GBA).
4. Paper Mario (N64).

11. Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time (DS).

1. [GCN] Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door
This game is incredble. I couldn't belive my eyes, when I first got in a battle. I laughed so hard. You actually play battles like you are in a thatre! It's awesome! It's FRESH. NEW. This game is REALLY something DIFFERENT. The dialogues and the story are simple, but does not suck. They are great. You will laugh hard with this game. Mario's and his company gags are great, and finally we got HPs even for party members. Battles are amazing, the whole is one of the best gaming experiences I haver had. It's not frustrating but it's not a cakewalk either. It's not long or short. Does have sideqest but not too much and too much important level-side. This game is absolutely amazing and I still can't belive my eyes when I see the graphic. It's beautifull. It's one of my best gaming experience and one of the best RPGs I ever played, despite the franchise (which is obviously not meant for RPGs). I wish that nowadays RPGs were this fresh and innovatives, but getting in the right way retaining the same things that are the stamp of the serie.

2. [GBA] Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
This game is awesome, really. The script is even funnier that PM:TTYD but the story does suck a bit (I won't spoil it for obvious reason) for who have beated the game you can read it here
the thing that they already knew Cakletta was going to steal Peach voice so they replaced it with and etc etc so you have played like 50% of the game for nothing is just plain stupid and on and on.
. Awesome character, better than PM:TTYD. Fawful is one of the most quotefull character ever made in videogaming history: they all have their funny gimniks. Battles are good, but toooo easy... the whole game is a cakewalk and you will never die unless you suck at RPGs or can't time buttons for some reasons. Really. Just get a hit and then you'll know when to press the right button to dodge it next time. Items are too forgiving and Bros Actions are too easy to perform. Battles are fun as hell anyways, and puzzles are godly. This game have PUZZLES fuck.

3. [N64] Paper Mario
This game places third on my list, because TTYD is fairly better than this game, and it's right under M&L1 for some other small reasons. This game is good, but it feels awkard in timing, and there is a small quantity of decent attacks. You are just going to attack, attack, attack or use some powerfull FP consuming jump/hammer attacks. The whole game is just fucking easy and the story is average. Graphics setted a series because the whole paper thing is just motherfucking amazing.

4. [DS] Mario & Luigi: Parthners in Time

I hate the babies. I FUCKING HATE THEM. I hate that Mario & Luigi CANT attack with hammer without them. I hate the field control. I hate the fuck out of this game for just fucking around with the battles. No more Bros Actions. You now have to pay for them (the fuck?). No more hammers. Babies uses them in a shitty way (again, the fuck?). Story sucks because things happens in the past but not reflect in the present, the whole thing is just a stupid plot hole and a huge WHAT THE FUCK.

5. [Wii] Super Paper Mario

I wont talk about this game because i'm going to get banned for the ammount of hatefull bullshit i'm going to say.
Protip: Nintendo, bring BATTLES and 3D Paper Mario again, thxbai.

I found the SMRPG battles quite enjoyable. I mean... they are slower than today standards, but they give me a more traditional feeling, that's why I choose SMRPG as 1st place. But yeah, I admit I'm also a fan from old Square rpg's :D

What I want to say, the battle concept wasn't too bad, it was even taken for Sonic Chronicles, too bad the battles in that game were WAY MORE SLOWER lol

Slower? I think the battles in that game are quite fast.

Also, the only battles in the game that even come close to being challenging are the last few bosses. Everything else is near-pathetic, which is another reason why battles go fast. Half the time I can just use Mallow's Thunderbolt and clear most enemies off screen in one hit.

No. The dialogues make the game. If you actually WANT to appreciate the writing of Intelligent Systems, then you'll end up enjoying yourself. If you go in wanting just a straightforward platforming/RPG game, you'll probably end up hating it because there's a lot of text that "gets in the way."

SPM is definitely not a kind of game that you can just categorize into one genre. If anything, you'd need three genres to explain the kind of game it is. This is because it doesn't really excel at anything other than the presentation of dialogue. It's more of a jack-of-all-trades as far as platforming and RPG elements are concerned.

Not only that, but the concept of the game is quite novel, and therefore not completely fleshed out. I wouldn't mind seeing a sequel were the "3D flip" was put to better use.

Thank you! it is good to see some sense like this on the internet.

How could you guys not love Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (SNES) the most?

It boogles my god-damned mind.

Maybe some of you are too young to appreciate what a ground-breaking game that was for its' time or just didn't get a chance to play it during the SNES days. Do yourself a favor...
Buy it on VC. What did you think I was going to say?
:lol

EDIT: Seriously SMRPG has more charm than any of these games put together! And I LOVED and played all of those titles. I guess there's no accounting for gaming taste, I think the root of the problem here is that Square made it so it is too Final Fantasy for them.

I played it several times back when it came out on the SNES, and I loved it.

Also, the first time I actually beat was, as I mentioned before, just recently. And you know what? It was on the VC.

There's no reason that SMRPG should be factually the best of the Mario RPG games. It established Mario in the world of RPGs, sure, but all of the successor RPG titles have taken certain ideas from SMRPG and have improved on them in substantial ways that people happen to appreciate.

Exactly why I liked this game, I didn't expect it to be so horrible in gameplay when I played it. You could litteraly kill a boss in 3 seconds by just getting stuck between their heads and the ceiling on purpose. The reason I ended up liking it, and prefering it over Superstar Saga was those very dialogues. They cracked me up over and over, especially when you play as Bowser. He's just too silly when he's not capturing the princess.

I really don't understand Paper Mario 64. My brother lent me a copy right after release, telling me how great the game was, however it may be the most singularly boring game I have ever played. All of the 'jokes' are kindergarten-level, and the gameplay is Baby's First RPG difficulty.

i don't hate it. it's a good game. it's just not what i want in a mario rpg at this point. i can entirely see how my list might be nearly completely flipped for some people. for me, though, it's pretty weak when you stack it up against how polished and well-written paper mario 2 is.

I've only really played SPM and SMRPG, liked SMRPG a whole lot especially the FF style boss fight, and I thought there were some very clever elements of SPM but I can see why people didn't like the game.
