Reddit: Tell us a deep dark secret about the industry you work for

I work in hotels. NEVER BOOK THROUGH A THIRD PARTY (Expedia, Hotels.com, Priceline, Orbitz, etc.). Hotels overbook all the time, and your reservation is the first to go in a "sold out" situation. Third parties guarantee you a room, but not necessarily the room you booked or even a room at the hotel. We can "walk" you to another hotel that has vacancy. Third party requests are also not something we have to honor or even try to honor. Your best bet is calling the hotel directly and asking for availability/rates. Often times, if you find a "better rate" on a third party site, ask if the hotel can match that. Saves us and you money

this one happened to me after 9 hours in the air ... At midnight. I was SO fucking pissed at Priceline.

Lots of shitty stuff here. =/

If anyone else works at Hasbro they should go dish the details on the lost, mysterious Jurassic Park line of 2009-2012.

The funeral stuff has been that way for decades. Jessica Mitford wrote a classic muckraking book about it in the 60s, called The American Way of Death.

None of it is really that surprising and surely some of it isn't even true.
Such is life. Interesting read regardless.

So many disgusting stories to tell.

Bollywood and India in general is such hypocritical place. They normally don't show sex scenes in their movies yet the director bangs the actors left to right.

Fuck the movie industry.

This isn't as salacious as some of these posts, but I must say that payola is alive and well in radio. Half of what you hear on the radio is a result of market research while the other half is music being pushed by the companies.

"The only sure things in life are death and taxes [and someone always willing to rip-off the vulnerable]"
uuughgh...
This is why my business is getting out of doing headstones. We don't want anything to do with the kinds of prices you have to charge a customer in order to provide a headstone that meets the average cemetery's requirements. I can do a 6'x4' stone subdivision sign for cheaper than I can do an 18"x32" headstone a lot of the time.

Really? Seems to me it's either pay a lot of money to get teenager girls raped, or pay less money and support low wages and child labor . I'm not seeing any other choices, so I'll go with the child labor.

You can find ethically made clothing but you are going to have to pay for it. Off the top of my head recent things (and prices) I've replaced in my wardrobe to try and get better made/1st world made:

Red Wing Boots -- ~$300 (USA)
Samurai Jeans -- ~$300 (Japan)
Flat Head Flannel -- ~$200 (Japan)
Strike Gold Hoodie -- ~$185 (Japan)

These are just some of most recent ones. In general what you'll be looking for are items that are either made in Japan or made in America. Occasionally you can find garments made in Italy but those are usually overpriced for the quality. It is also best if you can figure out where the company gets their materials from to production. Like I have absolutely no idea where the leather for my red wing boots comes from but I think Red Wing probably finds decent leather. My Samurai Jeans I know the denim is spun in Japan and I forget exactly where the cotton is sourced. I believe in Africa. My Flat Head flannel is spun in Japan and made in Japan. Again not sure on where the cotton is produced. My Strike Gold hoodie is made in Japan and spun in Japan. Again not sure on the cotton origin.

The downside is some stuff made in the first world is hard to justify the prices. $40-$60 for a pair of underwear, $30 for a pair of socks, $60-$80 for a tshirt. I mean I am doing my best but I'm not made of pure gold. Not to mention the above stuff I bought because the quality of off the charts and will last for years. It is a really hard thing to do and someone even wrote a book about trying to live only on "Made in America" and it is nearly impossible these days. With globalization it is hard to tell if the item you're buying is 100% ethically produced or not. So you can either accept the price is too high for you to pay (which is 100% a valid opinion, imo) or try and do what you can. But trying to get on a high horse about buying stuff from Wal*Mart as a stance against American Apparel isn't a very strong leg to stand on.

Very, very, very interesting read. This thread validates my lifestyle decisions and furthermore, validates my outlook on everything.

Ok, example from injury law:

We had a client, bad head on collision with another driver on a country road. Both of them in terrible condition, both airlifted to the E.R. The other driver was in a coma for a couple weeks. Our client ended up with over $300K in medical bills, the other guy certainly had at least as much.

Both drivers' insurance denied liability, the skid marks supported our client's story. The other guy had an implausible story about our client swerving all over the road. The insurance companies agreed to hold off on a decision until toxicology reports from the date of accident came in.

Well, our guy's E.R. records came in, turns out he was high on meth at the time, means that he probably actually was erratically swerving. What was our solution? We had someone carefully white out the positive drug results before sending the records over. The insurance companies reviewed, said that he was clean and settled in our client's favor.

Worst part is that the other guy, equally or more fucked up, got no settlement and is on the hook for his hundreds of thousands of medical bills.

Why would you be complicit in something like that? Why are you still there?

I worked at a Dominos for over two years in Iowa City, when I was in college, and my experience was the same. No one there would ever consider fucking with the food. Say what you will about the food quality in general, it was a well run place. (That goes for my experience at Arby's as well, they did a good job with food standards. The Hardees....not so much.)

This was my experience the 3 years (2009-2012) I worked at Pizza Hut in Austin. Nobody fucked with the food, the most unsavory thing was sometimes when the dining room was super busy and we were out of plates / silverware, we would rinse stuff off in the sink with hot water but not run it through the dish washer. Definitely no pubes in the sauce, that I ever saw at least, and half the employees (including myself) were college students.

That's fucked up man. No way I would work there after that. That poor guy gets screwed over for no reason. If this is actually true you should do something about it.

This sounds like something you should bring to the police.

Holy shit. As a decent human being you have an obligation to report this. Someone's life is ruined and it literally is your fault.

Your user name makes this story even more annoying to read.

Snowden's secret indeed. Jeez dude, that is beyond messed up.

See, I've already looked into it, it's not illegal. There's no obligation to share accurate or complete evidence until suit is filed and discovery, and certified records are requested.

But even if it's "legal" it's certainly unethical, right?

I only know of this like third hand or else I'd have contacted the other guy already (I don't have access to the files).

This is one the most disgusting things Ive read on GAF. His life is potentially ruined because of the cunts you work with.

I want to know more. What was the police report for one? I reckon the police report may have had something to do with the insurance. I'm curious to know more because I think medical malpractice is an abused system.

That and Im baffled by the whiteout toxicology report. How is that not sent by both parties? I would imagine multiple parties would request it from its source. So fucked up if the coma guy wasnt at fault and you screw him over for a measly percentage of the payout.

I've worked in social marketing before and can verify that it's almost entirely made up of Twitter,Facebook and Forum blasts. I did it as a secondary role to my primary job but we had employed a company to do this for us. Honestly the difference between a company and black hats in this situation is one is established and the other is a dude in his basement.

When people freaked over the MS Xbone astroturfing rumour it made me laugh a bit. You best believe that alot of the positive info you see about any big title is paid for SEO and Marketing by either the companies themselves or third party companies who specialize in this.

So there really is viralling on 4chan...

People are horrible. My question is where the hell are all the whistle-blowers? Are people that spineless? You can bet your ass that if I was privy to this kind of shit I'd spend plenty of time gathering evidence before turning it over anonymously to the press and/or FBI.

You have no idea.

In some states, you are legally obligated to carry "no fault" insurance on your auto policy. No fault insurance will pay your medical bills in case of an accident, up to the state mandated minimum,
no matter who was at fault.

The original intent of the law was so that everyone could get bills paid/not go to collections early in a case, while liability is being disputed.

What it did in practice is give any collision, no matter how minor (and we're talking love taps level of minor) a minimum dollar value (in terms of medical bills). So let's say your state has $5000 no fault minimums (like Florida), then any accident is guaranteed to pay at least that much. So chiropractors sprang up everywhere because they can treat patients for at least $5k no matter what. And since soft tissue injuries can't be proven or disproven through diagnostics, an insurance company can't say that someone wasn't injured.

In an injury case, medical records are your evidence. The problem is that the medical providers (chiropractors) have every incentive in the world to treat every patient to at least the minimum no fault limits, no matter how injured. In Florida it's so bad that chiros will pay people to get in accidents and then treat with them. The patients get a couple hundred dollars, some free massages, and pain medications, the chiros get five grand in insurance money, and attorneys get clients with medical bills.

In states with no fault insurance, your no fault coverage is usually about half of your yearly premium, because someone has to pay for this.

Next time you are in Florida, notice how many ads for injury attorneys you see.

That's not exactly a deep dark secret, or even that surprising. I'd rather that than the meat go to waste. Pretty sure that's what a lot of restaurants/diners do as well.

As do grocery chains. The ingredients used in any deli, salad bar or hot food offerings are almost certainly those about to be binned anyway. Cuts down on tons and tons of waste. Still wouldn't eat the egg salad sandwich from there though.

The same is largely true for product reviews on Amazon / restaurant reviews on Yelp.

A good amount of reviews / commentary on the internet is faked or paid for. Hell, there have even been paid shills on GAF.

A talk was posted on TED recently about this issue: Margaret Heffernan: The dangers of "willful blindness" #TED : http://on.ted.com/rMos

It's definitely worth checking out.

Because of HIPAA, only parties authorized by the patient can obtain medical records from a medical provider. The insurance companies can only get records through a client's attorney because of this.

Seems legit to me. I remember being an innocent kid, assuming the best of people. Those days are long gone.

What's the Dan Schneider stuff? Always knew he was a creep considering the kind of stuff I've seen gif'd here on Gaf from his shows.

Right now – literally right now, August 16, 2013 – the FTC is reviewing a merger between the two largest funeral service corporations in the United States: Stewart and SCI. Stewart has 500-ish locations while SCI has 2000+. This will create a mega-Decepticon-conglomerate that will control at least 40% of all funeral service business transactions in this country – and that, my friends, is what antitrust regulations refer to as a monopoly. We are racing full speed ahead to the genesis of the McFuneralHome and nobody is doing anything about it. The reason? Misdirection. There’s no Stewart Funeral Home or SCI Mortuary in your hometown. They’re operating under the same names they always have, letting you believe that the good people of Bubba & Sons Memorial Chapels would never steer you wrong. Bubba’s been around for 50 years! Bubba’s handled your family’s funerals for generations! Let me tell you something: Bubba cashed out years ago and is pretty much a figurehead at this point. Check his website carefully: at the bottom, you’ll probably see a copyright for either “Dignity Memorials” (SCI) or “STEI” (Stewart).

Holy fuck so Six Feet Under was right on...that's so crazy to me.

Cremation, I'm in.

What's the Dan Schneider stuff? Always knew he was a creep considering the kind of stuff I've seen gif'd here on Gaf from his shows.

You see every single female lead/co-star on his show?

Word is he deflowerered ALL of them and even got Amanda Bynes pregnant and he paid for her abortion.

And there's also the fact that some believe he's the father of Jamie Lynn Spears daughter.
