Recommend an awesome but short game (<5 hours)

To all you people saying EBA... Die! Just because you can beat it in 5 hours, doesn't mean everybody can! I'm going to go sulk.

Oh, I can't think of any games, the thread was just depressing me.

I picked up:

Max Payne
Max Payne 2
PoP: Sands of Time
XIII (I think it's longer)
Phantom Crash (ditto)
Forza Motorsport

for about $20 total.

Under 5 hours
1. Contra (XBLA and soon DS)
2. Sin and Punishment (N64 ?Wii VC?)
3. Ikaruga (GC)

All of them have excellent replay value. I can't tell you how many times I beat them. Gears of War falls in the same category, but it's probably between 10 - 15 hours the first play through. After that, probably between 8 - 10. Also give Gunstar Super Heroes for GBA a try. I don't know if you like racers or not, but it's a good genre for getting a quick fix of gaming here and there. DS ans GBA have a lot of games to pick from too.

Topic says it all. That's about as much time as I'm willing to spend with any game lately, anyway. For my purposes, I'd like suggestions for X360/BC or DS/GBA only. I don't mind if the topic gets derailed slightly for other consoles though.

well, clearly you've got your priorities set...

Just kidding. :) As for short games....I don't know many 5 hour ones.....however, many are 10 hours....

I'm willing to pay $60+ for a game I know I'll actually enjoy for 50 hours. In fact, I'm willing to pay $60+ for a game I know I'll actually enjoy for 5 hours, but that's another matter.

I said 5 hours for a reason. If there are only a few of them, all the better.

Well I guess it's getting derailed for other console very quickly, but the game that immediately springs to mind for me is Ico.
Do not listen to this man unless you like escorting the mentally challenged through slow, repetitive puzzles. Go with Sands of Time instead.

I've played most of the Nintendo canon. I was hoping someone would know of a third-party GBA gem that spends most of its time sitting neglected in the glass case at Gamecrazy, begging for someone to buy it and love it again.

Drill Dozer for gba... do it!

Decent game, I Gamefly'd it but didn't finish it before returning it.

I logged an hour and a half of Sands of Time before getting stuck. Very cool - I'll play it again tomorrow and see if I can wrap my head around that dungeon.

you could also just take a 20+ hour game and break it down into 4+ play sessions..

Then you could get ninja gaiden black, or metroid prime, or mgs3 or RE4, and you would be much happier.

5 hour games are generaly crappy games... making a game that short in this day and age is a signal that they didn't really care about the game.

A 5-hour game is still 4+ play sessions for me. I work 40 hours a week - the only time I play handhelds is on the 20-minute round trip bus ride, and my 360 has to fight for priority with everything else I have to take care of in an average week.

I've played all of those games. They made me no happier.

Pity. 5 hours used to be long for a game.

I'd move on to a few 8 hour games if I were you =) I also have found myself enjoying shorter game lately... Beyond Good & Evil comes to mind. There aren't too many real 5 hour games. 8 hour games seem to be the sweetspot for short games now.

That's true... and i think i understand your frustration, but these days, 5 hour games are usually not given the same level of polish that longer games have..

It seems ridiculous, because it would be faster to perfect a short game. But i think the consensus is that shorter games are not being bought by people who care about polish.

there are plenty of really good 8+ hour games though. So you could probably find something in the 8/10 hour range.

For myself, i don't really care about a game being too long because i don't buy many games and i don't mind playing them in small chunks over a lengthy period. I like long games better and if a game is too short, the price better be reflective of that.

Pirates! Is cheap, BC, and while not 5 hours long, you'll pretty much have done everything you can do in the game at that point. It's concentrated fun before it wears out its welcome though.

Pirates is one of those rare games that i played several times (and i'll probably play it again)

It doesn't take long to go through a lifetime, but it calls you back repeatedly and each game is a bit different.

But yeah... that was a really great game.

You're pretty much in the same boat I'm in then. Gears of War should be at the top of your list for 360 games.

I just beat Ninja Gaiden Black for the first time last month. It took me about 2 - 3 months to finally complete it.

If you want old school games like that that can be completed in one sitting, your best choices are DS and Wii. There are a ton of games that are already available that you could either complete in one sitting or are designed to be divided up into sections with the intention that long breaks may occur between play sessions. The reason I suggest Contra (almost any game in the series) Sin and Punishment and Ikaruga is because they can be completed in one sitting. I'm talking between 1 - 2 hours. The thing that makes them so great is that the levels are a blast and they make you want to comback for more and perfect it. They are the type of game that you will restart if you die before you get through the third level. They're just a blast to play. There are sure to be more games like it on Wii. It's only a matter of time before a light gun game comes out that falls in the same category. If you don't want games like that, I would also suggest any of the Castlevania games (GBA & DS) Metroid (GBA) and New Super Mario Bros. You probably won't beat them in less than 5 hours the first play through, but it's possible to that afterward. They are designed to be played in short sessions though. One last option is XBLA. I can't really comment because I haven't downloaded any of the games, but I imagine there are some games that sould be competed rather quickly on it.
