Recomend me AMAZING animated films

Status
Not open for further replies.
I know theres practically a weekly anime recomendation thread, but my request is alittle different. I'm not interested in any series right now I only want movies. They can have sequels or maybe maybe be a mini series but no actual series, like no FMA, Avatar or Inuyasha for instance. Also it can be anime or western animated ( For instance I LOVED the Ultimate Avengers films and the just released Wonder Woman movie) but no disney stuff please.

No animated romance or comedy, looking for action or at least action centered.

Thanks in advance

I really don't like pimping DCAU as the only really worth-while US animation for some time, but Batman: Mask of the Phantasm is really good.

If you haven't seen Avatar, you're letting yourself miss out on a great show.

Well, it's impossible to go wrong with Hayao Miyazaki's movies; Castle of Cagliostro, Nausicaa, Laputa, Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Porco Rosso, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle and Ponyo. All range from good to masterpiece and many have some great action too (since that's what you were looking for).

And yeah, Les Triplettes de Belleville is a great movie like someone already mentioned.

aachi & sspika. It is not generally good movie (well if you are in right mood it's FUCKING BRILLIANT !) but it does have some amazing animation. The style will probably seem bit odd at first but believe me you will get used to it.

AMAZING. Even if you're not too familiar with Batman Beyond or didn't enjoy it, this is a great story about the future of the Batman universe. It's not kiddy, it's not safe, it's epic.

Really a must watch.

It's been mentioned a couple of time already in this thread, but I'll third a recommendation for Princess Mononoke. It's the only animated film I can think of at the moment that really fits your description of what you're looking for to a tee. If you haven't seen it before make sure to watch it.

It's been mentioned already, but it cannot be mentioned enough times in this thread:

Anything by Studio Ghibli is worth mentioning as well. I'll point out this one as it probably won't get recommended as much as some of the studio's other titles:

Oh, wait...you wanted action/adventure. Skip Whisper of the Heart, then. Check out this instead:

The Girl Who Leapt through Time is great. Another favorite is 5 Centimeters per Second:

Then there are the obvious recommendations:

Princess Monnoke
Spirited Away
The Incredibles
Wall-E
Ratatouille
Pinochhio
Tarzan
The Hunchback of the Notre Dame

IMO this is one of the best Disney animated movies ever: the animation is equisite, the songs are wonderful and surprisingly adult (just listen to Hellfire, a song about the temptations of the flesh). Plus the hero doesn't get the girl at the end, so it even has a bittersweet ending.

O wait, you don't want GREAT animated movies, you want animated ACTION movies... Hmm... In that case you can scrap all my suggestions and go for:

Appleseed
Ghost in the Shell
Ghost in the Shell: Innocence
Final Fantasy: Spirits Within
Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children

Yes I saw Mask of the Phantasm years ago, it it was great.

I'm in the minority but I saw WALLE and I thought it was meh. It was entertaining for one watch through but nothing amazing.

Disney does respectable work, but I've seen most of their stuff, and I'm tired of musical numbers, poltical correctness and watching PG cartoons.

Also just because I prefer violence in my animation doesnt mean I dont appreacite a good thoughtful story. It's just that to me it seems that cartoon is the perfect medium for large action set pieces since its far cheaper then staging a real battle in film not to mention limited only by the creativity of the artists as opposed by technology.
Telling me to watch Sprits within is just cruel.

That statement can only mean you've never seen the movie and are only damning it because popular opinion says it's a bad movie and you like to bleat just like the other sheep on the field. :lol :lol It's not a perfect movie, but it certainly isn't a bad movie. It has a lot of things going for it.

Edit: also recommended Persepolis but failed to notice you weren't interested in good comedy/drama type ones. I recommend looking into it one time--one of my favorites. This is a great action though:

Aachi and Ssipak

This is a great Korean film with stellar animation and insane story, that makes more sense than this Wikipedia synopsis lets on (don't feel like typing my own out):

Sometime in the future, mankind has depleted all energy and fuel sources, however they have somehow engineered a way to use human excrement as fuel. To reward production, the government hands out extremely addictive, popsicle-like "Juicybars", which in turn also act as a laxative. Aachi and Ssipak are street hoodlums who struggle to survive by trading black market Juicybars. Through a chain of events involving their porn-director acquaintance Jimmy the Freak, they meet wannabe-actress Beautiful, whose defecations are rewarded by exceptional quantities of Juicybars. For that reason, Beautiful is also wanted by the violent blue mutants known as the Diaper Gang (led by the Diaper King), the police (most notably the cyborg police officer Geko), and others.

See trailer the other poster provided above.

I have seen the spirits within. I saw it in theatres when it was first released as a matter of fact. It was terrible. The plot was competely nonsensical and the characters were all annoying. I will say it has great CGI and music and some pretty good set pieces. But as a film it was rubbish.

As an FYI to the Iron Giant lovers its apparently coming to watch now on July 3.

I've put pretty much everything recomended on my que. I'm surprised at how few films there were though. Are there really so few animated films from ANY country worth watching or did people just get bored of the thread.

I guess a lot of them have been mentioned already, but....I really think pretty much ALL Miyazaki Hayao films are worth seeing. My personal favorite is Princess Mononoke, but I don't think I can think of a bad one in the bunch.

Also, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. Has that not been mentioned yet?

Do they have to be feature length? I'm just going to go ahead and mention some UK animation. Check out anything you can by studio Aka. I'll list a few.

Jojo in the stars.

Thats the full 13 minute film. Really awesome. It is romantic I guess but with a really odd twist.

Paintballing

3 minutes of awesome action. Realy clever stuff.

I would advise anyone here to just go to the studio aka website and check out more of their work. Look at the trailers for Varmints and Lost and found. Both excellent films.

Their website is http://www.studioaka.com/

After going through this thread, I ordered The Iron Giant, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and Ratatouille - Haven't watched them yet but I'm really excited.

On a similar note, my favorite anime (in the small amount I have seen) is Chrono Crusade. Does anyone have a recommendation for anything like that? Action mixed with lots of emotional junk = win.

Hmm, quite few listed already.
Add:
Great Mouse Detective
Love the first two Fievel films.
Spirited Away is a must.

Cant believe Advent Children is in here. Its the complete symbol of what I find wrong with modern Square and reflection of gaming/movie industry as whole too since this is direction they are going.

Veidt

Blasphemer who refuses to accept bagged milk as his personal savior
Not released yet. But seems promising;

Watch out for FirstSquad
Set during the opening days of World War II on the Eastern Front. Its main cast are a group of Soviet teenagers with extraordinary abilities; the teenagers have been drafted to form a special unit to fight the invading German army.

FirstSquad5.jpg

They are opposed by a Schutzstaffel (SS) officer who is attempting to raise from the dead a supernatural army of crusaders from the 12th-century Order of the Sacred Cross and enlist them in the Nazi cause.

I personally can't wait to see it. It's gonna be the first Anime I have watched in years. And I recommend it to anyone interested.

Well, Laputa: Castle in the Sky for instance is a great mix of crazy old-school Miyazaki action sequences and more quiet and emotional moments here and there.

It may be over 20 years old but the chase on the railway bridge is still one of the best action scenes ever.

As far as Miyazaki movies go, Castle of Cagliostro is probably his most underrated film since it's not a Ghibli production.

It's his directorial debut but it still has all the typical Miyazaki elemets like the flying vehicles, great action scenes, light-hearted humor and the nice little reveal at the end.
