Reggie explains why Metroid Prime 4 was announced so early

Real reason is that people would hate on the 3ds one HARD if they thought that's all they get. Overshadowing everything. They learned from FF.

Not so sure about this. I'm sure Nintendo will get us the game but would have preferred for them to stay quiet until they could show us the actual game.
Hell no.
Just last week people were listing Metroid in one of the dead franchices thread.

At least that will stop for some time now.

Didn't the do this exact thing with Prime 3?

On point.

I'm fine with it, it's not like this is Square Enix we're talking about and typically even when Nintendo announced titles are 2-3 years away the wait is usually worth it, see Zelda, and the delays that got obviously paid off. AND there's one coming out in just a few months.
This is how I feel as well. They wanted to let people know Metroid lives and will be back in full force. I'm perfectly fine knowing it now and waiting.

He added later, "Now STFU about Metroid for a while."

I kinda want Nintendo to STFU about Metroid for a while. I'm thrilled to know that Prime 4 is coming, but I'd rather not be drip-fed meager bits and pieces of info for the next 2+ years. Re-reveal it when it's good and ready (playable, hopefully).

I don't mind the early announcements for Metroid Prime 4 or the new Pokemon game. It just felt like Nintendo acknowledging that they understand what their consumers want and that they hear them.

I don't care about Metroid Prime but it's clear that Metroid fans were desperate. I think throwing out a logo in this case to take the heat off Nintendo is fine. But then again I never really have a problem with it.

It does show that you really can't win with everyone. You either don't come to E3 with enough announcements or you announce games too early. There doesn't seem to be any real consistency with how to respond to these conferences on GAF. (Yes I get because GAF is not a hivemind etc etc).

Actually you know what? I think Nintendo should do this. They have a new console that Nintendo is still trying to build the case for software wise. Why not announce some of the games you are working on early? It makes me feel more confidant as a Switch owner.

They probably anticipated the backslash of announcing a 2.5D 3DS Metroid without a Switch one coming up.

And it's definitely this too.

Fire Emblem, Pikmin 4, MP4, and Pokemon all got announced early because otherwise people would be hounding them wondering why they're still getting 3DS entries and not Switch ones.

I spent enough time rolling my eyes at the "year of dreams" people in 2015 who lapped up vague promises about FF7R and Shenmue that I don't want to get too invested in Prime 4 until we see something more concrete.

That said, Prime 4 definitely gave me a window into how those people felt. As for the announcement strategy, I reckon it was partly to cover all bases: after being blindsided by Other M's failure to convert E3 announcement hype into an acceptable launch, and getting overwhelmed by the hostility to Federation Force, I would guess Nintendo was eager to avoid a situation where any vocal elements of the base might look at the imminent prospect of a 2D Metroid by MercurySteam on 3DS (all three of these points objectionable to somebody, somewhere) and, instead of embracing it, get as antsy as the Pokémon people did when Ultra Sun/Moon was announced without any word about the series' future on the Switch.

Perfectly understandable. It showed me that they know what the fans want and are giving it to them. The Switch has a wonderful future and after the Wii U people needed to know that.

I like a mix of announcements to look forward to that's further away and announcements/trailers for games close to release to make a diverse E3 showing.

The only thing really differentiating this from what other publishers often do is they didn't throw together some CGI thing.

I think they are holding off showing anything that's over a year out.
It looks like the Fire Emblem, Metroid and Pokémon promises were all timed to stave off some of the oh so popular 3DS whining.

IMO people would've been angry if they showed Metroid for 3DS but not for Switch, similar to what happened with Pokémon. (Maybe not as much since Samus Returns looks great and we've wanted a new Metroid for a long time now.)

It was obviously this. If they wanted to sell a 3DS remaster of Metroid 2 from an unproven developer they had to let the hardcore know that the franchise was really coming back all the way. Once they did that people could view the Samus Returns announcement free of the years worth of cynicism and anger.

Was a solid, clever move. I mean, I hate the way MP4 was revealed but if I was Nintendo I'd have done the same.

I think this also clears up the on and off narrative about Nintendo only announcing stuff close to reveal. They pretty much do what they want as it serves whatever goals they have in mind.

Announcing Metroid early is probably a good idea sales wise anyway. They can take time to build up positivity and hype over the next year or two, which stuff like Mario doesn't really need.

Yeah it drove me crazy all the people saying "There's no way we get long-term reveals, they said 2017 only!" Nintendo never holds fast to those pre-Direct statements, they're just to set expectations appropriately.

My guess is it's farther along than we think, and will be a major 2018 Holiday title, complete with the Zelda/Mario-style takeover of the E3 booth.

I think they revealed this year to take the edge off of the 3DS announcement, but didn't want to show anything until they do the proper reveal.

I think either Metroid or Pokemon will get the Zelda/Mario style takeover. Either one of those games could be the keystone title in their 2018 holiday season.

Nintendo could have just announced Samus Returns and leave the Prime 4 announcement for a Direct next year. Fans would have been pleased.

Uh Reggie...you did announce Mario Odyssey months ago.

As a big Metroid fan I would've been fine with waiting until there was some gameplay footage of Prime 4.

now Reggie just needs to release Mother 3 and his soul will finally be freed from the wrath of angry video game nerds

Oh, don't worry. There are plenty of newer games they can continue to bug him about.
Zangeki no Reginleiv English localization/HD remake when??
Captain Rainbow when??
new F Zero when??

"With Metroid Prime 4 and Pokemon for Switch, what we wanted to do was make people think we had an excellent E3 without having to actually show anything."

Saying this in jest, but tbh their most exciting announcements were the ones with few details.
