Nope pretty sure my parents said something almost exactly like that to my face when I was a kid...

The point is that her circumstances are a little bit different from most kids who get bullied.

I'm not disagreeing here. The point I'm trying to make is that there is a longer history beyond this one story. That history suggests there's a good chance that its the parents' overreaction. Also, even if she IS being bullied more on average doesn't mean she isn't dealing with more bullying than the "class fat kid" gets at some random school x. I still think this is probably overblown. I'm sure she does get teased, but this girl can also talk to her friends about the time she spent with Katy Perry, was on TV, etc. Kids rarely have the attention span to torment someone for one thing for that long, also I seriously doubt the teachers would let it get THAT out of hand. They obviously have to be aware of the situation.

yeah she is getting a combination of bullying and kids being annoying as fuck. if people told me the same jokes everyday i would probably punch somebody in the face at some point.

I didn't know who this girl was until I watched that ABC special last night. That Friday song is TERRIBLE!

Her mom was on the show too, and she seemed like an idiot and she is the one that will be doing the home schooling. No chance in hell this girl gets a good education now.

Yeah, there's a good chance this story is overblown or that the parents overreacted, but who knows. Also, I don't think home schooling is the way to go.

Nightline did a report that was uploaded yesterday.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gg1AwB7sMo

Her mother spent $4000 for the song and the video.

Anyway, I think all the hate is wrong towards Rebecca Black. The hate should be directed to her parents and music producers as I don't understand why autotune was used unless they wanted to mask her vocals. Did no one question why it was required or that it made her voice sound terrible?

Auto tune can turn a non-singer into a lyrical one. See auto-tune-the-news: http://youtu.be/5fngEnIkz44 The Gregory brothers can make news casters and viral videos into singers.

Yes. Prosecuting him for a hate crime and blaming him for the suicide is insane. I don't want to start this argument here, but if you look up the topic at Above the Law I think there's a really good explanation of my view on the subject. The roommate was a dick, but that reaction is far too extreme.
Sorry.

If someone:

1. Illegally documents a very private moment (denying them civil rights, technically).
2. Airs that to the general public when that person may not want that information out there (that's why people do things in private or keeps something to themselves or to only a select few).

They should have every expectation to take responsibility to the victim's reaction to that. They were put in an unjust situation and in this case, the guy reacted to it be killing himself. That's solely on the bully since it more than likely would not have happened had the bully not put the roommate in that position. His actions were negligent at best, criminal at worse.

Often criminals do not take into full consideration the full range of effects of their actions. Hopefully the law makes the consequences of those effects clear.

Again, it is one thing to be expected to recover or "take" being made fun of on an isolated basis because your clothes clash or you have a bad hair day or something. It's another to be bullied by a wide swath of people on a non-stop basis everyday in and out of school. That is NOT normal and is generally NOT encountered as an adult when you're entering any work or social environment.

I feel sorry for the girl. All the bad parts of being a celebrity and none of the good (unless she's getting money from youtube ads?)

She has already appeared in many shows,
Hell even Lady Gaga tweeted about her just recently, I'm sure she will be fine

In the show last night Rebecca said she had a lot of money. More than enough to send herself to college.

I think this is a much better point. This whole ordeal will blow over and she will be better off for the rest of her life because of it. I actually think this girl will be fine as long as she doesn't become a real celebrity later in life. Though I do think keeping her in school would better prepare her for that.

It's funny because I'm sure most of GAF has been bullied once or twice in their lives during high school. But they'll also make fun of Rebecca's situation. lolz

Her parents should put her back in school. Bring a celebrity for a day (or an hour) if she needs to gain approval.

Tag fishing? Are you going to say something with shock value in every OT thread you can? Incest in the last thread, poo smearing, what else? It doesn't take talent.

I'm pretty sure that's all he's going to do.

So what's all the fuss about this girl anyway ?

Edit: just googled her, and OMG she's the girl from the meme and the gifs. Now I understand why they mock her at school

lol what? People that usually deserve to get made fun of in school are usually the ones dishing out the abuse. And that is what it is, abuse. They aren't doing it just for laughs. They do it to hurt other kids.

That comment I made was in reference to why the 2nd posters attempt at humor mostly flopped.

But what you say is true.... and it is sad.

What do people expect to happen to her? This girl is famous and you think kids are just going to continue ignoring her like they did before her video? It doesn't matter how old they are, that will never happen with human behavior. If you work in an office and eat baked beans for lunch everyday, people are going to refer to you as the baked bean guy and tease you about it. There's a fine line between friendly teasing and malicious bullying, but this is standard human behavior.

Are celebrities being "bullied" when they go to a supermarket and people refer to them as a famous character they played? This is ridiculous. You get famous, you gotta deal with the fame.

That sucks. Poor thing. She was just an awkward teen that made a shitty song. As hilariously bad as it was, she doesn't deserve to be tortured for it.

BTW- After seeing the girl she has developed into, I wish to console her. :)

The kids bullying her sucks, but at least she made some money off of this (and thankfully the law keeps her parents from spending it all on her)

The adults bullying her and mocking her is fucked up, regardless of how awful her performance is she is just a kid.

(Edit: And those saying bullying is a part of life, which it is, shit I got ripped on hard in school... by not actually dealing with it we end up with school shooters. Your mentality is wrong, get that straight. Being bullied destroys some people emotionally)

I actually feel bad for her...

I guess it's one thing to make fun of her online, but to keep it up in person makes me feel bad. She should sue the idiot that wrote the lyrics.

If she did that, then the bullies win.

So you pull the kid out of school!?! That's gonna set up a great emotional precedent! O no this makes me feel bad, quick withdraw from society! Her parents should be explaining to her how to deal with it and helping her move past it. Some kids don't do "sink or swim." I get that. It worked for me and some of my friends, but its not for everyone. But complete withdrawl from the situation is dumb.

I watched that program on ABC last night and Black seems like a nice enough person. I'd never heard the actual song before though, god it's awful. But death threats? Seriously? People are so messed up. Hey at least Urkel seems to be doing well for himself. Good on him.

She didn't mess with anyone she made a song.. if you didn't get that the first time she made a song, and she's being put down everywhere including death threats.... at school, online, kids, even adults, TV, radio... and SHE'S FOURTEEN! I knew a girl who got incessantly harassed by ONE bully in high school and it was enough to have her end up doing home schooling. Jesus Christ dude.

And you think that's a good example of the emotional fortitude required to get through life on your own? Really? If you've read the other stuff I've said you would know I've said they should shelter her from the outside shit, but school is different. You shouldn't pull a kid out of school for teasing, especially not what is described here. I really could only see it in extreme circumstances where it got physical and there was absolutely not possible intervention at the school. For fuck's sake have her teachers take a more active role or something, but don't pull her out.

I know people personally that had to change schools because of bullying. In the end they turned out better people after being surrounded by more friends. I think just having to put up with it is not the only answer. Why do women leave men in abusive relationships? Because it's not fucking good to be in that kind of shit! I know kids might not seem as "tough" these days but it's not always as easy to just say "man up", especially if you have NO friends.

In this case there is probably no place she can go. Who doesn't know who she is? Not so simple to start over.

edit : good thing is after the story she will probably get a lot of support.

Bullying will always be around and even though I dont approve of it in an extreme matter, I will say it is kind of necessary to prepare you for life's tougher moments. You eventually get over it, grow up a little and move on. Still, my heart goes for Black.

I dont post what you call "shock value" stuff in every thread and I admit to not have any talent whasoever. The people that made this thread amazing are the ones against the bullying, the gifs and that (if taken as a mean joke) magnificent first post.

YES! YES I DO !

ONE person can be enough to make a person have to LEAVE PERMANENTLY from a situation.
ONE person is enough to make someone leave a job, leave school, take a new route, etc etc..

This isn't a one off, it's happening CONSTANTLY REPEATEDLY BY COUNTLESS PEOPLE... you're not even talking about one nasty horrific bully, which by the way is enough to send shockwaves through a person.. you're talking about planet Earth with this girl!

Teachers taking on an active role? Do you know ANYTHING about bullying? That will just make the problem worse and more hidden!

And again, this is not one or two people, this is on a level that you or I cannot even begin to comprehend. Who the hell is going to stand up for her? And will it be anyone that CAN do anything for how she feels? Do you really not get this?

We're gonna have to agree to disagree here. I think at some point you need to teach your kid to take control of their own environment. There's nothing stopping this girl from improving her school environment. She can find supportive friends, start telling people to leave her alone, or flat out brush it off. Again I am talking solely about school. Despite what everyone here says this likely won't last forever and not EVERYONE knows about this girl. There are a number of people out there who have suffered through a period of bullying in their lives and come out saying they were stronger because of it. With proper parenting this girl could get through it without negative consequences. I'm not talking solely abou"toughening up" as everyone here seems to think. Put her in counseling, have her get involved in outside activities where people are supportive, etc. There are better solutions than pulling her out of school.

Rebecca Black's video was so bad it became very popular and she is making MONEY off of it so when she says she is called names in school then I don't care about it. You got money for your inferiority, you deserve the name calling. There are many hard working talented people who would beg for your celebrity status.

Yikes, is she even getting paid? Fame sucks, but usually you'd at least have the fortune to make up for it. Fame without fortune would be bleak as hell.

Now we're talking! In fact why stop there, I say we bully all 13 year old children just to keep them in line.
