Resident Evil 4 - Wii or PS2?

Victrix

*beard*
I've been craving a replay of this, but I figured it might be worth checking out the 'new' versions.

The question then - would I be happier with the PS2 or Wii version? How are the controls on the Wii? Lots of stupid waggle, or comfortable laser pointer aiming that makes it easier and/or more fun? Or are the additions in either version not worth bothering with and I should just dust off my GC memory card?

I need to suplex some ganados!

Wii version. It has all the extra content of the PS2 version with the better visuals of the GC version. Personally, I really liked the pointer controls from the Wii version. The waggle aspect didn't bother me either since it's pretty minimal. It's only used for QTEs and an added quick knife feature (which is actually useful). Even if you wind up not liking the pointer controls, you still have the option to use the GC controller.

yup.

Does the Wii version change the number of enemies based on what control you are using?

I was going to play through the Wii using Gamecube control style until I heard they added enemies to account for easier shooting with the Wii controls, so I decided I'd probably just go with the Gamecube version since that is the version built around that control-style.

Despite not having a 16x9 option, I'm guessing the Gamecube version would provide the most "proper" experience.

Pick the PS2 version is you cannot live without the dualshock. For everything else, pick the Wii since as already mentioned, you can opt for the GC controller if you hate the waggle.

I'm not sure if they added enemies, but iirc, they give you less ammo.

They reduced the amount of ammo pickups to compensate for easier aiming

ah ok...

still it seems that would only add to the diffculty if using the GCN-style controls so I'm probably sticking with the Gamecube version...

the ultimate version of RE4 would ideally include the GCN-style controls along with original ammo status AND 16x9 (in other words, what the Gamecube release should have been in the first place)...

That's cool, didn't realize you could use both, and the waggle usage sounds pretty benign

Does it auto-sense which controller you're using and adjust the ammo pickups?

Did they add anything to the Wii version beyond the PS2 additions?

PS2:
Extra content

GC:
Better graphics
Better loading times
Much more responsive controls

Wii:
Extra content
Better loading times
Best controls, but if you don't like, can revert to the GC pad.
Brilliant boxart

Joke post or did you honestly not know that the Wii version is fucking superior in every possible way?

Wii version.

Wii-version (with Gamecube controller!)
wat. That's like playing Crysis with a 360 pad instead of a mouse.

Although I only have the GCN version I think the answer is the Wii version.

I don't think it does. I noticed when I got the Wii version that I seemed to be running out of ammo more than I did in the GC version. When I mentioned it in the official thread for the Wii version, I was told that the ammo/money drop rate in the Wii version was based on the PS2 version in which less ammo is dropped but the amount of money that drops is increased to offset it. I don't think they added anything on top of the PS2 extras.

If you can revert to GC controls on Wii, then it's the obvious choice.

Wii version is the way to go.

I can't say for the entire population if the Wii version is the superior version, but basing it on personal experiences (I own the GC and Wii version) I would advise tp pick up the Wii version. It has the extra content of the PS2 (which is fun to play) and more importantly, I think the Wiimote-nunchuk combo works perfect.

Actually it's based of the PAL GCN version (This was the first version to feature the "Less Ammo/More Money" change as well as a load of other bug fixes and changes, check GFAQs for details on it) All other versions since then have featured these changes (I think the Players Choice US version features these changes as well)

Personally, I think it's much better this way. Reduces the frustration of having to go through the game over and over again to get everything and it makes ammo conversation a challenge (NTSC GCN version is waaayy too easy!)

Anyway, Wii version is definitely the way to go. The controls are so much better than the standard controls that I actually fear going back to them for RE5! (I would seriously consider a downgrade in graphics for RE5 if it meant having RE4Wii's controls, they're that good! :D)

Wii version with absolutely no doubts. If you're in the minority that prefers traditional controls after trying them both, then the GC version is STILL the best because you can utilize the Classic Controller as well, which might be of preference for some.

The Wii version is one of the best uses of the Wiimote there is. It's that good that when RE5 comes out it's going to annoy me that I'm going to have to play it with a pad.

Or wait for RE4 Classic Edition on 360/PS3.

i own all versions of RE4 except PC. among all the versions i have, i love the ps2 version the best. i hate the gimic wii controll and i think the wii's classic controller is a dual shock rip off

Wii version, using the wiimote&nunchuck.

I only own the GC version to compare it to, but ... it's like night and day. The improved control mechanism is great. I cannot play the cube version anymore.

Edit: wait, how did that happen? o_O

Doublepost, sorry.

This is playing RE4 on the Gamecube after playing RE4Wii:

Really? The PS2 version is graphically inferior. Especially with regards to lighting. I couldn't disagree more about the controls. The Wii mote was made for this game

I bought the game for the first time a few weeks ago, and I'm not sure what to think of the waggle. It's mostly used to shake enemies off when they have a hold on you or to dodge enemies or obstacles, so its variant is dependent on how many times you encounter those situations. I actually objected more to the game surprising me with waggle events during cutscenes since I usually put the controller down. I expected to be able to move while aiming, but then I remembered that I'm dealing with Resident Evil. Once I got past that, I really enjoyed combat. I don't have a point of reference to compare it to, however, since it is the only version I played.

Really? SNES, have you played it?

So many wrong things in this post.

1. RE4 Wii
2. RE4 GC
3. RE4 PS2

I like the fact that once I cleared the game, I can have easy access to all CG movie, unlike GC version.

Second post said it all.

Mercenaries with WiiMote controls=ultimate win.

That's not inherent to the Wii version - all versions feature QTE's during cut-scenes. I love it, always keeps you on your toes.

Wii version's controls makes the gamecube version feel like it was made 20 years ago.

The Wii version basically contains the PS2 version + the cube version, with all the best parts of both.

Every version of RE4 released so far that isn't the Wii version is significantly worse than it.
