Red Dead Redemption - 360 & PS3 comparison (Bish-approved!)

I love how this thread has in part become a place for PS3 owners to get constant reassurance and a group hug with constant variations of "The PS3 version is fine, still fun and playable, don't worry." Hasn't that been fucking obvious for days? I would hope at this point PS3 only people get the sense that "hey this game rocks, it's still worth getting." I always think it's weird that these threads which are intended for multi-console owners get invaded by single-console owners who shouldn't really give a shit about this.

I wanted to make sure it wasn't a disaster as certain factions on the internet appeared to be making out. Much as I should have ignored them.

Nothing weird at all if you consider the promotion material.

Like a AA PS3 meeting ;)

I played for a couple of hours today and I'm most impressed.
The rain effect looks crazy and you can see god rays after the rain is over and puddles of water every where, level of detail in this game is crazy and there is little pop in and frame rate has been solid so far, props to R*, I can't wait to see how next GTA looks like, most excited.

So the views of those playing the actual game don't matter? They just clog up this thread where you would like to release your inner fanboy?

Are there no websites that do sound comparisons? I always hear about PS3 games having better audio, but have never seen anything to back it up (not saying I don't believe them, but i'd like to hear the difference for myself).

Audio is very hard to compare, especially considering the various quality on sound systems around. People hearing lots of difference on sound systems for under lets say 300$ are just bullshitting. The sound itself gets "damaged" through bad quality systems before it even reaches your ears.

Sadly audio isn't really an important aspect for the majority of gamers (who are probably using TV speakers/cheap HTIBs). Theoretically all most games on PS3 should sound better than their 360 counterparts due to the lossless encode. This isn't a given and I'd say in most cases the difference is negligible. It also requires some decent hardware to be able to use it. I would say that the audio on PS3 exclusives has been sublime (Uncharted 2, GoW 3, Killzone 2) this gen.

Finally got the game together with Alan Wake. The weekend can come :D
Will post impressions of the 360 version. I heavily played GTAIV the last few days, so I can make some decent engine comparisons.

One friend just posted on facebook that he got the PS3 version (full of excitement!)
Then one of my 360 only friends comes along and rubs the platform differences in his face. Geez, I hate that shit.

Anyway, he calmed himself with the good old "box says 720p" argument :D

Digital Foundry includes audio comparisons in their features now ;)

I just don't think a vague statement like "The PS3 version is fine" with no comparison info doesn't really accomplish anything in a comparison thread. And lol at the inner fanboy comment, classic defense mechanism to attack anyone who dares to show interest in multi-console differences (no matter how small) that don't favor someone's console of choice. Hard as it is to believe, some of us don't give a shit which logo is on the machine that plays the game, just which machine has the better version.

Personally I don't care about any logo you favor, and I don't even care about this game. Its a comparison thread, you will find all sorts of comparison's in here, even GTA4. Stop trying to sensor the thread, it isn't your job.

So are you equally bothered by single console owners making lame jokes about the PS3 version? wtf.

indeed, the way people talk it sounds like the PS3 version is broken or something, so to hear a PS3 owner say 'it plays fine' helps re-assure those thinking of cancelling their orders...

I guess these threads are about reassuring PS3 owners* now?

There there, it'll be alright. At least Uncharted is still great!

Whether or not you agree with the reasoning for this sort of thread existing doesn't change that fact that it serves the most important purpose of all: keeping the official thread readable and on-topic without devolving into an especially stupid battle. And that should be enough for anyone.

U say that PS3 version is better?

Nope. The experts say that the 360 version is better. Whether it's a 100:95 difference or a 100:80 difference well that is pretty subjective and seeing as I don't really care either way I won't waste my time giving you my ratio.

Another thing that is pretty much irrefutable is that despite what some people would have you think there aren't only XDF in here. There are SDF as well.

Anyway, just stating the obvious again :D

P.S did anybody have to eat a bowl of crow over CheapyD's comment?

:lol

Have there been any non-Sony games to ship with uncompressed PCM?

Edit: Apparently Dirt and Oblivion had it, so some others probably have as well. But judging from the quality of this PS3 RDR port, I'd be surprised if they really took the time to include an uncompressed audio track along with the default lossy DD one.

Does RDR even output actual 7.1? Can anyone with the PS3 version say? And you have to actually listen to those speakers, because the PS3 will often output 7.1 but nothing will be coming out of the extra two speakers (and of course you have to make sure your reciever isn't matrixing the rear itself). I'm 99% sure GTAIV did not.

If RDR really does have lossless 7.1, that's a pretty big boon for the PS3 version over the 360 version for some audiophiles, especially in this game where the sound is so fantastic (hell, I love it on the 360 with just plain ol' DD.) But again, I really doubt it is, which makes me curious why people are saying the PS3 sound is better.

No, the ultra subjective, biased, propoganda style views of those playing the actual game don't matter.

Where are these people who keep saying that the PS3 version is busted? Could you quote some because (and I'll admit I skim some of the comments) I can't recall anyone saying that the game is "broken".

I'll quote them if you read my post first before asking the question next time ;)

no, it's about comments like "worst port ever" being put into perspective by "completely playable"

Wtf.....PS3 is faster? Is that from the xbox HDD or from dvd?

Loading from the dvd comparison is worthless.

I'd say that from the DVD - which isn't totally worthless, but it's a bit like a 3 horse race and only mentioning horse A was ahead of horse B.

I was talking to a PS3 owning friend yesterday about RDR and he was pissed because he heard about the differences between 360 and PS3. I was just shaking my head. Theres plenty of other games hes played where there were major differences but he never heard about them so he didn't care before.

PS3 has install too, I think, altho not that large.

The install is like 500 mb, just a small fraction of all the data on the blu ray.

The 360 copies ALL the data off the disc, so the game is pretty much running off the hard drive, while the PS3 is still using the blu ray heavily.

Ok, not completely worthless, but I want to see the 360 loading times at their best. Hard drive install is like, one of the best things about the 360.

I have both consoles and picked it up for the 360 due to the difference in resolution. It looks good--apparently better than the PS3 version--but some of you better temper your "superior version"comments. I've seen more than one instance of pop-up, slow-down (nothing terrible) and delays in drawing-in textures a la Mass Effect 1 (usually on cliff sides, just travel from the Ranch to Armadillo and you'll see it). The dull-headache I get after playing it for a while also tells me there is no v-sync and that the frame rate is jumping around some.

Good game, but far from a perfect performer. I'll probably get the PC version too (like I did for GTAIV) when it inevitably comes out.

Nice to see a game loading faster from Blu-Ray though , usually it's the other way around I believe !
A full install on HDD will probably speed up things , a feature I would like to have for the PS3 also now terabyte 2.5 " drives become affordable .

So we should add the install to hard disk time from the x360 version as well right? I mean that's how it goes around here. So get to it.

If you install the disc (which anyone with a X360 could do if they have a decently-sized USB storage device or HDD installed) in less than ten minutes, the loading is very freaking fast...much faster than from disc alone and faster than the PS3 from what I've seen.

lol, good point - there's several folk here who have it - get out the stop-watch! :D

I dunno, 10mins to instal, how many gaming sessions until you break even ;)

Yes, but they also said that they had the game installed to the hard drive and that might be contributing to the considerable difference in loading times.

goonergaz said:

You probably won't save 10 minutes in loading times over the course of the game, but that's not really the point.

goonergaz said:
depends what side of the fence you're on I guess ;)
If you can install, I don't see why you wouldn't. You don't have the disc spinning constantly for a start, which is what creates the most noise when gaming with the 360. I would rather do one 10 minute install at the beginning and have shorter loading times throughout, even if the total time saved is less than 10 minutes, because I'm not sitting in front of the console waiting when I'm doing the install, but I am when I'm waiting for levels to load.

goonergaz said:

Ha, but of course, the loading will be so much shorter that you'll never find yourself annoyed by its length when it occurs during the game. Can't say for certain, but I'm sure it helps a little with the occasional texture pop, too.

edit: and, yes, the disc spinning is gone post boot up.

I still haven't decided which version to get. But it has little to do with the resolution of the graphics, or a couple of bushes missing from the PS3 version, or other such inconsequential nonsense I care little about.

My problem is, I usually buy multi-console games on the PS3. Reason being, online play. I just don't pay for Live. Or pay for online gaming in general. (But that's a rant for another time.) So if I want to play online, PS3 version it is. Unfortunately, my PS3 runs loud as shit. Louder than my 360. Probably about the same as a 360 spinning an uninstalled game. And it drives me nuts. So if I want to play the game without listening to a constantly whirring fan, the 360 version is the way to go. But then I can't check the game out online. But then again, I rarely play games online anyway.

Blargh!

this is your pre-YLOD warning message - backup all you data and migrate to a slim ASAP!

nah.
My 40gb model has been loud as shit since day one, I'm 2 years in already and it's still working fine, albeit loud as shit, much louder than the 360 with DVD running full throttle.

I noticed that RDR (PS3) loads much, much faster than GTA4 (PS3) and that made me very happy.

Load times are fine. But why no optional large install, like a 3GB file? I think R* did as little as humanly possible on the technical side. They slapped RDR assets in the GTA4 engine and called it a day.
