Representations of Arabs in Video Games

This one might be a bit dubious due to the controversial ethnicity of ancient Egyptians, but Hatshepsut was one of the faction leader options in Civ IV.

Why not just use Hamorabi if you're going to pick out an Arab in Civ?

I actually did a presentation today on some of the ideological stuff in Modern Warfare. This article has a little bit of stuff on the games portrayal of Arabs. http://ejas.revues.org/8831#abstract

There's a bit more in there too.

Generally, I disagree with some of that theory. I think that the MW games lately have portrayed Arab and American civilians generally in the same light: idiot pawns of trans-national overlords. We're all generally hapless nobodies in their MW storyline. Arabs happen to be the bullet fodder bad guys in some levels, but then again so do Russians and Americans in others, and at least with MW1 and MW2 the ultimate villains were
rogue Americans
if I remember correctly. I never played MW3, though, because the storylines were just so ridiculous from MW1 and MW2 that I could bare to suffer through the gameplay and be insulted by a completely incoherent story.

You should do research in representation of Arabs in films.

There's an excellent documentary called "Reel Bad Arabs"; which talks about the sick stereotypical representation of Arabs in movies. Needless to say, I was pretty appalled afterwards. Very unfair.

Has anybody said Assassin's Creed yet? The first one, not later ones with the ones with the middle-aged Italian. I believe Altair is Syrian.

Also, I don't know how useful this is to a discussion of modern games, but there's the Exile series, too.

Many of the Paradox strategy games have Arabic nations (some even allow you to play them). Rules of Nations also allow you to take control of the modern Arabic nations like Iraq. Most of these have special rules and random events that happen related to the culture.

Just watched it. The guy put a name on things that had been bothering me for 3 decades in movies. As an arab, I just can't help facepalming whenever I see us depicted in most medium

Probably beaten by the time I post this, but probably the desert areas in Uncharted 3 would be interesting.

Dude that one guy who gives you the horses is an awesome guy. I'm guessing someone's mentioned the Prince of Persia at this point, so what about Rapha and Marach from The War of the Lions? I always pegged them as being Fantasy Arabian.

Quest for Glory 2 was set in an Arabian mythological world and has tons of Arabian characters as well as lots of nods to middle eastern stories like Lawrence of Arabia and Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves .

While we're on the subject of video game portrayals for Middle Eastern groups, have there been any significant ones for Jews?

Sounds interesting. Gonna have to check it out.

Gonna show my ignorance here

Zafina from Tekken, a wiki says she is from India...that's an Arab now?

Edit: nevernind, her background changes depending on which region

One of my favorite genesis games!

Loved this game so much. Doesn't really play into real world locations, but lots of Persian/Arabian themes for characters and such.

i never understood why this game was never given the praise it deserved. i loved the music in this game and how the incorporated elements into everything. a drop of water falling from the ceiling actually had the property of water, the fact that nearly ever object in the game had an element associated with it is pretty impressive for a game from that era.
