Portable success/failure doesn't always translate to consoles.

It'll probably out-sell the PS3 version (which I hope it would, considering the install bases), but lifetime? Not so sure about that.
Mario Kart Wii sold 20 million.

Not going to continue that argument here, we can take it PMs if you're that interested. But yea, this is debatable.
No need, believe me. To steal a phrase from Frank, yes its debateable but it'd be like arguing with a piece of furniture and I don't want to argue with my table. You HD people are like zombies. Seriously.

It's pretty reasonable to expect NSMB Wii to outsell MW2... in the long-run. In fact, its almost guaranteed that, based on Mario Kart Wii and NSMB's sales, NSMB Wii is going to eventually come out on top.

But wow, that's a pretty risky bet made by Reggie. I can see NSMB selling more than the top-selling version of MW2 in December and January, but its November sales are going to be sincerely overshadowed.

It's going to have a lot to catch up to, and it's surely going to be a close race.

on the game starved wii, anything with Mario's face will sell multi millions

You don't let one opportunity go by do you?

I'm frankly amazed at how many posters here on NeoGAF are actually being rational about this statement and thinking it through before posting. Only a couple of you said really stupid things.

There is almost no way NSMB Wii doesn't outsell the PS3 version of MW2 over the holiday period. Outselling both and the PC version is also almost entirely impossible with just US sales figures. Beating just the 360 is unlikely but not impossible over two and a half months, but lifetime is more than feasible, and given the track record of the previous 2D game besting the worldwide sales on all platforms over the span of a year or two is almost inevitable.

If a game is launched by Nintendo on a Sunday it is guaranteed to sell multiple millions this gen. This game is released on a Sunday.

:lol Please.

Mario Kart Wii sold 20 million.

Ok, that still doesn't mean that the NSMB Wii will. Last Mario game sold around 8 million on the Wii, which would equal the amount that MW1 sold on the 360, but not overall (14 million).

So we'll see.

Mario will outsell most games including MW2 for one reason alone. And that's because of the complete lack of anything really good to play on the Wii besides Nintendo's own. Its a safe purchase. Most games on the Wii are bad, any first party quality known franchise will sell since its a known commodity with very little competition from other third party Wii games.

I would never have believed 10 years ago that I would one day grow to despise Nintendo. But here I am... don't really even care about this comment in particular, I'm saying it's become kind of a general loathing. It's been a decade in the making, but now that I finally have that off my chest, carry on... I'm done.

Bravo to the posters using this to try their own little stealth troll on the Wii's lineup.

Need some Linkin Park to soothe your inner turmoil? :lol

Seriously great emo posting, I can't wait to read your tales of suffering in your blog!

I doubt it, considering the type of audience that plays MW anyways. If their parents let them cuss and yell out racist comments online im pretty sure they won't care either way :)

That reminds me, when is one of the great games coming out, like S&P2?

There's an ongoing argument whether this gme will be like MKWii or ACWii.

There is?!

Unless you don't mean a valid argument...

2D Mario =/= 3D Mario.

It's like trying to use Super Mario 64 DS's sales to predict those of NSMB.

Because Nintendo up until this gen were all about having the most advanced tech?
Well, in a way they were pretty technology-happy before, the SNES had a lot better graphics and sound than the Sega Genesis, the N64 boasted a custom graphics processor developed in tandem with Silicon Graphics (that was nigh impossible to program, hence the therrible-looking games) and the Gamecube had quite a bit more power than the PS2 and was only narrowly outclassed by the Xbox. For its price and size, the Cube was a pretty damn impressive machine, it's amazing how quickly people forget this.

NSBW is the biggest test for a 2D game on a console.. maybe ever? Anyone who supports hardcore old school gaming should be supporting this game.

Like I said, we'll see. PS3 sales will make his comment come true, but lifetime? Not so sure.

The discs were teh small. =P
But yea, The Q version was very impressive.

We also have to consider the Japanese market. NSMB Wii WILL outsell most Western games in Japan by massive amounts alone. MW2 will have to make up the difference in NA/Europe. If Reggie is talking worldwide by the end of the year, Mario will be the last guy standing

Well I pulled these numbers when made a thread at another forum, but just for a history, here is how Mario Galaxy compared to the original Modern Warfare.

November 2007 Top 10 Video Games Rank # Units
360 CALL OF DUTY 4: MODERN WARFARE ACTIVISION (CORP) NOV 2007 MATURE (M) 1 1.57 million
WII SUPER MARIO GALAXY NINTENDO OF AMERICA NOV 2007 EVERYONE (E) 2 1.12 million
PS3 CALL OF DUTY 4: MODERN WARFARE ACTIVISION (CORP) NOV 2007 MATURE (M) 7 444K

Top 10 SW Sales
360 CALL OF DUTY 4: MODERN WARFARE ACTIVISION (CORP) NOV 2007 MATURE (M) *1 1.47 million
WII SUPER MARIO GALAXY NINTENDO OF AMERICA NOV 2007 EVERYONE (E) 2 1.40 million

I hope NSMB Wii outsells MW2, especially after the PC debacle.

IW already said 'fuck the hardcore' with the PC version of MW2. :)

Yeah, this is surely a title that is going to be front loaded. Do you have any clue as to how Nintendo software sells this generation?

Your response is more awkward that my post... little overdone I think.

Yeah. Nintendo, up until the Wii, was always willing to play ball with its competitors.

if it has the type of legs that wii sports has as a must have title for the wii... which is should... it will definitely outsell mw2.

Of course, but I have a wait and see attitude about this one.

If you disagree, hey, fine. We'll see what happens.

If you only want to talk in definite inevitabilities, then no, doesn't mean NSMB Wii will. Doesn't mean MW2 will sell beyond the pre-orders, but we both know that's not true.

We make predictions based on relatively good evidence. Absent a time machine, "It is probably going to do really well like the DS game" isn't a particularly outrageous claim, so you can stop with the "IT MIGHT NOT WHO KNOWS" chorus. You're right, maybe it won't! A meteor might crash on November 16th in Redmond. But we have good indications it will sell really well.

This is actually a pretty reasonable prediction, I think it can at least match the 360 version but will have a hard time matching all SKUs.
