RE: Code Veronica: Which version is best?

I'm sort of on an RE kick at the moment and I've still never played this installment. I see there's a DC and a PS2 version- which one is better? I know the PS2 one has extra features but mostly I'm concerned with performance and stuff.

Also, are there any other ports that are significantly better than PS2 or DC? I have pretty much everything, so hardware's not a problem.
 
Try tracking down a copy of Code Veronica for the Gamecube. I believe it included the bonus content of the PS2 version but wasn't as jaggy.
 
Japanese only Code Veronica: Complete for the Dreamcast. Best performance and the extra content. If you don't like reading Japanese, then the American Gamecube version. All PAL versions run slower than their NTSC counterparts, so avoid them.
 
A few years ago, the differences between versions (that is, all versions with the new cutscenes) seemed pretty big, but today they're really aren't a big deal. The game's extremely similar on all platforms and any version's enjoyable. Go with PS2 or GC, whichever one. The NA Dreamcast version is out though, because it has no new cutscenes.

I dunno, I really disliked Code Veronica. It's the hardest of the classic REs and there are a number of points where you can just completely screw yourself.

Also, the Alexia thing is just crazy.

No you're not. For me when it comes to RE, it's the story and the memorable bosses that are most important. And at those Code Veronica beats RE4 (and most of the other RE games) by large margin if you ask me. Even though the gameplay of RE4 is a huge step forward.
 
I've had the DC version for, like, a million years. Played up to
getting into the mansion, I guess?
before getting stuck. That was years ago.

Last summer I played through the first three REs (only played 4 prior). I decided not to play CV due to being burned out, it being an outsourced game, and a friend of mine telling me it's the worst of the bunch.

So what's the word, GAF?

Can you confirm this? I saw the PS2 version recently and noticed quite a few textures looked worse (either lower res or heavy paletted), but I was never sure about which version was used to make the GC port since I never saw that one running.

No, really - he's insane. He probably just sucks at the game and never got past the prison with Claire. C:V has an intense story, the most fan service in the series, a great soundtrack and the beloved classic gameplay. What more could one want?
 
The Dreamcast version has a pretty hilarious beating of
Wesker
("WHOA! W-what.. Power!") that pretty much sullies whatever badass appeal the character had in the series..

But CVX still has more content to go around.

Edit: In terms of performance, between the PS2 CVX and DC CV, I didn't notice an overwhelming difference, especially in this day and age. Whether or not it was my individual systems or otherwise, load times were a hell of a lot less annoying in the PS2 version.
 
The GC game looks pretty much like the DC game, plus extra cutscenes; however, 2 discs. The PS2 game has that 1st-gen PS2 graphical jankiness about it (messy textures, muddy colours), but 1 DVD.

CODE Veronica was easily one of the best games in the series, you would notice that after playing all the games before it. It's the real RE3.

CV is my favorite of the series, but this might be because I bought the game on a whim and played it almost to completion. It was the first in the series (never played 3) that I was actually able to play for extended periods of time and nearly finish. I fucked myself over, though, right near the end, when you have to fight
Nemesis on the airplane and need to push him off through the drop bay
. The thing is, I think I had only like five shots in my Grenade Launcher and 10 shotgun rounds. It was impossible for me to beat him, and there was no way to fix it except to go back and start from the beginning (this game taught me the ever important lesson of multiple save files).

The game fucking rocks. That mansion scene on the second disc was a bitch, but so awesome.
 
I'm surprised that people think Code Veronica is the hardest of the old RE games. I beat it without using a strategy guide at all, but I never got through RE3 and could barely beat RE2 without help.
 
I only had the Dreamcast version until a couple months ago, when I got the PS2 version. It was so long ago since I played the DC one (for about a week when it came out on DC), I didn't really notice a visual/audio difference. I'm more used to the PS2 controls, so I'd say that one over the DC version. There were a few cutscenes added to the PS2 one, and I think that's it? So whichever one is cheaper should be okay. It's just as good as 1 and 2, to me.

I wonder if there are any difficulty differences. I got the "rocket launcher" in the DC version and tried on the PS2 one but stopped about halfway through on my attempt. I had a whole crapload of ammo in the PS2 one.
 
CODE: Veronica Complete (Dreamcast) is the definitive version of this game.

- Additional scenes
- VGA support (Monitor/480p with correct scaling box)
- VMU Support (Health at a glance)
- No slowdown during explosions

Definitely the best of the US released titles. But I'll take my 480p, VMU support and enjoy playing it on my CODE: Veronica Dreamcast. :P
 
RE:CV had the most memorable events in the series to me. Who can forget a crossdressing tyrant? RE4 had the best gameplay and feel, but RECV was just better paced, better written and better planned, IMO. If RECV had the same resources as RE4 had (Remake?) it would be up there with Zelda and the second Resident Evil as far as timeless classic Adventures.

CV is a great game and I thought so when I played through it on the Dreamcast, but it's probably my least favorite game in the (main) series. It's just the classic RE formula with better graphics and a plot that takes itself a bit too seriously.

I agree with this, especially the story/characters/bosses thing.

I mean, the Burnside thing might have been a little bit cheesy, but Claire Redfield is still the most sympathetic character in the franchise.

I agree with this entire post, especially with the soundtrack thing.

I used to LOVE booting this game up on DC, the title screen had this really good song with it that also showed clips from the game, sorta like a trailer (It was actually quite original, I don't see that in games or movies a lot). Actually, I even got the song track some time ago and still have it....:D

When you put it that way, you're right.

I think the DC controller is awful though. I found it difficult to use Wesker and his combat knife since the nature of the joystick made it easy for him to rotate. :/

I guess I'm a traditionalist, but I can't play any Biohazard title pre-BH4 on an analog stick. While I admit GCN's is beautiful and worth an exception, I still prefer the feel of Rebirth and Zero on HORI's SNES style GCN pad.
 
I'd go for the version with progressive/VGA support. That's the reason I played MGS2 on the Xbox rather than PS2.
 
While the Gamecube looks identical to the Dreamcast edition, the fmv seems to be encoded by the same idiot that encoded the video for RE 2 and 3 for the system, so it looks horrible, pirate vcd level horrible.

It is incredible that with an extra 1GB of space they didn't use any of it for high bitrate video.

I'm not sure if you can do it in all versions but on the Gamecube version using Action Replay you can play in a first person mode.

on that airplane.
 
The best version to find is the Dreamcast RE:CV Complete version which has all the extra cutscenes of RE:CV X but in their native form.

One of the most underrated RE's IMO. Much harder than 2 and 3 ever were. The game was more worthy of the '3' moniker than 'RE3' actually was.
