Reading stuff you wrote long ago is pretty surreal

Yesterday, I randomly remembered that I wrote a Harry Potter fan fiction 10 years ago. I decided to check Fanfiction.net and I see that it's still there - In all it's poorly written glory.

Reading through it was a surreal experience, Almost as if it had written by a different person entirely. After reading through it, I felt oddly proud of it all for some reason, despite the awful prose.

Have any similar experiences GAF?

No but i have that same feeling when looking at pictures of me when i was a kid.

Every time i just think "What the fuck was i thinking"

So you wrote My Immortal? Good to know...

I know exactly how you feel though, usually when reading through some old school papers

I read my journal from when I was about 10 a few months ago. It was not a pleasant experience and I ripped it apart afterwards.

A year ago I found a collection of poetry I wrote when I was in the 7th grade. Ghastly stuff, but it's surprisingly well-written. I'd stand by most of it today.

Yes, I have read some fiction I wrote about 10 years ago from time to time. It can be improved sure, but I feel pleasant that I'm reading them again.

I threw away a lot of my old journals, but even reading the stuff I wrote 5 years ago is pretty crazy. I was so different then.

Can't find my old fanfiction sadly. Would have made for a cringworthy trip down memory lane. I do have some old essays and short stories. Some of them are pretty decent, if I say so myself.

I do think doing all that stuff made me a much better writer. So I'm at least thankful for that.

I read through a story I wrote when I was 13 (now 31). That was some weird stuff to read now.

It was about a boy in the stone age who was sick of watching his sister get raped by their father and moved to live with wolves. It had explanations of generations of incest and was a weird story.

My teacher didn't believe I wrote it and I got an F. I took it up to the principal, but he didn't believe me either. After that I never wrote nothing in her class and just didn't care anymore. I took the tests well enough to get through them.

Once in a while I'll stumble upon a really old NeoGAF thread and BAM, there's 6-years younger me saying something brilliant. Feels good man.

I still have all the emails I've sent and received dating back to mid-1999 saved.

It's interesting to read back through them sometimes.

I'm the same way. Most of what I wrote is comedic so when I'm reading it I'm always cracking up like "how the hell did I think of this shit?"

It's mostly stuff I wrote 5+ years ago that I feel that way about though.

Unlike most everyone else though, I leave it all up on my own site and never take it down so it'll always be there as far as I'm concerned. It feels nice to be immortalized on the Internet or whatever I guess

I still have the same username that I made when I was a teenager..oh man those posts I see right now on PSO-world is cringeworthy. good times with my 56k

Reading through my essays from K-12 humor me to no end. Granted I wrote well for my age, but now, now it is just (agonizing &) hilarious looking back at them.

I would occasionally "cull" my bad writing every few years.

Which sucks, because there are literally hundreds of thousands of pages of stories I wrote between the ages of 3 and 21 that are gone forever and I wish I wasn't such a fucking emo defeatist.

i don't really have any old schoolwork but i find old forum posts i wrote odd to revisit. it's hard to imagine myself having written so many things. often i cringe but sometimes i'm impressed too - i think i was maybe smarter three or four years ago.

I've read an 8 year old forum post of mine a little while ago from some other gaming website. It was a review of Shadow of The Colossus. The staff made it the official review for the game back then. Was kinda weird reading it after all these years, but I'm still very proud of it.

Oh yeah, I also have all the papers I've written for school saved dating back to the start of my Master's program (2007), and a number of things through the course of my Bachelor's as well (which would date back to 2001).

I've been in college way too long.

After grad school, I can only do technical writing. I was reading some of my pre-grad school stuff and I was bloody eloquent.

This happens with resurrected threads on GAF. I read my post and not even realize it was mine...

I would love to read some of my older school work. I never wrote any stories though.

I can't remember what I wrote fanfiction under as a kid :( I know I wrote quite a bit of it, as well as giant group-contributed stories that were so terrible and plagiarized it may as well have been fanfiction.

Once every couple of years I come across college essays/writings and that's always weird as hell, too. Some of it I still think is pretty good, though.

Edit: Oh god I found my ffvii fic. Apparently I also started a DBZ fic about Pikkon, time travel, and seven generations of Vegeta-Briefs family line. Holy shit.
