Resident Evil 6 DEMO VER. Thread: Capcom's final chance for redemption

Umm, how do you use cover? I'm playing as Piers but when I get to low walls all I can do is hurdle them.

Oh never mind, you have to press L1 then x.

The annoying thing is, minor tearing aside, RE5 was probably one of the most polished games this generation. The camera was never offensive, the graphics were great, the animations were great (especially the melee ones) and the controls were tight. How they managed to take such a giant step backwards...

Just played the Leon part. It is worse than what I excepted honestly and this is coming from someone who played RE5 to death.

Also, is the game supposed to be THAT dark? I had to crank up the in-game brightness to actually see what was happening in most areas. I'm playing on PS3 if it matters.

Agreed. I'm hoping the final version is different, though it would have to be greatly improved.

And the darkness thing doesn't bother me, in fact I welcome it in Leon's part since it adds to the game I think. And in Jake's part you can easily see the enemies against the lights.

RE5 controlled just fine indeed, the real problem it had was level design and enemy encounters that weren't conducive to its control scheme(unlike RE4). RE6 on the other hand is just a mess on a basic, mechanical level.

Let me first say that this game makes me very happy to have a plasma TV. The blacks were black and I freaking love it.

Alright I just played the Leon demo and I have no clue what all the bitching is about. The game plays well, feels tight, aiming and camera feel responsive, and the zombies are hard to kill. At the end I thought I would just run around and take out all the zombies before heading for the car, but they swarmed the hell out of me and I just had to make a run for it.

The car QTE was pretty silly but that's probably my only complaint with this part of the demo. I really have no idea where most of the bitching about the controls comes from.

I don't know but It did force me to adjust my tv colors.. and yeah it is bad

We aren't really bitching about the Leon demo, just play the other demos to see where the bitching begins...

I got a question that may be potentially stupid, but does anyone know if the UK demo can play online with NA one? My brother is getting the NA one, but I got the UK one so I could play it a few hours earlier and I don't want to have to download it again (it takes so long!)

I don't know if the PS3 demo is still exclusive to Dragon's Dogma buyers, but here's a code I never used: R7C3-JRNR-JH99.

Played all three demos again tonight. I enjoyed Leon's even more than last time. I turned the camera speed down a little and the aiming speed down one notch as well, and I opted for laser sight. Felt more precise and familiar.

I played Chris' demo with default camera and aiming speed, with the crosshair, same as the first time. I liked it even less. You can't see shit, the frame rate is choppy, rocket launchers hit you but you can't see the trail to determine where they're coming from. I like a challenge, but not when the challenge is an eye test. Can you see this gray enemy against this gray backdrop of jaggies, shitty textures, and chugging framerate while your character blocks 1/3 of the screen? If so, you win.

Then I played Jake's again and quit before it was over.

I'm not cancelling my preorder yet but I don't know why I'm keeping it if the game is 2/3rds dogshit.

Oh, and lemme complain about the brightness adjustment screen. "Turn the brightness down so the 6 is barely visible." Hey fuckheads, the 6 is a drastically different shade than the background it's on, it will always be visible. That said, I played at 40 and it looked decent.

I'm nowhere near done playing the demo, but I am so thankful we can pause now.

edit: I am also thankful Hunnigan's neck is fixed. :lol

Having just finished the Leon demo, this game can't come out soon enough.

It really feels like a next-gen raccoon city,
and even the police car "escape"

The two other campaigns are just ... , I mean what is it trying to be ? Kane and Lynch 3 ?

I can't help but think of Kane & Lynch 2 / Gears of war while playing the other two.

I know leon's campaign will probably be short but at least we get something for the old school fans this time.

Seriously, WTF Capcom? RE5 had a shitty brightness adjustor as well.

The funniest thing about the Leon demo was how incompetent he is. Hesitating to shoot what is clearly a mad zombie despite having faced thousands of zombies and other various infected folk? Check. Dumb enough to walk through a metal detector. Check, though this is forced by the game (which is dumb). A horrible driver? Mega check.

It seriously isn't, though. I can't think of many third person shooters that give you this much control. Once you get used to it the combat flows much better than it did in RE5. The encounter scenario themselves are worth debating, but the movement mechanics are probably the best part of this game.

How can someone that obviously likes Vanquish like the controls in this thing? :P I couldn't stand them. I didn't even finish the Jake and Chris demos, it was nothing but a pain.

Indeed. Even if you hated RE5, you had to admit it was a fairly polished game. Hopefully, they can patch the game again and again to put it up to speed if it's still unpolished at release.

GAF likes to label every game as either the best or worst game ever but personally I don't think the two demos I've played paint it the worst game I've ever played or the best thing ever. As you stated the thing that struck me the most was that it was quite janky for a mainline RE game. The second demo is much better than the first for sure and increase my faith in the game a little bit as I had hated the first demo.

It seems they had a tight development schedule for this game and that they playtested the game late in the dev cycle. I know the retail game is supposed to have a fixed camera that you can pull back more but I mean how come no one told them about that way before? It really seems like a late fix as no demo has the option in yet. I guess if it was really rushed it would explain the apparent lack of polish overall.

Chris' and Jake's sections felt like high budget low budget TPS wannabes. Just bad on a fundamental level. Controls, camera, enemies, menus, etc. They're not unplayable, but they certainly aren't anywhere near the level of the games they're trying to imitate.

fyi, here's a link to the 360 demo. (quote to see)

Well, they just work, nothing more nothing less. I was in the same boat as many people here yesterday, feeling like the whole thing was a mess. Today though, I'm breezing past enemies, sliding all over the place and countering enemy attacks. Comparing it directly to RE5 you can navigate the environment much more effectively here. First impressions are lasting impressions though, and maybe the whole package is what's putting people off.

I was able to play it just fine. =P

Biggest complaint about the demo? There is indeed an option to get rid of the objective marker...but it removes the rest of the HUD as well. :/

You can get it back by pressing L2/LB, then it will briefly appear and the objective will also be displayed if you hold the button in. It's really a non-issue, though it would have been nice to pick-and-choose specific parts of the HUD to disable.

Thoughts.

Leon demo was fun. It was creepy and atmospheric in places. The pacing was off though. Terrible Heavy Rain inspired QTE done way worse. Still felt more like classic Resi which is good.

Chris demo. Felt like a b grade shoot em up. Framerate dipped but wasn't horrible. It tried to mimic an exciting blockbuster thrill ride experience but just didn't feel all that gripping. Didn't really enjoy.

Haven't tried the Jake demo yet.

General thoughts.
Shooting felt worse than 5 and way worse than games like Uncharted and Gears.

Cover system was horrible and didn't always work.

Menus are functional but not the best.

Animations range from good to average. Which is bad considering the games budget and production team size.

Graphics are decent. Sometimes impressive. Game's gamma settings even on full are way to dark - had to crank the tv up.

Music was pretty great and fit the scenarios very nicely. Good OST so far.

Yeah, this really sucks; the best solution I could come up with was the hit LB to bring up the objective marker, which kinda brings up the HUD for a few seconds.

That being said, for some reason, I really enjoyed this more than the Dragon's Dogma demo version. I think it's because Leon's section had more zombies to kill, so you got to try more combinations and attacks, which is where it really clicked for me. Hype!

Is it me or did it just feel I dunno...cheap? Something about it doesn't seem polished to me. The presentation, the menus, the graphics, the animation ...it all feels cheap.

"Cheap" is the word that comes to mind for me as well. It doesn't have the feel of an "A team" effort...I've had a feeling since it was first unveiled that this was a rushed production, and my fears have only worsened since playing the demo. It's got the feel of a cash-grab, plain and simple.

The link isn't there.

Wow. The DD demo left me with a much better impression than this one.

Leon's Demo: This is the only one that remotely felt like Resident Evil. I wouldn't have had a problem with it if it wasn't for all the scripted zombies. They're obviously gonna get up. Why the hell can't I just shoot them? The game forced me to take the hit when I walked by them. Sure you can walk around them, but why not just kill them before they even get up? The car QTE was awful as well. I also hate the fact that I can't do a running kick on zombies half of the time because they parry me or something. That's some skill for a zombie.

Chris's Demo: This shit isn't Resident Evil. The shooting felt fine but Chris's melee attacks are all really boring (not that this really matters). The boss fight was pathetic. All I did is walk back and shoot it till it ran away. The only reason I went upstairs was to get some loot.

Jake's Demo: I liked the lizard guys but the gun wielding enemies are really annoying. I'm not sure if it was the gun the enemy had or if it was Jake, but I kept falling down. These enemies made it hard to mess around with the melee. Besides the bullets firing at you from every direction, I don't have many complaints on Jake's demo. I find Sherry a lot more fun to use than Jake for some reason though. I think it's the stun rod.

This demo was supposed to determine whether I buy the game or not but I'm still on the fence. I hate how disappointed it's left me. I'm hoping for some honest reviews (not IGN) before the game comes out. I'll buy this depending on these reviews.

A cash grab would be one 8 hour campaign.

I don't think that's it, the cash grab. I think it's a Gran Turismo 5 scenario. Lot's of ideas, lots of modes, lots of new stuff, and while the package as a whole has a lot of spark there's the finishing sheen lacking. Or I guess for others it's just a Duke Nukem trainwreck but that's a few leaps too far for me.

My TV is well-calibrated and I still have difficulty seeing some of the zombies. They intentionally hide them in the dark corner of the game so you'll get surprised when you're walking nearby. I also hate how you can't shoot zombies on the ground but if that's the case, then don't re-animate them when certain events unfold. That's just cheap.

I actually don't have much of a problem with the control. The only thing I want them to fix (which is unlikely at this point) is the cover system. You should immediately be able to run into cover and hide behind it for Chris' section to function properly. Or alternatively, if they want us to run and gun like Drake in Uncharted 3, then don't set a game with limited ammo. The system becomes completely useless when this happens.

Could anyone answer this?

No there is not. In the full game, yes. But in the demo you're restricted to online co-op.

Yeah, well, they've been doing it since even the first few games. I know that's not really an excuse, but I guess sometimes they don't learn.

If that campaign was polished and refined, it wouldn't be a cash grab.

This game is like Capcom decided they needed a new mainline RE before the gen was over so they took a cue from Ubisoft and just put everybody they possibly could on development to crank out a "content filled" (read: bloated) game to win over gamers and convince them they're getting "bang for their buck" despite the lack of refinement it obviously has from everything I've seen and played thus far.

The size of the shit pile doesn't change what it is.

What else does Capcom PR have to sell people on? They obviously can't sell anyone on the game looking good; the gameplay has looked like an unpolished mess since the first trailer, and from what I just played, it hasn't improved on that.

Filling the disk w/ content is about all this game has going for it. But to be honest, I'd hate to play more than 8 hours of this.
