Rayman Origins 2 confirmed through Ubisoft survey

No. NO!

3D models on 2D plane always look fucking awful. Why would they change this? The original was PERFECT.

I tend to agree, like with New Super Mario Bros, but this doesn't look bad. I think Donkey Kong Country Returns used this too and looks great.

It all depends if the developer takes the time and effort to make the models look less like a polygon model and more toon or cel shaded to be true to the characters.

DKCR had really well-animated 3D models on lush 3D backgrounds and it looked great. 3D character models on 2D backgrounds never, never look appealing to me. It's lazy and clashes far too much. There's a special place in hell for NSMB because not only did they resort to this, but the artwork itself was just fucking bland and awful.

The crisp 2D sprites with so much attention to animated detail in Origins 1 were so good. The MASSIVE hand-drawn bosses were awesome as well. I'm seriously going to miss them.

Oh hey, you like the side-scrolling Rayman 1? Awesome! There's going to be a sequel!
It's rendered in polygons
Oh, you're looking forward to Rayman 4?
It's a mini-game collection
Rayman Origins, right? That hand-drawn style! How about a sequel?
It's 2.5D.

THIS SERIES DAMMIT.

Great news and a beautiful fun game to have a sequel. I hope they don't surreptitiously try to use Rayman again as leverage to "blackmail" gamers that want Beyond good and Evil 2 from Ancel. Rayman and Ancel deserve better than that.

I really hope this is true. I loved Origins so much but never expected a sequel after reading about poor sales.

Please let this be true. That would be amazing news. Day one ofcourse.

So did anyone like this game for it's amazing platoforming? Anyone at all?

I imagine everyone here did? Just jumping around in the lobby section is fun. The fluid transitions between jumping, sliding, etc....sogood.gif

But it was also the best-looking 2d game ever, so this 2.5d thing is uh...questionable until we see some more info at E3 besides blurry screenshots

Am I the only one that doesn't think a new style is a bad thing? The first game looks nice, really nice, but I'd rather have a different good looking style than just more of the same.

I'll wait for some better quality screenshots or video before I judge it, but if the screens out now are any indication it does seems like it could look really nice.

Also, this.

Sweet Jesus yes. I might buy it day 1 this time. R:O kicks mega ass.

EDIT: Will wait on game play video to judge art style. Ubisoft has earned my good faith.

I did. The music and art helped the game stick out to people though. It's how I sold a lot of copies to people, by telling them it looked like a cartoon. Then they realized how much fun the game was.

I'll be happy with getting a Rayman Origins 2 and possibly a Sonic Generations 2. I love platformers.

Super hyped, the first game is amazing. Not sure why they would go with a slightly different style, though. The new, possible, locations sound great.

This better not affect development of BG&E2, though.

Do we think this will be full retail again or go digital like the first one was initially going to be?

I like how this 2.5D rumour is spreading like a disease based on some terrible screenshots that you can barely make out any details in. Rayman looks like the same sprite with slightly different shading to me, though I reckon that dragon is most likely a 3D model.

I'm guessing the first one was cheap to make. That plus giving Ubisoft another 85+ game on Metacritic probably put these wheels into motion.

The first game was brilliant, so this, obviously, is super welcome. Hope it doesn't distract from BG&E2, mind.

edit: oh I kinda already made this post, oh well

But I still agree with it!

This is video games, so I give this sequel post 10 out of 10.

The entire engine is built on easy manipulation of 2d sprites. 2d. You literally import image files. What this guy says:

"This oscar-worthy post pushes the envelope of how visceral a post can be. It will blow you away. 8.5" - IGN.com

Our frothing demand for this post increases. -IGN

I'm believe the first one was cheap to make. This, plus the 85+ score on Metacritic, probably put these wheels into motion.

The first game was good, so this, is super welcome. I wonder when, if ever, they'll return to BG&E2.
(As posts, no matter who's the user, are the same these days, just with a new ending)

I'm just saying, that's not the kind of shit to be spreading at a time like this

I was considering renting it, but then I realized if I want more of these kinds of games to be made, I have to put my money where my mouth it.

Don't regret a cent.

Rayman Origins was my GotY so naturally I'm excited it's getting a sequel, but the screens honestly looks like shit compared to the original. I'm kinda amazed it took people in this thread as long as it did to notice the polys. Even at a glance it looks farrrrrrrrrr less dynamic than Origins, which makes me paranoid the gameplay might follow suit. Rayman Origins was special because it was basically the first true retail 2D platformer in a decade that didn't cut corners. I should be pumped for a sequel, but something gives me the bad feeling that the talent behind the original has moved on and the follow up is going to be a pale imitation.

Here's hoping I'm wrong, of course.

i'm thinking ancel will be doing bge2 full-time while kinda helping out the ro2 team a bit, instead of being fully hands-on with it.

but whatever, more rayman is welcome. i have faith that a secondary team would be able to do it justice. i was one of the few who liked rayman 3, though.

Well, Ubisoft said the first one was profitable; so guess they're aiming to expand on to it.

"We believe Rayman: Origins, which is rated 89 percent on Metacritic with enthusiast reviews and is already profitable, has the capacity to become a long-term seller for the company."

2.5D ...don't mind, waiting on better pics and videos.

Hmm blurry screens and art style being thrown into question, this is like the second 2D platforming sequel this week to get this reaction, maybe this is how platformers will be announced from now on, giving blurry pics and throwing art direction fits!

Anyway i'm undeterred by the potential 2.5D for now, i'll wait until some clear images come through before beginning the worrying phase, and even then I don't think i'd be too fussed.

Well, people did say that a pure 2D game these days wasn't worth sixty dollars.

So it's in 3d, and will be sixty dollars. :V

edit: Probably not, this recent "change" in graphics is probably the result of a much smaller budget (and well, 3D might bring in more of the younger gamers.)
