Rayman Origins preview and screens

Looks pretty great but I don't like the idea that a XBLA/PSN game gets turned into a full retail title. It better be somewhat long and packed with stuff now.

The original plan was that it was going to be an episodic title. The team then decided that they wanted to make a true sequel to Rayman rather than small episodes, so it ended up turning into a full retail title.

Such a gorgeous game, hopefully the rest of it will hold up as high as the visuals.

I'm sorry but after seeing those images I couldn't help it.

good that ubisoft gave ancel what he wanted. i guess after what happened to rayman 4 and beyond good & evil, they figured they owed him a couple.

and maybe this speaks to how the rest of the year looks for me, but this is easily my most anticipated game right now, especially since they dropped the episodic release idea.

As great as this all looks, I must say I have some serious reservations about making this a full retail title.

If it has the length to justify the price then there's nothing wrong with it. I just pray it's a success though. Michel Ancel needs to show Ubisoft that he can make money again.

And tears of joy at the preview and screens. One of my most anticipated games of the year now alongside Deus Ex 3 and Dark Souls

It sounds a lot like they started retooling this maybe halfway through last year, since that's when pretty much all the news about this stopped occuring. April it was mentioned as an episodic revamp, it missed its projected ship date of December, and now it's a full retail title. So I reckon they've been working on it for quite some time.

Jesus Christ that looks gorgeous. I just hope it animates better than it does in the gameplay videos available.

i think any retooling would have centered around the bridge(s) between episodes. instead of resetting the learning curve where a new episode would have started, it probably keeps ramping up.

all in all, it sounds like they'll have about 2.5 years of development time on the game. i think that's fairly healthy.

oof, the different art styles of the characters/enemies and backgrounds clashes quite jarringly in this screen. the other screens get away with it i think and the backgrounds do look lovely, i just hope it's not that common an occurence in motion.

also holy shit a video interview with ancel <3 <3

I just hope this game plays well single player, since changing to full retail release they gave it 4 player co-op, please don't ruin the single player element!

I like you, Michel, but your English is killing me :(.

Still not completely sold on the game, although co-op is a nice thing. Thank you, NSMB.

It's not too bad. He speaks it rather clearly and his only (slight) difficulty is when it comes to particular terms, but the context makes it very easy to pick up on what he's actually referring to.

That's the first Ubisoft-mandated Ancel interview in, what... 5 years?
You can read between the lines as to where this year long creative retreat stemmed from. He earned it, and the game looks all the better for it.

Looks absolutely amazing.

Day 1.

At 1080p/60, this is probably the most detailed 2D game ever released.

The dream of the 90s is alive in Rayman! Rayman! Rayman!

While I think it looks gorgeous, I still would have preferred a less "goofy" look to everything... But I'll still get this game, seriously multiplayer platformers are too fun to miss.

Yeah I did not think that was possible :P
Wario shake dimention has to take 2nd place now THIS IS THE BEST LOOKING 2D game this gen

You haven't played Muramasa?

On the subject of the original Rayman, is there a preferred version? It's the only major Ancel game I've never played.

The game was developed for Atari Jaguar. This is also supposed to be the best version, however I never played it myself.

Yes.

You are missing out on the best games this generation has put out by far.
Great!

I know, but I really love buying collections and I still don't like to have my games locked in a hardware.

As opposed to those DVDs that you slide into your tv and are automatically played on any device made from the time of their release onward toward infinity.

Its not bad at all, especially for someone who probably doesn't speak it every year like at a press conference unlike Yves who is fucking incomprehensible every year.

The interview was pretty fun all in all, and the new screens are fucking gorgeous.

Music in that version sucks, would not recommend.

Playing the MS-DOS, PS1, or Saturn version is fine.

I'm not keen on the idea of multiple planes (it sucks in LBP) and I think 2D platformers should try to stay as pure as possible from a gameplay standpoint, however it truly does look beautiful. Also seems like the kind of game where you literally can't wait to get to the next stage just to see what beauty it beholds!

I think that was just part of a demo displaying the UbiArt tech.
None of the screens or video suggest swapping planes, they all take place in the middle one.

I think given the way the UbiArt frame engine appears to work that the concept art might just be the background visuals as well.

Yup, the engine allows them to scan their drawings into the game and manipulate them as they see fit. Pretty great, and last time I checked they intended to release a public version of it.

The idea behind our animation system is to be able to animate any kind of image. The image may be a 3D rendering, an India ink drawing, a modelling clay background, an image drawn on a graphics tablet or a scanned image, and so on. In fact, any visual source can be used. We put the focus on freedom and simplicity, to make it easy to start a project and add content without much hassle.

Once the drawing is ready, an in-house tool lets us add the skeleton and determines which part of the drawing will move and how. Then all the animator has to do is design the animation poses, and the tool takes care of the image deformation.

If you have a PS3, the easiest way is to download the PSN/PS1 version. ;)
I must add it's a great game. One of my favorites 2D platformers. The art is still charming and the soundtrack from Stéphane Bellanger is superb.

Well, if you guys say so, I'll leave it at that then. I'm not a native speaker of English, I'm French, so I'm obviously biased. It's just that I don't really like literal translation in general and I don't like the French accent :p.
