Recommend me some PSOne classics that still hold up

Vagrant Story. Might want to pull up a FAQ though :).

Symphony of the Night probably holds up the best of all PS1 games though.

Add Alundra to this and you have some very sound advice. Symphony is IMO the best game on PS One and if you make it through Vagrant Story - which admittedly will take dedication - chances are you'll end up loving it.

The Legend of Dragoon is awesome! Aeana, ethelred and NichM say it's mediocre/awful so try to ignore their opinion on the game :D. No really, you should definitely give it a try if you like RPGs, I have no clue why some people seem to hate it. Loved the music, story was nice too and the gameplay (timed additions) was fun to get right.

Azure Dreams, a fun little anime styled rogue-like which many sadly overlooked.

Bleh, nevermind. I thought this was on PSN, aparently not.

I currently only have:

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Alundra
Vagrant Story

on my Vita, so, yeah, I recommend those.

Every gamer on earth who gives a fuck about himself should be able to say "I finished Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night". It's a game everybody should experience since it's Metroidvania perfected. I played the game 4 years ago for the first time, and boy: does it hold up well! Timeless classic.

Final Fantasies are really good as well, but maybe they feel slow to some people.

Xenogears - Yes, it has flaws, and some aspects of it haven't aged well, but it's absolutely fantastic. (Amazing story, lore and world, great soundtrack and atmosphere.) Definitely a JRPG that every JRPG fan should experience.

Also,

  • Tomba
  • FFVII through IX
  • FFTactics. (I'm not sure but PSP version might be superior; although that would require getting a PSP if it doesn't work on Vita)
  • Suikoden I and II
  • Lunar I and II

for an inexpensive and highly enjoyable Puzzle game experience, try Star Sweep

Anything 2D really. Alundra 1, Castlevania Chronicles, SotN.

Uh, I hated this entry in the Castlevania series. It feels wrong, I don't know if it's the graphics or what or how to explain it. It just seems generic beyond explanation.

A lot of the games in this thread really don't hold up or exist in a better iteration on another platform.

FFVII still holds up in my opinion. The battles are pretty easy and grinding isn't really necessary. Graphics still look decent enough (except for some cutscenes).

Suikoden 1, usually I don't replay JRPGs but for some reason i never get tired of playing this one. the fast battle system definitely helps.

Like what?
Are you asking which ones don't hold up or which ones exist elsewhere in a better format? Something like Resident Evil exists in superior iterations on Gamecube and Dreamcast, depending on your desired flavor. Same goes for something like Soul Reaver, why wouldn't you grab the Dreamcast version?

The Original Mode is pretty much the single best Castlevania game, as far as I'm concerned. The game isn't as good-looking as Rondo overall, but the stages are perfectly cruel.

edit: I would suggest not playing it on the Vita, though. Vita's current PS1 emulation and challenging 2D action games are a bad match.

Because you can't play that on the Vita?

You're discounting nostalgia as a reason to play original versions of games, not to mention portability. My Vita is better than a Dreamcast when it comes to lunch breaks at the office. The DC and GC ports of some of these games merely smoothed out the edges too, and PS3 owners can synch saves between their home and portable consoles too (which I'm doing with FF8).

We can cherry pick all we want, but some games here only exist on PSone or their ports are nearly identical. Resident Evil 2, Castlevania, Twisted Metal 2, FF7, 8, 9... and, as you can tell by the many people posting here, the Vita flatters those 32 bit classics on its screen.

There's no need to be hating on people playing awesome games on their Vita.

Money Idol Exchanger
Magical Drop F
Castlevania
Incredible Crisis
Intelligent Qube
Rival Schools
Street Fighter Alpha 3
Gaia Seed
Arc the Lad
Ghost in the Shell (doesn't look TOO bad)
Broken Sword
Megaman Legends
Dodonpachi
Sim CIty 2000
Elemental Gearbolt (if you have a gun and a CRT and an original PSone)
Grandia (random encounters aren't that bad IMO)
Harmful Park
Irritating Stick
Silhouette Mirage
Tekken 2 + Tekken 3 (may be slightly annoying)

how has nobody mentioned the best example?

CTR: Crash Team Racing

Best PS1 classic available for download. NO ONE DENIES THIS.

I remember really wanting to play this back in the day but then gamepro or somebody said it sucked and I was a stupid kid who didn't know better. Sucked having to pick out which game to get in the pre internet era.

My ps1 collection has been steadily getting bigger for years now. It's my favorite era of gaming by far. But there are so many they haven't put on PSN. They'll never even approach having them all, obviously, but there's a ton that should be up there.

Where's Rage Racer? Ace Combat 2/3? King's Field 1 and 2? Any of the Need For Speeds? Road Rash?
