Remember the Diddy Kong Racing U rumor? This is too strange/funny...

I didn't even like the first Diddy Kong Racing. Never understood why people dug it. Mario Kart all the way.

It's Mario Kart with challenges and stuff to find in each stage!!

edit
I'm glad people like Excite games, I wasn't a big fan of the motion steering but the games looked decent and I guess in Wii U we would have the ability to choose control scheme.

You didn't give them enough of a chance. The steering mechanic feels problematic but once it gels, you realize that it's perfect. I dismissed ExciteTruck a couple of times and then one day I decided to give it another shot and everything just clicked. Give it another go sometime. Convert some of your favorite songs to AAC, throw them on an SD card and spend a couple of hours with it. You'll be glad you did.

Excite is the only thing Monster should be doing. Easily two of the best games on the Wii.

I liked Excite Truck, but I LOVED Excitebots. It still makes me mad to this day that it was sent out to die. I remember all of the hype in that one topic. I remember one GIF of an Excitebot kicking the Ubisoft logo into a soccer net that was labeled "Garbage" or something like that. That was back when Ubisoft was putting as much trash on the Wii as possible.

Anyway, I love the controls and how well they felt, the amount of unlockables, the online play (rest in peace, Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection), and the many hours I spent perfecting runs to score the most stars. There NEEDS to be a sequel, and this time one that releases worldwide!

Nintendo should just release a Diddy Kong Racing DLC pack for Mario Kart 8. Have it include Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong, Cranky Kong, and Funky Kong, as well as the DK Cup, which would include 4 Diddy Kong Racing tracks reimagined with Mario Kart 8 mechanics.

I've been imaging something similar, if a standalone game Isn't happening then this just has to

Damn, you uncovered the secret Donkey Kong Racing game. DK and Diddy face off against a insane lion who wants to be emperor of the world via power stolen from the Diamond Pineapple. Race against the emperor and his minions to secure the Pineapple. But the Kongs aren't the only ones going for it. Joining the race are Kremlins, Tikis, and even Snomads, who all want the power. Wind your way through rally-car inspired off-road courses of all seasons, navigate the unfriendly skies in your trusty Kong-copters through treacherous canyons and weather (hurricanes, culminating in a tornado course), brave the unpredictable nature of water at its worst over white water rapids and a tsunami. There will even be special appearances from classic faces like Stanley the Bugman, and Pauline. Secret courses include 8-bit inspired Girder Madness, Pie Factory, and Jr's Key Crisis (complete with Snapjaws and Nitpickers) and the rhythmic Bongo Barrelslide. All in 60fps and 4-player local multiplayer. Battle modes are extra DLC.

Ok, forgetting the joke above, I think another Diddy Kong Racing would be nice. Just keep the number of items low.

This is so funny.

I was just talking to my buddy as we played Kart 8 online. Talking about how DKR was really the better game during N64. The items were clever with upgrades, there were tons of tracks and a cool hub world. We loved the planes and hover crafts. Battle mode was great and the boss races were a great addition.

It's really a shame those mechanics haven't moved to kart or we haven't gotten a true sequel. It's too bad that it got screwed from the Rare split. So many good unused and wasted IPs just sit thanks to that.

In terms of character rights Rare only owned Banjo and Conker, which is why they were changed out for Dixie and Tiny in the DS version. Nintendo owns the IP itself too, just like they do Donkey Kong Country and Star Fox Adventures.
No, Rare actually owns more than just them. As has already been pointed out in this thread, DKRDS's copyright notice does say "Certain characters licensed by Rare".

And they answered exactly who they own in a Scribes article in June 2007:

Hello again, Loveday.
I recently played through DKR DS, and I must say that aside a few issues (icons made with only the touch screen, the touch screen way of boosting), it was a very good game for what's supposed to be Rare's 1st DS game. No idea why the critics lambasted it like they did. Pity. It didn't deserve it, much like a certain romp through a haunted mansion.
Anyway, I have a question that isn't only puzzling me, but is puzzling "countless" others. In the beginning of DKR DS, the line "Certain characters licensed by Rare" can be read. Most Rare fans know that you own the rights to Tiptup, which is a given. However, who else from DKR DS do you guys own?
As an incentive to get some answers, take a gander at this non-rubbish Rubbish Picture Attachment. A recent Scribes writer (and personal friend of mine) by the name of "Katzii Yataki" sent me this Pants Amazing card for my birthday. Impressed? Disturbed? Taken aback? If you guys ever get into making Rare merchandise, "Sorry I Cheated On You" Mr. Pants cards should be of utmost priority.
May the Pants continue to bless Rareware,
Mark "darkmark8" Mazzei

As far as I'm aware - after asking around - all the major DKR characters who aren't Kongs or Kremlings still belong to Rare. Which would make Diddy, Dixie, Tiny and Krunch the 'licensed' ones in this case. And that means we can still do the M-rated Bumper prequel story! Thank you Jesus!
Nice card... further possibilities should Mr. Pants expand into the event-based stationery market are 'Thanks For The Novelty Underwear, It Made My Xmas' and 'Commiserations On Being Run Over Before Changing Your Week-Old Pants'.
Rare owns everyone in DKR except Diddy and Krunch. Why Banjo and Conker were removed from DKRDS is unclear--but it wasn't just because Rare owns them.

You forget that Viva Pinata (100% MS IP) came just afterward on DS.

Weirder? Blue Dragon Plus (another MS IP) also came to the DS, guess who co-developed it? Brownie Brown (now 1-UP Studio), who Nintendo 100% own since their forming back around 2001.

I generally consider those games a weird stretch that's just a product of its time. Smartphone gaming had yet to catch on, so Microsoft had absolutely nothing to lose as it wasn't a player in any sort of mobile/handheld market. The 360 was riding high while the PS3 had yet to really start recovering from its launch woes (i.e. this was still "the PS3 has no games" phase). Always seemed to me that Microsoft was basically rubbing salt in Sony's wounds with the appearance of some of its IP on the DS.

Mario Kart is such a juggernaut why would they bother with a second kart racer?

Nintendo strictly limits the series to one installment per hardware iteration. So at least based on that trend, it's doubtful they're going to make "Mario Kart 9" in a year or two for Wii U. So even if DKR doesn't have the same level of broad appeal as Mario Kart, if they wanted to do another sort of kart racer for the Wii U, it would be that or something original.

Yeah that sounded too good to be true. I'll wait until next year.

Don't like the animals though. DKR still has the best multi-terrain vehicles of any series that's tried it, including MK8 and SASRT.

I thought this thread was about this post, which makes it more than plausible that DKR2 is an actual thing

http://kevincallahangames.wordpress.com/2014/07/09/the-strange-development-of-diddy-kong-racing-2/

I want to call bullshit on the fact that this insider came out of thin air only to talk about DKR2 on a seemingly professional space. But goddammit, if DKR2 actually exists, this would make a lot of sense.

Especially the last part. Why the hell did Diddy Kong, who's been a console Mario Kart veteran since Double Dash, get sidelined by seven Koopalings, a baby character and one paint job? That seemed like the most random character exclusion to ever have when it came to that game.

I'll take this with a mine worth of salt since the aforementioned elephant in the room is hard to avoid.

Somebody could start Excitebots on Dolphin and take a look at the files in the game (right click -> properties -> file system). Perhaps there are some hints. It's very true that a prototype of a Wii game, which was not Excitebots, was cancelled in mid 2007.

And this was by Monster?

Not even going to lie that I hope to hell that the article is true, and the author also raises some interesting points. The Excitebots thing in particular piqued my interest.

The biggest bummer though, would be the rumor about the failed negotiation for the original Diddy Kong Racing cast members, and that the sequel will essentially be a bunch of low-profile Nintendo characters. I could maybe see someone like Dillon fitting in, but Mallo in Diddy Kong Racing is a stretch.

I specifically remember Micael Kelbaugh (the Retro President) saying that they co-developed MK 7 to learn about what makes a track fun to play in an interview.

....aside from having the game ready for the holidays 2011 to save the 3DS

This blog may be made up, but it is a reasonable theory....and not reaching at all.

I would down for Diddy Kong and Nintendo all Star Racing transformed, providing they can make it miles better than the original Diddy Kong racing on the N64.

Rare actually had under development a game called The Fast and the Furriest for 360 using the camera, here's the artwork:

Kinda proves Nintendo doesn't own the other characters.

Holy shit I can't fucking breathe

After re-reading the article again, I assume it's fan-fiction.

Monster Games and Retro Studios would soon form a bond over the Donkey Kong intellectual property. Retro Studios, who had been successful with the Donkey Kong IP, was tasked with assisting Monster Games on Diddy Kong Racing 2. RetroÂ’s contributions to MonsterÂ’s Diddy Kong Racing project is why Nintendo asked Retro to assist with Mario Kart 7′s development.

Monster Games ported RetroÂ’s Donkey Kong Country Returns to the 3DS. Monster Games is also credited for assisting Retro Studios on the development of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze for Wii U. It is no coincidence that Monster Games has worked on TWO Donkey Kong projects in a row. Many of the art assets from Tropical Freeze were used during the development of Diddy Kong Racing 2.

If Retro's contributions to DKR2 made Nintendo ask them to contribute to MK7, why didn't they ask Monster Games instead? When exactly were they supposed to contribute? Retro finished DKCR in late 2010 and started on MK7 in 2011. Monster was busy with Pilotwings in late 2010 and early 2011. In late 2011, Retro started to work on DKC:TP, while Monster was already working on a port of DKCR.

Also, Monster Games was only needed during the final months of DKC:TP as it was needed to be finished on time. Most of Nintendo's Wii U titles made use of this "outsourcing" to make development times shorter.

Moreover, with Monster Games only having about 30 employees makes it pretty unbelievable that they have a Wii U title in development.

Characters such as Mallo (Pushmo) and Rusty (RustyÂ’s Real Deal Baseball) were also added as racers to fill out the roster.

This sounds pretty unlikely for Nintendo imo as they rarely make such random crossovers.

Mario Kart and Diddy Kong being release around the same time wouldn't exactly make sense for Nintendo right now, so I really don't think anything is up.

Rare owns the rights to all the characters except Diddy.

This is easily rectified by them replacing all of the non-Diddy racers with other DK characters and lesser known racers as was mentioned like Mallow and Dillon.

Rare owns the rights to all the characters except Diddy.

Nintendo owns Krunch (the kremling) as well.

Anyways, I have no idea if this rumor is true or false, but we've been hearing this rumor since late 2012.

Even if this rumor is false, it sure has some long legs.

I agree that it reads like fan fiction, but the bolded can pretty well be explained by the fact that Retro is a bigger studio than Monster Games.

From the article:

2) 2010′s Donkey Kong Country Returns would sell over 6 million units worldwide. The game sold more than any Zelda or Metroid game for Wii.

Holy crap, is that true? Even Zelda?

IIRC, Nintendo owns all of the characters who debuted in DKR that's not Conker or Banjo. I know this because T.T got a complete redesign in Nuts and Bolts as Trophy Thomas.

I have to admit, it would be amusing if Retro made a better Kart racer than EAD.

Since many people here believe that DKC:Tropical Freeze is a better platformer than NSMBU.

Maaaaaan, i don't wanna buy into that rumor, but the idea of a game focused on video game second bananas trying to make the big leagues is a super great idea.

That's actually a different character. They just reused the name as a reference to DKR's T.T.

EDIT: Also, that blog post reads like some great fanfiction, but I would laugh so hard if it were true. Rusty and Dillon in a kart racer? I'd buy it.
