We ain't outta here in ten minutes, we won't need no rocket to fly through space
Simple thread, simple question. I haven't played RE4 since my original PS2 copy. Now, it seems to have been ported to everything other than my fridge.

I'm stuck between getting it for PC, PS4 or Switch. Are there any major differences? Is the PC version notoriously buggy, is the Switch version notoriously slow, anything like that? Are the PC controls better? Is the PS4 emulation decent?

Just curious if anyone's got experience with multiple versions and what I should look for.

Wii version, awesome pointer controls and can be played in 4k or whatever on PC with no issues and the same controls (with dolphinbar + real Wii controllers).

I suppose the PC version will be better overall when the HD Project is complete if you're looking for nicer textures and other graphical stuff.

I played on gamecube, Wii and PS3. Best version is Wii for me. Wii motion controls are really well done on this game (compared to most others Wii games).

Capcom somehow fucked up PS4 version.

Not graphically, control wise. While you move without aiming the analog dead zone for turning is horrendous. Makes the game unplayable for me.
PS3 version doesn't have this dead zone at all.

Wii version for me. Has all the content. You can use a Gamecube pad still and you can use the Wii remote. I love both controls. It doesn't have those weird QTE bugs. It doesn't have the reload animations running slower than the game. Only problem is the 480p max output but I can get over that.

Wii version with a CRT. Very heartwarming to see other GAFers have also experienced enlightenment. The main game is incredible as usual, but Mercenary mode turns into something remarkable. It's amazing fun when you aren't fiddling w the aiming and instead you're headshot-ing everything in sight.

Ps4 version only has 1 control scheme and if you don't like it too bad.

Switch gives you 3 control options, mostly 60fps and visuals are decent.

PC version is perfect in all categories.
And with the re4hd ( www.re4hd.com ) project nearly finished it's even better.

GameCube US have boobs bouncing otherwise original version. This is the only version have this.
Japaneese version have classic camera with Ashley, for all version. But Japaneese is censored

Wii is the most easy version. (Normal mode is easy on this version and Wiimote is cheated.
PS2 is downgraded from GameCube but still enjoyable
PC 1.0 is a trash port
PS360 have some bugs / glitch, run at 720p/30fps with drops, controll are some upgrade thing (R1/L1 Aim / Shoot)
PC 2.0 is amazing, 60fps, textures original or moded, controll mouse are newer
PS4 run at 60fps, based on PC 2.0, maybe some drops. But some glitch sound doens't exist on PC 2.0

Haven't played One / Switch version

Capcom not giving us pointer controls for the Switch was such a bitch move. I'd say the Wii version is the best but it does make the game a whole lot easier. If you want to reexperience the game/tension maybe go with PC or the Switch.

#1. Wii version is trash... textures are muddy and the waggle is shit... RE4 was released on GC and it was still game of the Year so "waggle" does not take it to another tier.
#2. PC version is pretty good. Even though I have it on everything... I still did not finish the PC version.
#3. If you have PS4-Switch... and want to decide between those, easily go with PS4. It is 1080p 60 fps. Switch version is maybe 1080p and it runs at 30 fps with hiccups. that goes for RE5 as well.
#4. The updated "textures" are forgettable unless you pause... look at them and pull up the non modified version. ... and waste human life...

PC version with the HD textures mod

The Wii version may be fine as a diversion but IMO it loses a lot by simplifying aim that much as the game was designed with aim to be somewhat unprecise and the Wii just removes that

I was playing a fresh save this past year and it's definitely not cakewalk easy for the avg player. I don't mind admitting that I'm not an expert at the game, so maybe that's why I died a few times, but you still suffer from low ammo and swarms of enemies throughout the game. It doesn't turn into a gallery shooter until you have A LOT of spare bullets and upgraded weapons. Ammo-conservation tactics (like shooting in the knee/knocking down and finishing off with a knife) are still risky maneuvers and are tricky to pull off reliably.

And it cannot be overstated: MERCENARY MODE. I've spent more hours in RE4's Mercenary mode than in all the various replays of the campaign.

I swear by the Gamecube original. Wii version is a close follow up, but in general, the Gamecube version is a beast to this day...from using the Cube controller to aim with that immaculate analog stick, to the slightly increased difficulty on the normal mode compared to later versions, and other minor differences like seeing the A and B and L and R buttons in the prompts adds to the atmosphere of the original version of the game imo

This is a tricky one. The Wii version is fun because of the aiming but it makes the whole game easier,. The downside is there's some waggling involved at certain points. I don't own the PC version so can't comment, so I'd go for the PS4. There is a bug where sometimes the laser sight moves around a bit, but I never experienced it (or if I did I didn't notice it).

Wii version via Dolphin if you don't mind some waggle or PS4.

Thanks all - I won't be digging out my Wii for this personally, I'm just not looking for motion controls right now, and will probably look at PC w/ HD texture pack, but it's really interesting to see that that's the version so many people landed on.

Shit sounds like I need to hook my Wii up to my CRT...

not looking for motion controls

It's mainly IR controls and the motion actually feels good in this game. You get a quick knife attack which doesn't even exist in other versions and it makes it very easy to just destroy crates since the game snaps that quick knife attack to the nearest crates.

It's nothing more than a flick of the wrist.

The controls are highly praised for a reason!

Gamecube/Wii versions are my favorites. RE4 is built around that hardware and GC/Wii also have the best controllers for the game. Modern console & PC versions are perfectly fine though - more convenient, higher resolution and frame rate.

I went from the PS2 version to the PS4 version and it was a massive improvement. Graphics, frame rate, etc. are things you'd expect, but there were some things that were removed from the PS2 version compared to the GC version - water effects/puddles, cows, chickens, etc. - which are present in the PS4 version. I really enjoyed discovering those details in the PS4 version.

I first played it on Gamecube, and I had a blast. It's one of my fav games ever..

But, I vote for Wii version, nostalgia and all. It's just the better version.

The pc ultimate version was patched with shaders missing on release. It's the best version now probably

Pretty much what it comes down to -- they did it right the first time in the GameCube. About ports...try the Switch version. Not hearing great things about the PS4 version.

Was made around the Gamecube controller, therefore it is the best version

Extra modes and HD cant close the gameplay gap, the Wii option is a good alternative mode cause it kind of changes the games dynamic and is a valid version to go with

I have the Switch version for the sake of finally having RE4 portable, but yea it's not my favorite version of RE4. If they added motion aiming to it, then it could've been better

I also liked the Wii version the best, but there's also merit in the HD texture project version.

Waggle controls made the game easy as fuck though. Not necessarily a negative point - the controls felt more responsive with waggle.

I hate to use this excuse, but playing again on Professional mode restores much of the tension and difficulty.

That's like, the default mode :P

I thought you could use the gamecube controller on the Wii version if the Wiimote wasn't your cup of tea or am I remembering that wrong?

The only drawback I can think of with the PC version is that some of those wonderful reload animations are locked at 30fps, so running the game at 60fps results in that standing out. That aside, I'm not sure why people are saying Wii with so much gusto. The resolution and frame rate boosts more than make up for minor things that may or may not be lacking. Wiimote aim is cheating anyway.

I love playing the Wii version for the controls and I can play it on Dolphin even though it's still not the most ideal thing in the world, it's worth it for the gameplay...

But the PC version with the HD Project mod will take the crown when it's finished. If only we could have them visuals with the Wiimote.

I have put off playing RE4 literally for years now waiting for this project to be done so I can donate some money and enjoy it in its full greatness. I suggest waiting for the Mod too.
