My rig is:

-A64 3200+
-2GB XMS Corsair
-9800pro

the game ran very well on medium/low settings, so I think I only need to upgrade the graphics card, I will buy a whole new PC at teh end of this year, so I don't want to waste lots of money on this, but again I want to enjoy the game as much as possible

so which is better ATi or nVidia? and which models?

your help is much appreciated :)

Are you sure you want to spend ~$100-150 if it already runs pretty well? Might as well buy your new system right now or wait until the end of the year before any upgrades.

I think you can get the Geforce 7800GS in AGP. It's a very good card and will run C&C3 well.

Yeah, thatÂ’s exactly the card I have and C&C 3 runs like a dream. Even Oblivion runs pretty well on high + HDR.

Adding to that, OP has a better CPU and more RAM than I have, so the performance increases should be even more meaningful.

7800GS is rather expensive for someone planning on upgrading later this year. Some 6800 model would be a better choice.

what's your PC specs? and on what settings you run the game? oh and how's the fps?

Maybe a 7600 or even 7300.

It really doesn't require much (C&C3).

AMD Athlon 2800+, 1GB of RAM.

For C&C 3 the demo automatically adjusted just about everything to high at the resolution of 1024x768. The AA was auto set to the first bar. I didn't check what the fps was, but I assume since that was the default settings for my system, and the game is capped at 30fps, that it would be a solid 30 fps throughout.

For Oblivion, I set HDR on, set most settings to High, the game ran fine (once again, did not check the fps), but did encounter some slow down if a lot of enemies were on screen at once and they were hurling magic around the place.

I use a 6600GT. I can put all the settings on max and still get a good framerate. However, if you want to play other games in the future, I'd go with a 7800GS.

EDIT: Actually, yeah that's a great deal for a 7600GT. Go with that.

If you upgrade your graphics card using AGP it will severely limit how good of a motherboard and (thereby limit the) processor you will be able to get later, most AGP motherboards are slow and only support old processor architectue

I agree with this man, but since you're getting a new PC at the end of the year you could always flog the old one on ebay if it's fully upgraded.
