Rayman Origins 2 confirmed through Ubisoft survey

The original was one of the most gorgeous looking games there is. Why mess with it? It's still great to have a sequel though.

i missed the first one when it launched. which platform should i get it on? i have 360/PS3/PC. i gotta get it now.
looks like amazon has the 360 version on sale. is that a good option?

Well, people did say that a pure 2D game these days wasn't worth sixty dollars.

So it's in 3d, and will be sixty dollars. :V

edit: Probably not, this recent "change" in graphics is probably the result of a much smaller budget (and well, 3D might bring in more of the younger gamers.)
Sad true.
Something similar was discussed in the New Super Mario Bros. 2 backlash reveal thread.

There are people; both in here and outside there that see 2D games as downgrade, not worth it, and just inferior games. Look at the many people that didn't felt the game was worth $60; maybe $15-$20. Why? Because "it looked like an XBLA game..wait, it was an XBLA game that was the changed to retail!!!". Ironically the game's longer and has more content and replayability than many $60 games out there.

That said, it wouldn't surprise me if this new one debuts at under $50.

Whaaa?

I promise you, 3d isn't cheaper. You draw up the art in any program you prefer (something that is done with every 3d model anyway, i.e. concept art), and then you import it into the engine. 3d isn't cheaper.

I got the 360 version and I never had a problem with the game.

I don't think the 2.5D will be that big of a determent to the game, as an earlier poster mentioned that Dragon, 3d or otherwise, still looks great.

Love how we were all using Origins 1 as the model for what NSMB2 should be graphically now they've succumbed to 2.5D too. :(

Anyone have the link to the original survey? I can download the video slideshow. Maybe the original video might be better quality than how it's shown in the webpage.

3D models due to lower budget makes absolutely no sense.
The whole point of the UBIArt engine is you just draw up some assets, and you can manipulate/animate them with ease. It just takes a few clicks to get a character set up once you have all the parts drawn.
With 3D modeling you have to draw the front and side views, create the model, rig the model, texture and light the model, and then finally animate it. It'd take more time and effort than the method they used to animate the last game.

I just hope they go in another direction with the music this time, closer to Rayman 2 then Origin's annoying score please. Still day 1.

I like how this 2.5D rumour is spreading like a disease based on some terrible screenshots that you can barely make out any details in. Rayman looks like the same sprite with slightly different shading to me, though I reckon that dragon is most likely a 3D model.

Why use logic when people on the Internet can squint at a couple shitty screengrabs and jump to wild conclusions?

Seriously people. Use your brains and chill out.

I think I just remembered why I hate you.

Kidding. I could go for a mix of both, and the setting change will probably mean a very different soundtrack. As long as it's straight quality throughout like Origins' score, I'm good with any style.

It's much, much easier to build a 3D model and manipulate it than redrawing the same object five, ten, or twenty times. Especially to the fidelity Rayman Origins had.

Why do you think budget CGI films have flooded the kid's market? Simple 3D is stupid easy these days.

I loved Rayman Origins' music. Some of it was an acquired taste, sure. And it isn't going to be to everyone's taste even if they've been exposed to it a number of times. But I certainly don't regret voting for it in my SotY post, even if I fought with my instincts to put Sonic Generations' soundtrack in the Top 3.

Will buy this, since the first was so enjoyable. <3

FUCK YES

Also Origins music is badass. I still hear the underwater music in my head all the time
I don't even know what they're saying, but I like singing along to it.

It makes me feel all happy inside.

WHOA, just caught this news. I was actually just playing Origins on my Vita right before I noticed this thread lol. I'll catch up with the deets in this thread but I'll be sorely disappointed if they ditch the amazing art style, but either way I'm psyched about this.

Exactly.

I'm sure plenty of people have seen this here before, but this is how you animate within the UbiArt Framework:

But that's not the way the engine works.

So there's really no need for the 3d models, is there? It goes completely against the framework they've built for the series.

Well, more reason to wait for some kind of trailer at the UbiSoft conference.

Yeah, some of that chipmunk shit was really bad. Especially some water stages. Unbearable

NO

edit: ^^^ NOPE.

Except that people seem to associate drawn 2D for one dollar iPad games or something, I guess.

Beats me, ask why people thought Rayman Origins wasn't worth $60 regardless of it's content when New Super Mario Brothers was a steal at $50.

edit: maybe it's easier/cheaper to just hire some 3d animators from china this time.

Hopefully the 3D will be like the 3D in Futurama, for example, where it still kind of looks animated.

Anyway I will get day one, first one was amazing.

Awesome news. I've loved what I've played of Origins, so I'm very happy that they're going to make another. I had kind of figured that the game had probably been a bomb and that Ubisoft wouldn't do another Rayman platformer for five or so years, so this is a very pleasant surprise.

Sooo... if they're going 2.5D, why does the survey specifically indicate "Beautiful 2D graphics" as one of the features returning in the sequel?

It sounds like this will be one of UbiSoft's best years. Assassin's Creed III, Far Cry 3, Rayman Origins 2, and for sales' sakes, the inevitable Just Dance 4...good year for them. Edit: Oh, and Future Soldier.

I wonder if the Dragons body is being manipulated in a similar way to the tentacle spike things in this treasure chase? leading to a "it has to be polygonal" response
Theres one early one that the way it moves looks super odd

Because that Dragon doesnt really look rendered all too different from the regular giant monsters in Rayman Origins.
