Recommend some Metroidvania or Metroidvania-esque games this or last gen?

Fuck Guacamelee.
Fuck Ori.
Fuck even Axiom Verge.

La Mulana is where it's at.
That's the game of ALL TIME.

I did not, but I own a DS and 3DS so I'll check them out.

Seems like I might need to get into Steam games. Never took that route yet.

For the vania's, get:

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin
Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia

do NOT get Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate, it's garbage.

There's also Circle of the Moon, Harmony of Dissonance & Aria of Sorrow for the Game Boy Advance that you can play on the DS as it has the GBA port. I think some of the GBA ones may be available on the Wii U Virtual Console too.

Okay, this one is a bit more recent and probably higher profile but I haven't seen anyone talking about it so fuck you I'm talking about it.

Song of the Deep is about a little girl who has a sailor dad that tells her stories about his trips and the wonders of the ocean. Then one day he doesn't come back from a voyage so she builds a submarine (like you do) and goes off in search of him. Along the way she'll explore ancient sunken cities and find old scary technology as well as battle dangerous sea life and navigate twisting caverns and ship graveyards. All while being narrated by a lovely lass with one of those Irish or Welsh or whatever accents. Sue me, I'm bad with knowing where talkyboxes is from.

You'll upgrade your ship with a claw to grab stuff and fight things that wanna sting ya, in normal Metroidvania fashion, backtracking and unlocking new areas and new power-ups as you go and find your pa. Sometimes you buy stuff from an adorable hermit crab merchant! Sometimes a shark swims by in the background and distracts you from a nautilus that fucks your shit up. Sometimes the grabbing mechanic can get really fucking annoying. The game has a bit of jank to it and physics or animations might go weird, maybe the camera runs away to a corner of the map during a cutscene, seemed like they mighta rushed this out and cut corners on the testing.

But even with the issues it has and some frustrations it's a load of fun. It's by Insomniac who make good games and this is a good game. 15 bucks ain't too bad for it and it's a solid 7 or so so I enjoyed my time a ton with it.

If you noticed I might have a thing for the sea.

Now I have to crawl back to whatever hole I crawled out of so you guys can go ahead and name games without me and I'll come back later to yell at all of you and call you miscreants and charlatans.

This was on sale in the PSN flash sale the other day and I came close to picking it up but held off as some of the reviews mentioned it goes downhill half way with some annoying puzzles. Maybe pick up at next sale now as you got me hyped for it again.

I didn't like la mulana ex honestly.
I would suggest Unepic, it has some good humor and some neat little ideas, and if you don't fear a completely different take on the genre, totally pacific and focused on "exploration puzzles" based on player ability then try Knytt Underground that's still my favorite one.

For the vania's, get:

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin
Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia

do NOT get Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate, it's garbage.

LOL I forced myself to beat mirror of fate on PC. It's such an awful game. I should have just you tubed the ending

If you've nothing against old school games, you might want to try Odallus: The Dark Call. Everything feels like an NES game, from the pixels to the sounds to the gameplay (you will need to come back to earlier levels once you've beaten later bosses and grabbed new gear, there are tons of secrets to be found, etc.).

The somewhat Berserk-y universe might have something to do with why I liked this game, but even without that I found it pretty good and fun to play.

Salt and Sanctuary, great atmosphere, complex levels and even better combat system [if you're quick you can even parry arrows]

Yes! I will second this! This has been one of my favorite experiences in years besides the 3d souls games. This is my literal only platinum trophy since playstation started doing trophies. I'm like 2 or 3 away in bloodborne but hate those chalice dungeon defiled bosses!

Of note might not quite fit but loved adventures of pip and shovel knight and shantae.

Momodora: Reverie Under the Moonlight is one of my favorite Metroidvanias of all time. it has an awesome NG+ and other unlockables.

That looks great...I don't suppose the developers have had/said anything about any plans to bring it to other platforms?

[disclaimer: I ask only since I don't like gaming on pc where I can help it, as I spend all week working on a computer and/or laptop, I've developed a dislike for gaming on it, silly as it is.]

Chronicles of teddy
Toki tori 2
Treasure Adventure World
Enviromental Station Alpha
Fortune summoners
Valdis Story
Elliott Quest
Rex Rocket
Salt and Santuary
Momodora
Spud's quest
Bunny must die!
Mystick belle
La mulana
Full Bore

These two have levels but i think they could still be considered a metroidvania:

Odallus The Dark Call
Pharaoh Rebirth

I enjoyed the following games:

Guacamelee
Shadow Complex
Shantae and the Pirate's Curse
Outland
Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet
Ori and the Blind Forest
Song of the Deep
Dust: An Elysian Tale
Headlander (the best Double Fine game in years)

Just finished Sing of the Deep, was fairly enjoyable. Was a solid and charming game that wasn't overly difficul and had great at direction and music.

Another vote for Arkham City. The first Arkham game I played. I rented it and 20 hours in the game save corrupted - known bug. I liked it so much, I moved on to Asylum in the meantime. When the City GOTY released I bought it anyway, despite the bug not being patched. I had to risk it, because I liked the game so much.

Amazing game. And I really want them to make a Solomon Grundy poster, like the one you see in the abandoned underground station.
