Remote Play ported on all Android 4.0+ devices [requires rooted phone]

Remote play helps their mobiles sales. If they make it work on every mobile then they will lose unique feature. I think this will be patched soon by Sony as this is not providing any money to them and they will lose sales.

The thinking is that this would promote ps4 sales in a bigger way that exclusivity helps their mobile sales.

i hope someone ports this to jailbroken iphones/ipads.

I really want an Android phone, only reason I stick with iPhones is there are some apps that I like that aren't on android.
This isn't really a port by the sounds of the XDA thread. Unless I'm missing something it seems like they've just patched the app to open up the linking to any device.

If this works imagine playing on amoled tablet goodness such as galaxy tab s. The next best thing to amoled monitor/tv.

How easy is it to root an android phone, I've always jailbreak my idevices, bit read so many horror stories of bricked android phones, performance loss and overall jankiness on rooted android phones.

It's still bullshit this doesn't work on Z2 natively, there isn't a hardware reason for it not to.

Even Apple doesn't stop software upgrades from (mostly) working on older devices.

And the PS4 update to enable it hasn't been released yet, so it seems a massive assumption it will work when that happens.

Depends on the phone. It's a doddle on many devices, much easier than jailbreaking.

And there's no intrinsic reason for jankiness other than installing too much shit you shouldn't or messing around with things you don't understand, just like jailbreaking.

This seems like something that could easily be patched out in firmware. Is it wise to do a release of this months before the update is released? If you publish the exploit after the firmware releases, at least you would then be able to have a valid version that would always work barring anoher firware update.

Thanks, I'll have a loot into it nearer the release of the App.

Sony could patch this out, but this would be an expensive and useless game of cat and mouse. They would be smarter to include unique hardware inside future phones to fully take advantage of Remote Play at 60 Hz.

Fast decoding of video stream is almost trivial. If they want to support 60hz RP, they need to do that on the PS4's side.

Why would they? I doubt many people will do this more than a couple of times for the "hooray, it works"-feeling and then quit doing it. And I highly doubt this method would harm their sales for android devices in any significant way.

Ports require source code, so it's very unlikely that will happen. This is just a modified apk and some patch files.
Awesome! Now I want to see if the shield remote play gets ported since I am getting a 970 for my PC.

You can try Limelight on Android, it requires an Nvidia card and works with a lot of controllers.

My post above wasn't to say there's no downsides - like jailbreaking, there are certainly sometimes things that break, particularly heavily DRMed services, and can't be patched - Sky Go in the UK for example, will break with a jailbreak or root, and nobody has got close to fixing it.

So I have an Xeria Z Ultra, do I really have to root it just to install this

Also, can I just use a ps4 which im assuming my phine will recognize

Remote play on a smartphone.

- no buttons
- tons of lag
- half the framerate (if 60FPS)

BUT play on the bus. YAY.

....

It's flawless on my vita, pairing my tablet or Z2 to it while playing with a DS4 while my wife watches her shitty tv or the kids have their cartoons on is a great feature for me.

The app is 2 months away anyway, is be surprised if it's not just a case of side loading the RP app.

It won't be big for PS4 and it will be just an additional option but it will kill their Mobile sales which has produced huge loss recently. PS4 is doing fine and it will do without this also. They need this unique feature for their mobile growth for now.

But there are way more potential trip hazards:

- People who use "your" internet while you try to use it (congestion, higher latency, worse bandwidth)
- Generally the quality of your internet access
- the quality of the connection you are currently logged in (3g of course the worst, hotel wifi)
and so on. Things you can't really change but that influence the experience of remote play.

So, sure it works but it relies on many factors to be a "good" experience.

Obviously these are issues, but generally my experience of it has been fine, even when tethered to a 3G phone. When at home and using it in bed it's flawless.

This is a really big selling point that Sony really should push harder than they do if you ask me.

Cool. Seems like rooting is harder than super one click these days so I never rooted my nexus 5 but that's pretty nice.

How the shit are people missing the fact you use a ds4 for this not a touchscreen

Okay, I read the entire thread on XDA. Remote Play has NOT been ported to anything. This is just a small hack to fool the PS App into thinking it's running on a Remote Play exclusive device like the Z3. Basically, it enables a shortcut to the RP app which hasn't been released yet.

This has made me super tempted to get an Android tablet - I love Remote Play on my Vita but find the controls kinda cramped sometimes.

Edit: nvm lol

Just give me a way to stream to a computer screen.

Buy a hdmi cable for your tablet. You will be able to use remote play then.

Failing that, it should be theortically possibke to remote play on your PC Via andriod emulation, but I dont know how far that has got recently. When I last tried it it was buggy as shit.

Any of the PSN+ free games that makes good use of a second screen? Just tried this out with my Nexus 5 and Wolfenstein and having the HUD and map on the phone was cool for about five seconds.

Yes basically you need fat pipes and all of those pipes need to be dedicated to remote streaming. I had a decent experience over Xfinity wifi this weekend however.

How does this promote ps4 sales if you guys already have ps4's it makes no sense for Sony to strengthen the standings of other android phones since they get absolutely nothing out of this.
This should remain a bonus for those in the Sony ecosystem.
You wouldn't see Apple or Samsung give something like this away to benefit people outside of there ecosystem.

rooting a phone literally does nothing other than allow root access. where people run into trouble is installing custom roms, radios, kernals without researching and understanding what and why they are doing it first

Becuase Sony isn't financially in a position where it can play hard to get. Especially not with it's phone line.
Exactly. So they would want to sell more Vita's and phones which both compete with iOS devices. Your logic is the same that says that Nintendo should go third party which makes no sense at all for them in the long run.
