Longtime Sonic the Hedgehog fans can look forward to a key piece of series history surfacing in the upcoming remastered iOS and Android versions of the classic 16-bit platformer Sonic the Hedgehog 2, as the new mobile ports will include a finished, playable version of the game's long-lost Hidden Palace Zone.

That's right: the original Hidden Palace Zone is finally real. Insanity.

This is the work of Christian Whitehead and his amazing Retro Engine, which you may remember from Sonic 1 (iOS/Android) and 2011's Sonic CD HD. The game hits tomorrow, and is a free update for those with the currently available Sonic 2 on iOS. Otherwise, it'll run you £1.99/$2.99 on iOS. This is the first time Sonic 2 has been available on Android too, apparently.

The odds of this replacing the old Sonic 2 on XBLA/PSN are between -32 and 0, right?

Super cool though, ill probably grab on android.

Wish they could have gotten that western looking zone in as well but maaaaaaaaaaaaaan, I need to try this out badly. He's done good work.

Holy shit! Can this come to consoles? I'd buy it no doubt.

If/when I get a smart phone I'd definitely buy this. Does anybody know if games like this are playable with a controller plug in of some kind? I'd totally get a cheap little controller to make playing more cohesive and true to form.

Fuck, i might buy this for my phone. And I absolutely despise touchscreen controls for platformers. I'll see if theres a simple way to get my dualshock 4 to work with my phone.

Sonic CD HD had a teaser that the Dust Hill Zone in Sonic 2 would be returning one day, so it's possible that it made it in after all and SEGA are just keeping it a secret.

Likewise, I expect Knuckles is probably in this as a playable character too.

Wounder what they will do for the boss of the zone, since iirc the it just had the same boss as the Mystic Cave zone in the unfinished version.

NVIDIA Shield + these ports = heaven <3

Picking this up tomorrow ASAP

Are you talking about Sonic 2 Long Version? Because all of those cut levels were fanmade (in terms of layout and boss fights), not officially made by Sega. The levels themselves never had a single finished act, Hidden Palace Zone was the closest we got to a finished stage but even then its only act wasn't even probably half done.

Damn, I might have to get the cable to hook my Dualshock 3 up to my phone. I never did beat this game as a kid because I couldn't figure out how to damage the final boss without killing myself.

I hate that these versions are only coming out on ios and android. Damn.

For whatever it's worth, they have the only virtual controller set-up that I can fuck with. Sonic 1 iOS is super playable despite the touchscreen. Obviously it's not a physical controller and that'd be nice, but hey, go shout at SEGA I guess.

And hey, there's controller support for iOS nowadays, so...

The first was actually a phenomenal port.

If these ever get controller support on iOS (I don't know if it's on Android already), it may be the perfect port.

The beta just had a half-finished single act that tapered off into the abyss.

I'd wager the design for this release is mostly original.

I guess I might try it out. And yeah, there's controller support for android and ios these days, but i really wish i could just buy this on steam or psn and play it on my tv.

Yeah, it'd be ideal. Especially what with trophies and all (Sonic CD HD actually had a pretty nice selection of trophies to get, really sort of tested your knowledge of the game).

You even think about putting together Sonic 1, 2, CD with Sonic 3 & Knuckles getting similar treatment, packaged for consoles and or Vita and I will give you money like you wouldn't believe Sega!

Good to see Retro Engine being a success too! One of the smartest things Sonic wise Sega has done in years! And kudos to da Taxman!
Doing God's work.

I wish they'd update the ancient versions of Sonic 1-K on Xbox Live to Taxman's engine for free, as they are doing here.

The two genesis remasters and the Sonic CD version are how classic games deserve to be treated when brought up to newer hardware. Not that Backbone garbage. This way or the superb m2 emulation only.

I really hope these get brought to the PS4 and Xbox one when the inevitable re-releases of these titles hit.
