An Australian man has taken himself to hospital after a venomous redback spider bit him on the penis.

The tradesman was using a portable toilet on a Sydney building site on Wednesday morning when he was bitten.

A spokesperson for St George Hospital confirmed that a 21-year-old man was treated for a redback bite.

The redback spider, closely related to the black widow spider, is distinguished by a long red stripe on its abdomen.

The spider's bite causes severe pain, sweating and nausea.

The BBC spoke to the owners of the property who confirmed that the man had been bitten on the penis as described in media reports.

He was later discharged from hospital in a stable condition.

Although there are recorded cases of deaths from redback bites, none have occurred since the development of antivenom in 1956.

I'm trying to get my head around the logistics of the spider biting his cock.

Was he sitting on the toilet and the spider crawled from under the seat?, or was he at a urinal and the spider saw his cock and thought, I am having that.

I remember going to Smoky Cape lighthouse in Hat Head NP in NSW last year and walking through a huge web that had the biggest orb weaver in it I've ever seen, it dropped onto my shoulder and I freaked out.
 
Don't these bites generally cause extensive tissue damage even when treated? I hope not for this man and since he's been discharged I'm going to assume this isn't the case.
 
Better than being bitten by a White Tip. I have seen many of them around where I live (NSW) and their bite can cause necrosis. Thats not what you want on your dick.

Kinda weird that he didn't get ambushed by a group of drop bears on the way to the hospital tho.

I'm not sure, either. It was in a porta-potty. If the dude was sitting with his drawers down, the spider may have fell/crawled into his clothing, and then bit him after he pulled them back up.
 
TIL I learned that the feeling I will have when reading a news story about a guy whose penis was bitten by an extremely venomous spider, only to realize there are no pics, is... Disappointment?
 
Using a portable toilet is dangerous, he knew what to expect. If spiders don't kill you, some germs there will.
