Report Claims Xbox 360 Failure Rates at 16%

16% of all consoles shipped?

not unbelievable, considering that (hopefully) the failure rate on new consoles is lower than older ones. also, not all consoles have had a chance to fail yet. they don't all fail on day one unless, of course, they belong to me. but give them time. oh yes, give them time.

woah 16% crazy, i assume by now most 360 owners would have sent in their 360s at least once? i still can't believe someone has 5+ breakdowns, thats some shitty luck there

From our own thread I think the failure rate is way over 40% now. That's the refurb failure rate anyway, and if you adopt the view that a refurb is repaired to "as-new" status it can also be viewed as an overall failure rate.
So 16% seems way too low.

You realize that the average gaffer plays his 360 way way way more than the average user so of course the failure rate is going to be much higher.

Even 16% is crazy....

I have a launch X-Box 360 and play maybe 30 minutes to a hour each night... and maybe 5 hours total on the weekends...

So, I am probably will not have a problem due to my lack of playing... my machine will not overheat... and I am in a cool basement, so it helps keep the temperature for the system low.

I do have spurts where I play for hours straight or download/watch a movie...

If mine breaks and I could not get it fixed for free... I would pay to fix it or buy a new one... I love the system, the controller, the X-Box Live service (I don't care that I pay yearly). It is a good system in my eyes even with 16%

I have had 5 buddies buy one because of me... they all love it and were all big PS2 owners...

What's fucking scary is that 16% is FIVE TIME higher failure rate than what is considered "normal" by the industry standard. Microsoft are completely ridiculous and that rate might have been way bigger last year.

I must say that, I'm definitely a casual gamer. After working 8 hours a day and factoring in that I do have a "life", lol I don't play my 360 that much at all. I'm on my 3rd repair... My launch premium died when Madden 08 dropped so I got a coffin and purchased an Elite cus Im a Madden whore. Now the week I just threw a Madden tourney for some kids, both of those mother******* died on me... What timing.

So IMO, it's not a usage problem. Sure usage my just speed up the inevitable but thats not the issue.

Even if you don't use your 360 much, it's not immune to the RROD. There's been people who've turned it on for the first time in months and it dies.

Yup. I still say 16% is too low an estimate. And, if you take in to account all the failed refurbs, it's even higher.

I wasn't implying that. The first 360 I purchased was RRoD out of the box. But the fact that this is a gamers board (who will generally play way more than the norm) and the main problem that triggers the RRoD is the 360's inability to adequetly dissepate heat and.....

no one cares anymore. You get a free replacement.

What about when the 3-year warranty is over? I still have a stack of PS2 games to play, and played my original Xbox for a hell of a lot longer than 3 years.

I can't be the only one here with a launch 360 that's working fine, can I?

I've had 6-hour RockBand sessions a least a dozen times since it came out, and only had one freeze (I think I was playing Puzzle Quest or maybe Madden?) in the past 6 months.

I know one or two people with working launch consoles. There are miracle ones out there, it's certainly not every launch unit that's defective.

3 years is all you need for the next console to be released. Then they'll just brush it aside like they did the Xbox.
