Here's the video.

As much as I hate to make another thread about the new Ghostbusters reboot, I thought this was a pretty interesting video that was worth sharing. Gleaned a couple of facts from this that took me by surprise.

Slime me if old.

So, what happened to Leslie Jones was a lying narrative put forth by Sony execs to garner sympathy for their mediocre movie?

This might actually be worse than AVGN's arms-crossing tantrum.

I watched this video earlier today, so excuse me if my memory is a little foggy, but I don't think they said that, did they?

EDIT: Rewatched. No, they didn't say what you're accusing them of, and seemed to have considered her the best part of the movie.

People talked about it a bit in the RLM thread.

I mean they've stated their theory on this in their review itself, so it just seems needless outside of a second chance to get hits off this movie.

Just so people know, Scientist Man is a satirical anal-sis. Don't take it too seriously.

They also did this with the Terminator timeline after Genisys as well.

So, what happened to Leslie Jones was a lying narrative put forth by Sony execs to garner sympathy for their mediocre movie?

They didn't say that at all. They asked why anyone would do that as she was the best part of the movie.

It is pretty funny how so few comments can start such a media frenzy. A very few people can actually play the media like they want, of course with help of Sony, by deleting the other negative comments.

The only good thing, Ghostbuster in the end did not fail because of some misogynist conspiracy, just because it was a bad movie.

And one thing, Rolfe was right from the beginning he would have never liked the movie. So this campaign against him was about as childish as the campaign against the female cast.

We got that neonazi shitstain off Twitter thanks to that,
if Sony did this they deserve our thanks for that.

There's nothing interesting about this video. It's a joke that goes on for 13 minutes. Best part was the dumb twinkie crack.

At least I assume it's a joke, since it's RLM and since trying to get any sort of worthwhile analysis out of Youtube likes and comments is completely idiotic.

At work so I can't watch the video. It says the Twitter thing was a stunt??

They're being more than a little cheeky but they do appear to unironically put forward the idea that Sony not only put out fake positive reviews for the film but planted columns about the the degree and volume of the misogynistic backlash against the film.

It's basically more of the same that they started with their review, with Rich/Jay filling the role of bumbling strawmen insisting that no really, it's not because the fandom has a problem with women, it's just a few youtube comments guys it's not real Sony is lying to you.

...they didnt' say that at all. At worst they can be accused of saying Sony took advantage of the outrage to market a sub par film.

Their point seems more about how there isn't just a gigantic army of misogynists against this movie but more like a small but loud group. Same thing McCarthy says at the end.

Noone said that the attacks against Leslie were fake

yeah, that's all I got out of it. They were saying Sony took advantage and framed a marketing narrative and it spiraled out of control.

Naw his argument was bullshit in that he wasn't even willing to just watch it and form an opinion based on that, instead he had to "boycott" it based on his love of the original? Gimme a break. I have watched a shit ton of his videos and think the guy is genuinely likeable, but I disagreed with him on that whole bit.

If he would have just said he wasn't interested in watching it it would have been one thing, but guy went super in depth on the reasons, and the reasons weren't all that great.

Edit: I agree any campaign against him is stupid and pointless given that it's just his opinion, my issue was with his reasonings in the initial video that he explained it all. Just found it to be a really weak stance.

Mike edited the bit about Leslie Jones exactly the same way he edited the part about Sony buying good reviews in the past and selectively editing negative feedback in their youtube comments (which we believe why?), and the caps it off with this:

fraudulentmovementydahp.png

"By taking some relatively insignificant numbers, and exacerbating a small problem, they were able to ignite a fraudulent movement."

If this isn't a complete minimization of what happened to Jones while simultaneously taking a cheap shot at the idea that girls might actually be excited by female heroes in an action movie then I'd like a better explanation for why they structured that part of the video that way.

p much.

Sony Pictures ain't exactly known for their smooth marketing setups.

Just look a the trailers for Ghostbusters.

So, what happened is you just made shit up and assumed without watching the video?

They weren't talking about what happened to Jones specifically. They were talking about the runup to the release and marketing before the movie ever came out. The stories about Jones were in the wake of release and those people were being just terrible garbage piles, but that doesn't change that Sony couldn't market a good movie so they instead tried to market sympathy towards women as a whole.

No, he was absolutely right, the trailers were previewing what the movie was about. Only Leslie Jones was in the movie actually better than in the trailers. But why should he watch a movie which was pretty much an Adam Sandler movie with a female cast, when he likes the well scripted and sarcastic humor of the originals. So he should have watched the movie just to find out, that he would not have liked it.

Sony published those trailers, not some shadow organization to sabotage the movie. So they put in there what they thought was marketing the movie the best. So he should have ignored the trailers Sony themselves have put out to promote the movie?

I think their thing is that it's strange that a movement would come to try to defend a film that they see as of inferior quality particularly when there are films like Star Wars which are better, and therefore they must have been manipulated into doing so.

He saw the trailer. He didn't like what he saw. He decided to not see the movie. Judging by how the movie is performing he's not alone nor is it specifically unique to this movie.

So how many people were involved in the Jones twitter racism incident. 5 or 10? Would not actually prove this their point? You will always find 5-10 completely crazy people on the internet. Even Rolfe got death threats. Because 5-10 people are complete assholes this is a bigger trend or a prove to anything?

I stopped after 10 minutes because I don't really want to hate them. Case in point them doing mock over-reactions to sexism and then using that to disparage any argument pointing out the wave of hatred towards the leads being women.

I think their thing is that it's strange that a movement would come to try to defend a film that they see as of inferior quality particularly when there are films like Star Wars which are better, and therefore they must have been manipulated into doing so.

You know that actually sounds insane right?

I didn't like this movie so people who did must have been manipulated inyo thinking they do or are paid liars

Sub par to them.

It got decent reviews overall.

Though I imagine part if their narrative is that those decent reviews are all fake though soooo

Obviously it's their opinion. The fake reviews thing probably shouldn't have been in the review I'll agree with that. The wider thing they're saying is that people latched on to a shitty film to promote a narrative. I guess they're implying that group can do better than the Ghostbusters reboot. I have not seen the film.

At this point I feel like I have to eventually see the Ghostbusters movie just because of all the drama about it.

I mean its a franchise movie trying to reboot a franchise so they can sell twinkies and juiceboxes. Where they couldn't get the original cast for years because Murray is a nut to get a hold of since he has no agent and only takes scripts from people he knows or a 1800 number he checks 3 times a year and then one of the actors dies. So they decided to take a different approach and have a cast that targeted a newly recognized demographic of female viewers after the incredible success of Bridesmaids.

But the new promotion of the movie greatly differed from the original fanbase and marketing of the original movie whose exploitation is the entire point of remaking and using a franchise. Then people took to the movie to either use it as a spewing point for their hateful beliefs or they promoted the film as something that needs to be successful because of the lack of female leads in traditional Hollywood blockbusters.

Thats even before the movie comes out.

I mentioned it before in the redlettermedia thread but did Sisters or Trainwreck get this kind of backlash being that it has a predominate female cast? I know the genres are different but I feel like the buzz was pretty good coming out of those movies.

If this never had the Ghostbusters brand attached to it would people even care about it? Is there such an insecurity by Hollywood to fund a film today without a franchise that people have some type of memory of?

Yeah, I'm pretty lenient with respect RedLetterMedia sometimes, but it's really eyerolly how their commentary and videos are becoming blatantly "anti-SJW" etc. This video just feels like they are, intentionally or unintentionally, reporting on only one facet of the discussion; they don't seem to even talk about the hate that sprung forth before the trailer.

To put it into perspective, the "girl power" image was in response to the hate over the gender of the women. So like, maybe they could even try to research the topic before talking about it

Sub par to them.

Every review without any mentioning of the problems of the craft written by a professional journalist is pretty much worthless. If you ignore all the problems of a movie (editing, plot, cuts) just because it does not fit your narrative, then your are no reviewer but just a columnist or a talking head. You can do that, but then you should not call your article a movie review, just an opinion piece. And again and I told it a million times, youtubers will kill professional journalism without a problem.

All I remember about Ghostbusters promotion was the awful trailer, it was the most downvoted trailer and then hearing about how bad the movie was. Like Pixels bad.

This is them asserting Sony is using the backlash to sell their movies on an emotional appeal to pity their actresses under attack.

rlmnews026kbkk.png

This is what they play immediately after Jay asks why anybody would attack Leslie Jones, a question nobody tries to answer in the video. The visual parallel isn't an accident.

And they cap the film with McCarthy being wrong about ignoring internet harassment because somehow that makes it go away.

RLM is being pretty shitty with its all in on how it's all a part of Sony's marketing machine.

Did you pull this number from thin air then use it to build your entire point?

I mean, it's three white guys who rarely step into anything political because they don't want to get involved with that junk, so I can at least understand why they would be so confused at all the furor over over something they consider to be mediocre.

So what you're say, is if a review doesn't fit your narrative you ignore it?

With that said, I did my duty and dislike the video!

this is a Ghostbusters joke

I still disliked the video but it is not my duty to have done so, I just did not like it

It is all part of Sony's marketing machine.

What? Do you think those kids were in the hospital were real? They were actors, taking that picture for girl power.

It's all sony's doing.

These mouth breathers really are scum bags.

Yeah, they're real hack frauds

That said, while I agree with their review of the film (middling to poor), this video seems unnecessary, though the recurring point they've made has been that Sony is only interested with corporate product placement with this film
