Rayman's Ancel: 'I Don't Really Enjoy Playing Mario Games'

"I used to prefer Ghosts n' Goblins, Heart of Darkness, Another World -- games with a focus on the narrative side. Beyond that, I find Mario's controls very interesting, but I don'tbuy it. I can't help but seeing the ropes of the game, even if it works.

Well, Mario 3 is a play after all...

Ghosts n' Goblins had...narrative? What?

What fucking game did he play? Not even the spin-offs like Maximo or Demon's Crest have narrative..

If we're talking Mario fatigue here, I really hope they go for a different structure than the old 120 stars bit for the next major Mario game. It was probably tough at one point to imagine something different from the world maps from the 2-D games, and it's time to come up with something as radically different as what was introduced in Mario 64.

INB4 Ancel is a French douche. He's not. He's the man.

I don't like gliding, I don't like its inertia, and I don't like not being able to give some slaps!

Wait, the inertia? The Mario series is the pinnacle of inertia, control, and jumping physics. This man is factually wrong by disliking the inertia.

lol what?
He probably means that the mechanics of Mario games are apparent, and the use of narrative could mask the technical nature of the game, but a platformer with a storly is still a platformer.

Haven't they spruced it up with Galaxy 2 and 3D Land? They go far beyond the traditional Mario formula for completion.

I agree with you 100%.

I mean, I love Ancel, and I can't wait to play the new Rayman.. but Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2 and New Super Mario Bros. Wii.. these are like, some of the most finest crafted games this generation, pure awesome in disc form. If you're tired of playing Mario because it's still about saving the princess, you're doing it wrong. Very wrong.

But he downright worships Zelda. At least, that was the impression I got from BG&E.
Rayman could probably benefit from copying Mario, too.

Haven't played 3D Land and I really like the Galaxies, especially 2. And yeah it's a bit spruced up, but at it's core it is still the 120 stars formula. I'm ready for something a bit different.

Narrative is really important to him in his platformers, apparently. He has bad taste and that's fine. I respectfully mock his opinion.

Explains why Origins feels so "off" to me. I was really looking forward to the game, played the demo and decided it would make a better 20 dollar purchase down the road. With the recent onslaught of Nintendo platformers like NSMB, DKCR, and SM3DL, to me Rayman didn't feel how I would have liked it too. Game looks beautiful though.

Just focus on Beyond Good and Evil, Please. Ancel. Just make that game, forget saying stuff, just complete that game...

Much like Euro-shmups just have a "feeling" to them, there's something about Euro-platformers that feels off if you're really used to the Japanese variety.

Rayman Origins is a very good game so I don't really care if Michel Ancel likes to play Mario games or not.He still says that it's a great series, so I don't really see the problem

Rayman Origins has a story? Personality yes, but the game seems to have a Sonic the Hedgehog quality narrative (save these cute things from those bad things) at best.

from him?

even the worst marios are a bazillion times better than the shithouse Rayman franchise.

and I'm not even a nintendo fan.

That's just not true, Rayman 1 is a good game, Rayman 2 is great and Rayman Origins is one of the best game of the year.

It's not that it's not true. It's not fair.

What's the worst main-line Mario game? Sunshine?

Unfortunately, Sunshine is still better than the vast majority of games, including any Rayman game.

Sunshine is a 3D game a la Mario 64 so I'm not sure if you can compare it to RO, but I had more fun with RO than Sunshine in any case.

The worst recent 2D Mario is NSMB DS (it's still a good game) and I can safely say that Rayman Origins is better.

Quality wise, I'd say Rayman Origins is on par with 3D Land, which is also a great platformer.

Early Mario games played a major role in popularizing home console gaming because of their quality, and the core Mario games are still A+ titles.

If you don't like Mario you have a gaming disability.

There are haters for every game.

Just because you dont enjoy a game doesn't mean you are a hater.

exactly, it an other form of media people can dislike critically acclaimed works but in gaming saying anything against Mario (Nintendo products in general) is deemed sacrilegious. Just look what happened with people giving the new Zelda less then a 9, they were labeled as idiots, shock writers....

I haven't enjoyed the last 3 Mario console games and the new one does nothing for me. I'll probably be done with the series (main line Mario platformers) if the WiiU game is similar.

Sunshine isn't even better than the vast majority of platformers from that era. Its better than Rayman 3 though, but Rayman 3 is pretty average.
Rayman 2 > Sunshine

I do find it kind of funny that he prefers games with a narrative hook (which makes a whole lot of sense given most of his output), but Rayman Origins has about a barebones plot as Mario 3D Land.

Granted the first Galaxy and 3D Land have more narrative hooks than the average Mario game (its such a small thing but I greatly anticipated each new postcard in 3D land). I wonder what his thoughts are on those?

Couldn't agree more.

There's a reason why Mario sells, and Rayman doesn't.
And it's not because the oh-so idiotic masses have no taste.
