I might be the minority on this but I can't help but having to write this topic and just say how god damn awesome RockStar San Diego was with their use of audio design in that game. I mean for just example, how the music kicks in dynamically during certain situations created from the player (say going to Blackwater and causing mayhem and then this fucking godly piece of music kicks in and alters from the situation you've got into yourself, or how just strolling within the lands and just hearing the ambiance slowly whistling through the speakers) is still some of the most memorable things about this game even now. I couldn't help making this topic once the music started flowing in. I think apart from Mass Effect 1, I can't think of a better satisfying conclusion with its music in a credits ever done, even all the way with this generation I can't remember much of anything else.

God damn I love this game so much <3

RDR is one of the best games ever made, visuals are AMAZING, world is awesome, can't wait for a next gen sequel in the same universe

I wish I coukd replay this gem but I no longer own a console.

I still believe that a PC version will happen eventually. The rumour that R* passed on the PC because RAGE needed to be butchered in order for the game to run acceptably on the PS360 has always seemed incredibly dubious to me considering the engine was built specifically to facilitate then-next-gen development. Demand for a PC version just increases as time goes on and I strongly doubt the higher-ups at R* and Take-Two haven't taken notice, especially with the success of belated PC ports over the past couple of years, beginning with Alan Wake.

RDR had one of the best audio mixes last gen. Much better than what GTA ever got. I'll never under how far backwards they went from RDR in GTA5 when it came to the sound of the guns.

There's a lot more effects happening at once in GTA5 than RDR. But regardless, the sound is amazing in RDR and in majority of Rstar games. Max Payne is another gem from them
in the audio department.

One of the best games (and soundtacks) ever, the soundtrack is never off my phone / playlist.

4 year old port? Ehh I doubt it

You are good people. The entire package was a beautifully crafted love letter to Westerns.

The MP is better than GTAV's which is pretty telling.

There's less happening in Max Payne 3 than RDR and RDR is still better. It has the best sound of any Rockstar game by a decent margin.

Yep the ambience as well is amazing if you have a surround sound setup. The world is amazing. The first time you hear a storm approaching with the low rumble of thunder. :D

You get the same feeling when you're in the wilderness in GTAV.

I was on that all the time. Have to force myself to play GTA Online, telling myself "it will get better, it will get better." It's hard to play for more than 45 minutes.

Yeah GTA5 was much busier sounding than RDR since half the game was set in a sparse desert but the mix and the sound samples themselves were a lot better. Even Max Payne's weapons sounded lacklustre compared to RDR.

Could be, after all they're still porting their old games to iOS and Android.

However we haven't even got a word for GTAV, let alone RDR.

On topic: RDR and Max Payne both had AMAZING soundtracks, and made a great use of them to boot.

GTAV also had a comparably fantastic soundtrack, maybe even better, but you could barely fucking get to listen to it, since it kicked in sporadically and you died in two shots.
This thing makes me bitter, because it was my first thread on GAF and i still hold that grudge against GTA's radio system, yeah it was cool back in the day, but now you are just stuck listening 99% of songs you don't like, hoping for that one tune that could maybe fit the situation, while you could have one of the best soundtracks ever written for a videogame to pump you in your escape (fukken Tangerine Dream, FFS).

Listen to this fucking shit:

nghh this is Hotline Miami level of goodness, and is hidden for you to barely listen to it.

yeah its great!

I hope so too.

Word. The GTAV score was incredible, and what little you got to hear of it in the game ("little" relative to how much music there is, especially with the stem system) was disappointing. This score alone made me wish they dropped all the goofy nonsense and made a straight up crime-drama game to take more advantage of the music. The mixing on the music was also too low. You had to push effect and dialogue levels down a few notches to really get the right level. There's so much great tension building, chase, and shootout stuff on there.

That is not true. Did anyone care when they released Halo 2 on PC?

If they do make a PC version please let me skip the skinning cutscenes!

There was a way to skip them with a glitch. I think if your horse was too close or something like that, you could bypass the skinning animation and still get the loot. I don't remember, been too long.

Paradoxically, the moment i got to enjoy the soundtrack the most were the installation process (yeah) and the very starting mission in North Yankton, because they're very clear there.
The ambient music during the installation set up all kinds of false expectations in me. :/

I might agree, but the utterly stupid decision to place you on a strange horse when first in Mexico, and tie the music playing to being on that horse, so that when you naturally whistle for your own horse that most awesome of moments is ended, means I cannot.

Yeah, agree with all of this.

Man, North Yankton memories is so good, top.

Also liked the music
when you go back to NYankton
, don't remember the name though.

Tangerine Dream 100%, it sounds straight out of Thief.

that music is called No happy endings

I think i've subscribed to a multitude of channels because of rockstar's soundtracks. Such a fanboy.

It also makes me think whoever will do the soundtrack for Agent, if the game ever comes out. I mean, tangerine dream is a great fit for that, and they seemed reluctant to score a game until they saw GTA V. Woody Jackson is practically their main composer right now. we also have craig conner (music supervisor and composer of a lot of tracks from gta 1 & 2 and the marvelous manhunt 1 soundtrack).

I was talking about RDR in particular. The three other people who responded to my post seemed to pick up on the context just fine. ;) To address Halo 2, though, nonetheless: I think you'll be in for a surprise if/when it's released on Steam minus GFWL and plus Steamworks.

Truly incredible game, audio design was top-notch.

I always hated the eerie music that plays in Tall Trees and the Great Plains though, I'm still not sure why they chose such a weird vibe for that area.

Because packs of infinite stealthy killer bears are creepy as fuck.

The great Bear Genocide of 1911.

For me the biggest flaw in the game: the insane spawn rates of bears and cougars in Tall Trees. Absolutely crazy.

This thread makes me want to replay RDR haha, John Marston is so cool.

Conker's Bad Fur Day has the best dynamic audio to me, followed by RDR. The crossovers are nice from stage to stage. And on top of that, Conkers would whistle the theme music random. They really maxed out what the N64 was capable of.

West Elizabeth in general always represented the death of the wild west in general, with modern technology, more railways and in general the abandonment of the cowboy mythos. Tall Trees is a place full of dangerous beasts and ultimately, dutch's and the natives hideout. So the vibe of something always creeping in, something not feeling right, was extremely fitting for the area for me. Both in the narrative sense (death of wild west) and gameplay wise (dangerous beasts lurking in the forest)

Well if there's one area in which i have complete trust in R*, is soundtracks.

I mean Max Payne 3 had one of the best OSTs i've heard in a game, i think i even placed it above Hotline Miami's in the 2012 SOTY thread...

Dat Panama music:

Dat Combat Drugs:
http://youtu.be/RXuP0hRJMm0

Dat Finale piece:

So yeah, i trust them pretty strongly as of now, on that front.

Don't forget bully soundtrack , manhunt soundtrack, every gta theme, l.a noire soundtrack, etc etc

RDR 2 would we one of the few things that, if good, would make me instantly start saving for a PS4. The game was so incredible it made me really hyped for GTA V...but personally it was nowhere near the fantastic RDR for me. Especially disappointing since apparently the same person was in charge of both scripts?

The soundtrack was just the best. It made shootouts so exciting....as well as just exploring the environment. Really nailed the Western vibe. Still haven't heard a song used as well as "Far Away" when entering Mexico for the first time 2/3 years since.

Easily on of the best games ever, and far surpasses anything else that has been released under the Rockstar banner as well.

That makes sense. Still makes it my least favourite area though haha, constantly on edge because it felt like I could get jumped by a ninja bear at any time. But I suppose the music fits the theme nicely.

Man the first few hours of this game are so good. The trainride to Armadillo, the horseride up to Fort Mercer. Getting gunned down, patched up by Bonnie McFarlane [one of the best characters in any videogame], spending time doing casual ranching stuff.

Such a breathe of fresh air.
