Resident Evil 4 HD Project - Progress Thread

What are the odds that Capcom purchases the rights to use all this work? This is one of the most impressive fan contributions I've ever seen; it's just incredible.
It's made the PS4 version essentially obsolete for PC owners

That might depend on how they sourced their textures.

I would imagine that would be the main stumbling block for this being snapped up as an official mod of the game.

Anyway fuck Capcom and their laziness, these boys have put so much work into this and deserve for everyone to donate to them personally when officially out, I can only assume they would get peanuts from Capcom anyway.

Can someone explain to me like I'm five how this guy is doing all this? My mind is blown by all the before/after pictures.

Been holding off replaying this game for over a year now. Waiting for this update. This has to be one of the best mods I've seen in a very long time.
Same. Except I've never played it much beyond the opening hours. I figure I'll give the full game a spin once this mod comes out. Kudos to these guys working some wizardry.

It's there in the OP and their homepage:
Capcom did a lot of photography work in various areas of Spain and Wales for this game (and others), and they also leveraged existing texture libraries. So for us, it's a combination of the following:
* Going to and photographing those same locations
* Finding hi-res images online of those locations
* Simply finding the original texture images used (generally speaking, some Chinese stock photo websites, and some random blogs where people uploaded their trip's photos)

It's a combination of being very resourceful in finding the original source material and being very competent texture artists in their own right. Albert lives in Spain and has access to a lot of the locations Capcom used to make the game. He also did some work on a complete texture mod for the original (awful) 2007 PC version, so he's had practice at this.

It's a really interesting story. Like others have said, I hope that they are documenting the process well enough that we can get a comprehensive look at the process once this is all done. Some kind of documentary with video showing some of these source hunting expeditions would be great.

5 more rooms but this is the ordering of updates:
– Environmental Textures
– Items and Weapons
– Enemies, NPCs, Playable Characters, Misc.
– Mercenaries, Separate Ways, and anything not covered above

Yes, so still lots and lots of work to be done. I'd guess Holiday 2017 it'll be complete (but who knows).

I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that I've never played RE4. I was finally going to play it in 2014 but I stumbled upon this thread and decided to wait it out. I've been waiting ever since.

This project is absolutely incredible though and I'll gladly wait as long as it takes before diving into the game.

Thank you everyone for the feedback and for the suport!! :D

Is mercenaries getting a face lift too or no?

We'll remaster everything! ;D

Now that you're almost done with environments, do you plan any kind of revision phase where you'll go back over all of the textures for the whole game with another pass (to ensure consistency, final quality, etc.), or do you expect everything will be pretty much done and ready once these last rooms are addressed? I know that you've already revisited the village at least once already. Hopefully the items and weapons should be a little more straightforward and simple to work on.

Yes, since we are updating 3D models for Village area (because we didn't know how to do that when we started the project) we are revising some texture during the process aswell, but nothing major ;)

Just in case someone didn't know about them: there are 2 village updates about these 3D edits we did "a posteriori":
http://www.re4hd.com/?p=3022
http://www.re4hd.com/?p=3468
These edits are not included in the vllage demo.

Thank you everyone for the feedback and for the suport!! :D

We'll remaster everything! ;D

You guys have done a tremendous job so far, this is one of the most impressive modding projects I've ever seen, bar none.
I can't wait to see what your artistic decisions will be when it comes to weapons and enemies... I imagine it will be a much greater challenge than the environments you've worked on so far.

Also, any small hints that you might want to share regarding that topic? ;^)

Will there be a release once main game environments are done? That's the main draw for me and I don't mind putting up with low res character and weapon assets

Thank you for the compliments and the feedback - I agree!
I just glanced over at the first page and I was wondering - is this still fun for you as you mentioned early on? I'm really impressed with the grit it must have taken to get to this point. Congratulations on such an amazing feat. The work here is extremely stunning.

You guys are doing such a great job. It's incredible the amount of care and talent that goes into preserving the original intent of the art direction.

With 'remasters' like the Batman Arkham collection or the Bioshock collection where they've taken time to update and re-do a bunch of assets but have not emulated correctly or understood what made the original visuals work. It's a shame.

I really hope this mod becomes very popular once it gets released to show that a majority of fans would buy into this remaster train but if it's done right. Not by cutting corners.

We haven't decided anything about future releases yet, but I guess we'll think about that when all castle textures are finished.

Quite the opposite! At least that's what I hope...
Environmental files can be a real pain since the entire game is comprised of nature/rural/organic/industrial/laboratory/classic architectonical/ancient ruins textures ... This implies we must change our mindset continously and try to be coherent, realistic and faithful all at the same time. And some really hard to re-create textures come to my mind...

But the weapons are just... weapons
And enemies are just... flesh and clothes XD

We don't know about texture sources we'll use for the weapons/enemies yet, but I guess we'll replace the low poly ingame weapons and items with their hi-poly "examine" version.

Thank you again for the support! It's extra fuel for the long journey this project represents :)

(Excuse me if I write in a weird way sometimes..., English is not my native language :P )

There's a small update that hasn't yet been posted, apparently this area is driving Albert insane:
PRE329-a..jpg

PRE329-b.jpg

And here I was hoping these little riffraff lab rooms would go quickly so we could get to the final area... I suppose we can look forward to an even bigger upgrade here than usual though, since they're pretty much redoing everything in the room. Hang in there!

Murphy's Law dictates they'll finish the patch very shortly after I finish my current playthrough (PS4 version). I just got to Chapter 5-2, so to everyone waiting patiently, I'm almost there! And you're welcome!

Unless you're playing through at a snail's pace just a few times a week, you'll be finished long before this is done. By my guess the full single player experience won't be "done" done until spring '17 at the earliest, but it's worth every second of waiting...

Seeing theres 5 rooms left had me legitimately giddy. This is so exciting. My friend recently mentioned wanting to play RE4 since he's never played before and I'm going to plop this finished version in front of him once it's done.

Hi everyone.

This isn't a standard update in the sense that I'm not sharing new screenshots. We have two items of news to share: one good, one temporarily not-so-good.

Here is the really fast version:

1. The good: We have determined that we will release the Castle section once the remaining revisions are complete. We expect that this can happen within the next 3-5 months.

2. The not-so-good: Due to personal circumstances, I (Cris) will need to pause my work on the project for the next few months. Regardless, the project will continue via Albert's efforts until I can return.

Here are a few more details re: #2:

* I have been made aware by my employer that my position in the company is most likely going to be eliminated in January next year
* As a result, I need to focus on finding a new job either with my current employer or with another company
* Additionally, I need to complete some certifications within my field that will hopefully make me more marketable if I do end up needing to find a job with another company
* At the same time, I'm seeing this time period as an opportunity to pursue a few business ideas that I've been thinking about for some time
* Regardless of how this pans out (whether it's a new job at my current company, a new company, or something else entirely) I strongly look forward to returning to the project once my job and income situation has been sorted out
* Albert will continue working on the project as he has been, without interruption (his next update is coming in the next 1-2 days, and I think you'll like it :))
* You will still see me commenting from time to time, responding to emails, updating certain pages on the site, and other minor activities.

I'm sorry for having to step back temporarily. If you have any questions, please let me know. And thank you, everyone, for your encouragement these past 2 years.

Thank you!
- Cris

Best of luck in your job hunt. I'm looking myself currently and it really sucks.

Good luck, Cris. Not sure what your field is, but given your devotion and skill working on this side project, I have no doubt that you're awesome at it and will find something good soon.

Question though, when you say you'll "release" the castle section, you mean we'll be able to download it and play with that portion of the game updated?

Wow, this is amazing!
Fuck, Cris! Hope you can find something soon :(

Best of luck to you and Albert!
Absolutely focus on doing what you need to do. You guys have been doing god's work for a long time now.

Thanks for understanding and for the encouragement!

Yup, that's exactly right. :-)

Oh my goddddd I can't wait! Woo hoo!

Edit: wait, to be clear, I haven't missed any releases so far, right? The castle will be the first, with the village and the island later on?

Hope you can find a great new job soon! Also good luck with your qualification. I'm doing professional exams at the moment and being able to focus without distraction is essential. Regardless, hope you manage to return to the project one day.

Maybe a stupid question, but how do you feel about the first batches of textures now that you've become so familiar with the game, the process and what it takes to successfully create something that fits with the game? I'm not saying there's a difference in quality or anything like that, just curious from a purely creative standpoint.

Sucks about losing your job, Cris. Good luck with whatever you do next. Take your time, we can wait. You have our support and encouragement.

Haven't played the game for years now, and won't touch it again until this is finished. Thanks for all the hard work.

You've put in a hell of a lot of great work here Cris, I hope showing it off can help you land a sweet job that you love.

Good luck Cris! No matter how long it takes, we'll be here rooting for you and Albert!
The mod can always wait! Hope the job hunt goes well!
Also wanna say you two have been my own career aspirations in spite of, y'know:

Good luck!
Good luck in the quest for a new job!

Best of luck in sorting out your job situation. If we lived in a better world, Capcom would hire you. Or would have already, I should say.

Thank you very much guys!! I really appreciate it!

Thanks! It's funny - I've made more progress on these certifications in this short time span than I have in the last year. Definitely more focused now! :)

Great question! Overall I'm still very satisfied with the earlier portions of the game. There are, however, two things that come to mind that I would do differently now. One is re: the resolution of our textures. In the beginning we were going for an 8x increase in resolution by default (and 16x on occasion). But over time the default for me has become 16x the original texture resolution. So some of the earlier textures (i.e. from the first 2 rooms of the game) aren't quite as sharp as I'd like them to be in retrospect. For example, I remade the plaster / brick exterior texture of the houses in the first action set piece of the game at 1024 by 2048. Looking back on it now I would have gone with 2048 x 4096 (or maybe even 4069 x 8192) - especially because of the moment in the cut-scene where Leon is looking through a window and you see that texture very close up.

From a creative standpoint I do think some of the textures in the first room of the game are too clean - especially the interior wood for the cabin where you meet the first Ganado by the fireplace. But again, overall I still find the Village section very satisfying in terms of the work we've produced.

Thanks again everyone!!
