Remember Tradewars 2002? Anything like that exist today?

Anybody play Tradewars 2002 back in the mid 90s - 00's? If yes, please skip to bottom of post thx. If not, here is a brief summary...it was the very first MMO that I can remember. You are a trader in a universe whose main goal was to accumulate credits. The universe could vary in size depending on the servers settings and each sector was generated randomly and connected in an non-congruent way. Sectors 1-10 were always federation space but sector 1 didn't always connect to sector 2 and so forth. You started out in a small spacecraft going from port to port buying and selling ore, fuel, food, and equipment. The game was pretty much just text and you would warp to different sectors. Many sectors were empty. Others had ports that would sell or buy 3 of the resources. Prices changed depending on the port and how much trading has gone on in the sector. Eventually you would earn enough to go to spaceport and upgrade ships, buy Genesis torpedoes (the game borrowed heavily from Star Trek), and fighter jets (small jets you could send out to fight aliens and capture their ships).

Eventually I would map out sections of the universe to find one sector that had a single entry and exit point. This is where you would create your planet. You had several types that could be made so a lot of it was luck to get a highly productive one. From there you would build your star base, upgrade, it's citedel, and eventually ferry people from other planets you found to your own to put them to work to make resources and sell them to nearby ports.

Combat was great. Each ship had shields and you would send your fighters out not destroy the ship but to get the other player to abandon it so you could tow it to spaceport and sell it for credits. But it was tricky. Too many jet fights sent destroyed the ship. Many alien races would lace the hull with bombs that would blow you up in the process. Too few fighters and their forces overwhelm yours and you just left them out for certain death. Finding that sweet spot of how much aggression was always fun.

And all of this was happening thoughout thousands of sectors of about 20-50 players. For having no graphics really, the game had more depth than many MMOs today.

So my questions is, what exists today that's like this? I know Elite Dangerous but I have read enough to where it's more space battles than resource collection, bartering, and overtaking a section of the galaxy through commerce. Or maybe it's exactly this?

I have No Man's Sky ordered but I know the depth of building citedels, and setting up a space business isn't happening for a while (ever).

So GAF, is Elite my best shot? Or is there something else out there? Finding old portals of Tradewars is becoming more and more difficult. Which makes me sad. It's the greatest computer game I have ever played.

I know what you are looking for, but there really isn't a one to one modern translation. At least not that I know of. Something like the X2 series (I'd skip X3 Rebirth) would sorta scratch that itch. So would a game called Unending Galaxies. Both are available on Steam, so you can look at them. They are both single player though. There was another BBS game, called Planets: TEOS, which was made by Seth Able (of LORD fame). It was a mix of Tradewars 2002 Lite and LORD. Maybe Solar Realms Elite? Another BBS game. Although I think SRE wasn't true multiplayer.

I have a BBS up, that I've run since the late 90's. I have all of those BBS games on there, including a Tradewars 2002 Gold server. Unfortunately, no one plays the door games. Everyone hides out in MajorMUD. If you get nostalgic and want to check them out, you can telnet in at bentoboxbbs.com. Again, no else plays them, so it would only be to check them out. It's not a lot of fun to play them solo.

A guess some of the space 4X style games might work too. Maybe someone else will chime in with a more modern take on Tradewars. It was a seriously awesome game for its time.

I will definitely stop by. Just to try and experience again something that was so important to my childhood. I loved the game so much. Thank you for the invite!

Tradewars was awesome, but you had to check in all the time. I remember going on vacation with a huge fleet, only to come back to everything wiped out. After I got access to the internet, MUDs and MOOs quickly replaced the BBS games for me.

I guess you could say that EVE Online is a bit like Tradewars, no?

Offworld Trading Company might be right up your alley.
I saw Offworld was on sale at GMG but I am still hesitant to pay $30. The fact that it takes place on a single planet made it seem very different that TWG. Will read up on it moe to see if it will scratch that itch.

Thank you for the suggestion. I don't know much about EVE to be honest but reading up on it, it seems to be an evolution of TWG itself. This looks interesting and I am wondering how difficult it is for a new player getting up to speed. The learning curve looks steep and I'm not sure I want to enter the dark bowels of monthly subscription gaming. Definitely worth checking out though (free 14-day access and GMG sale as well.)

I've never tried EVE so I can't offer much advice. It certainly seems daunting, but also one of the few games that focuses mercilessly on trading and making your own way, building up your fortune, and if you're reckless can also lose it all quickly. So it reminded me of Tradewars in that way. I think most people end up joining a Corporation to get some manner of protection.
