Resident Evil 6 DEMO VER. Thread: Capcom's final chance for redemption

Near the end in Leon's level, you'll see a cutscene of the zombies running for the gate... it looked like Capcom just fast forwarded their normal walking animations there. Can't help noticing it, as it looked incredibly shitty.

People complaining about the graphics need to take into account that this game has the biggest areas in the series. Chris's section alone is one giant map with no loading screens in-between and dwarfs anything in BH4 or BH5.

What kind of an excuse is that?

I prefer one or two loading screens between sections to zero compelling textures from start to finish.

Earlier I was wondering what it would take to satisfy "true" fans of this series, came up with this:

- Open-world remake of RE0-3. Make it all one big game.
- Fox Engine
- Developed by Platinum/Grasshopper

The only revelation is that people actually liked Revelations.

Hahaha I noticed that too. Capcpom strikes again!

You are losing us here. Screw the budding open world fad.
Probably would have sold at least 750k by now had the same game been put on the Wii. Would have sold double that amount as a mid budget launch game for the Wii U.

you should drop by the massive OT for the game some time. it seems a much less controversial stance than liking RE5 in my own experiences of liking them both.

I thought some of Revelations was okay. I liked it kind of at the beginning when it sort of felt like old school RE, but that shit went right out the window so fast.

There are people (RE fans) disliking Revelations?

What is this? Bizarro thread?

It is just below par with RE4 or RE5. I could see people really not liking it, anyway. RE6 will probably end up the better game.

EDIT: I think the key to dodging in this game is ducking, then pushing a direction. Pretty neat that it works that way. Still can't figure out how to counter. I don't see any prompts anyway.

It was below par with RE4, right. And miles above RE5 (which I still like). And had a lot of RE1/2 "feel" to it, which made it so outstanding.

The second sentence of your post is pure crazy talk.

I countered accidentally by repeatedly mashing the duck command while surrounded. In videos of mercenaries mode it looks like a prompt appears when enemies swing at you, so clearly it's mean to be a simple command based on timing. In my time with the demo I don't think I saw any such prompts, though. I'm not sure if you have to be in weapon-readied stance or if you can just be standing there.

I'll be very surprised if I enjoy this game less than Resident Evil 5, which I find to be garbage (aside from solid and fun gameplay). Everything I've seen and experienced with Resident Evil 6 so far indicates I will enjoy it way more.

You mean "it has a lot of backtracking". RE4 and RE5 are more similar then people would ever care to admit. To describe it briefly, what they have and RE:R lacks is the quality of enemies and how you interact with them. It is not until you unlock raid mode do you really see the game's enemies become interesting and, unfortunately, raid mode is wildly unbalanced thanks to a crazy loot system. RE:R does have some nice atmospheric moments(along with some really stupid "cliffhanger" moments that counter it), but nothing spectacular.

"Playing the game is garbage, except for playing the game". lol, you got to love the mental gymnastics the word gameplay enables.

RE5 was bad. Way bad.

RE fans have become insane to me in the last couple of years. I think I actually started hearing about how RE4 ruined the RE series for the first time about 18 months ago. I couldn't believe it then and I can barely believe it now. Now we can look at games like ORC selling a shit ton of copies in the first month and I just don't know who the hell buys these games any more. It's all entertainment now... which is okay, I guess.

Just played through the Jake scenario, and I can see why people think it's terrible. I personally enjoyed it, but only just. I still think the controls are fine and I had no problem running around killing mofos, but again the fact that turning off on-screen displays also turns off the HUD annoys me to no end; I can never tell when I'm low on health and need to pop a herb, and when I can wait. So I end up popping herbs after every hit I take.

Also those Chrysalid things are damn annoying, but relatively easy to take down if you just wail on them with the machine gun.

But what REALLY annoys me in this game is the constant falling down. It wasn't too bad in the Chris scenario as it only happened a few times, but god damn Jake takes a tumble every time he takes a hit. Really, this is the son of Wesker? I wouldn't be surprised if he was disowned pretty quickly after hitting puberty. If you hold A and back while he's falling you can do a sort of roll backwards and get right back up, but it's still pretty annoying.

Anyway, I need to play through the demo with the alternate characters and see how I feel about them.

Revelations started out alright, but was then destroyed by the seemingly never-ending scenario jumping around to bar none the worst characters in the entire series. It dropped the spooky exploration in a jiffy in favor of scenarios where you're playing as the Resident Evil equivalent of Transformers 2's offensively stupid robot twins.

It was quite horrible and I could never bring myself to touch that crap again.

I think you are being too harsh. Except for the controls, the camera, the textures, the animations and the framerate the game is not bad.

I wonder if anyone on the Capcom team has ever played the Dead Space games? Now those controls are fantastic, especially the second game.

It's exactly how it works and there are also two types of dodging one is jumping when you are holding pistols and one is duck/strafe when you are holding melee weapon.
Also try to jump forward and then in the middle of the jump push the left stick down. It's great move to quickly create some distance between opponents behind you.

I should have been more specific. More open, less linear. Give us alternate paths to our objectives, while also letting us explore more.

On-topic, I think I've finally mastered the controls and gotten comfortable with the cover system. Seems like playing as Piers makes things a little easier, probably because the AMR is overpowered. Anyway, if all goes well I should have the game next week, can't wait.

Edit: On the subject of controls, has anyone tried putting everything on Classic?

I was a Resident Evil die hard fan since the first changed my life back in the PS1 days. The series was perfect. It was scary and full of atmosphere. It was survival horror.

I downloaded this demo last night expecting them to return to what made the Resident Evil series so special. What has Capcom done? This game is not Resident Evil. I don't know what this is. Why are there explosions at every turn? And why the fuck does Leon DDT zombies? I tried playing Chris's story and I thought I was playing Killzone or Call of Duty.

Maybe its just the demo but this game does nothing for me and thats a shame. I wish they would bring back the old style of RE, pre-rendered backgrounds and all.

Eh to be clearer, the general mechanics feel solid when moving, shooting, etc. It doesn't feel janky at all. However, that's where the fun ends. The story, the environments (dear God the middle of the game), etc. kill all excitement and enjoyability in the game. No matter how good controlling Chris/Sheva may be, playing as them in what game we got can put me to sleep. It's completely boring.

I would have preferred Capcom to throw RE5's controls and camera setup in to RE6 and add some of the new shit to the controls and that would have been perfect.

But yeah, I guess in a blunt sense, playing the game is garbage except for playing the game. :P

It's mentioned earlier, but it seems like Capcom was shooting for those types of controls, but didn't quite make it there. Actually, it just feels like a flawed attempt to upgrade DS controls by trying to make it more mobile, what with diving and such. But DS controls are amazingly tight (possibly one of the best controlled games out there), and RE6 is nowhere near matching it, at least not in this demo. Hopefully final release comes close.

I posted this in the "Leon drives a car" thread:

Just played the demo. There's actually a lot of potential here, and perhaps adjustment will cure some ills, but the main thing is the analog stick is so sesitive that it's impossible to just -walk-, and the camera is so close to the character that it's hard to see the environment. Everything becomes a nauseating blur in the dark or when action breaks out (I.E. all I see is Chris' back and an explosion).

But I LOVED the giant monster in Chris' campaign. The basic act of shooting is fairly fun, too. The guns seem to pack some punch, which is nice. I quite liked the setting in the Leon and Chris demos; I especially liked the Chris demo with the snowy village during the day. I'll admit I kept dying in Jake's demo and haven't completed it yet, but the "China at night" setting was OK. Bottom line is, there is a sense of place.

I recommend turning off the HUD completely; originally I only did this because I wanted to remove the objective marker, but the fact is it's easy enough to tell how much ammo you have because you can just use the Dpad to access your item screen while aiming. If you get lost, you can hold L2 to bring up computer vision that will show you the way.

There is NO screen-tearing on PS3, and the image quality is fast and smooth. No concerns about the game's performance. It's almost -too- fast. So what they need to adjust is how fidgety the controls are -- I feel like I'm sprinting just tapping the stick (to -really- sprint, hold X). And please, move the camera back.

Oh, one other note: The game jump-scared me A LOT in Leon's chapter. Some strategically placed/timed zombies in there. I also was legitimately scared of the giant monster halfway through Chris' chapter. That encounter was my favorite part of the demo. Amazing creature design.

All told, though, I miss RE4/RE5-style gameplay, but we'll see where this goes.

Sorry, but where have you been for the last decade?

Did you seriously expect RE6 to have pre-rendered backgrounds and all?

Are you aware that RE4 and RE5 exist?

I just can't handle the controls. I feel like the good old "shoot in head > run up > kick in head" doesn't work like it used to.

The only revelation is that people actually liked Revelations.

Yeah, I think the game is serviceable, but the high praise for it is a little baffling.

It feels like people are so desperate for a return to old school RE that they're willing to inflate their impression of Revelations.

Okay, I think I got better at the game (I hope). But I'm left with this massive headache now. This is the 1st time I got a headache playing TPS. Normally I only get this with FPS. But in a way, the camera placement makes the game more like first-person instead of third-person.

Hell yeah. I'll go on record and say DS2 has the best controls of any third person shooter type game I've played.

I don't know how much of this RE6 demo's controls will be tweaked in the final game but I feel not much will be different from this demo to retail.

OK, I feel weird commenting since I have a Revelations avatar (which is more a tribute to a joke in the game than anything else), but really... Revelations was fantastic.

You had the solid RE4/RE5 controls, only now you had complete camera control (on the touchscreen, or via CPP), and you could strafe while walking or aiming. The controls worked beautifully, S-ranking all of the Raid levels on every difficulty (I played without the CPP; you don't need it).

You have this gorgeous ship environment, full of atmosphere and legitimate dread ("Maaaaaay daaaaaay!"), as well as numerous jump scares. The creatures were nasty as hell, and I loved it. And the quick side chapters referencing other characters in other times and places were badass: Chris exploring snowy caverns, Parker fighting Hunters in an office building at sunset, etc. So fun to replay.

I'd also argue RER -easily- has the best plot of the whole series (not much competition, I know). The episodic nature created a sort of compulsive page-turning effect where I wanted to see "just one more chapter," and before I knew it hours had gone by. The game did a superb job of jumping back and forth between the different plot threads, always leaving on a cliff-hanger, but then the story as a whole wraps up nicely, with a fleshed-out ending that tied up all loose ends... while deliberately leaving one open. You know the one.

RER was a densely designed, deftly paced, thoughtfully presented, and absolutely gorgeous-looking/sounding game. I loved the Dante's Inferno theme running throughout. I loved all of the new characters. I loved the balance between old and new. THIS should be the direction of the series.

Shame it sold poorly.

Someone else can make the new topic for it, but Sven has posted an update about the PC version. It sounds like we will have to wait a while for it.

It is a small, but appropriately sized team working on the RE6 PC project. It is a different group than originally planned, lest it would have taken even longer than it currently will but this team will do a better job than what was being considered originally.

The process did not begin until after the console versions were complete, submitted, approved by console 1st parties to use that final codebase as the starting point.

It will be some time still before we provide details on release dates and PC specific parameters.

Projects like this you guys seem to think are "trivial" but they are not. When they get treated as trivial, you end up with Resident Evil 4 PC... which I don't think too many true fans were pleased with.

Are you aware that RE4 and RE5 exist?

No I did not think they would go back thats why I said "I WISH" they would go back. This is no longer Resident Evil. I played RE 4 religiously when it came out It was incredible, but RE 4 never had the atmosphere and scare factor that the earlier RE's had. I mean the scare factor and pre rendered backgrounds were the foundation that made the games popular in the first place. Hell even the REmake is still better then these next gen games.

The worst thing about RE6 is how it's never satisfying to kill anything. Or rather, the extreme lack of hit detection.

It felt like like I was shooting filled garbage bags, RE4 is still better than RE6 in that regard. In RE4, shooting a dude's arm will yield completely different results than a torso shot or a shot in the leg. In RE6, it's completely gimped in that department.

I think the episode format really hurt it, mainly because they simply had no reservation with pulling some really cheesy shit. The game has an absurd amount of misleading scenes, some resolved in ways that become comical with how many times they use them.

I don't hate it, but I don't think it meets the standard set by the console entries it draws its formula from. It is... alright.

I am an avid RE5 hater (well, everything bar Mercs anyway), but I am starting to think RE6 might be even shittier. Although RE5 was a sprite rip fest, I liked the RE4 mechanics such as shooting legs and then uppercut.. or shooting the face and then falcon punch... RE6 is so by the numbers that you can do either retarded melee combo or just pump lead anywhere. Stomping the enemies lacks impact as well. I'd wager that the zombies look less detailed than they did in RE4, goes for their hit animations as well.

I just played it again today, with Helena now... and can't help to feel this is garbage.

RE4, I replayed the HD port just 2 months ago... its still so good. The controls are ofcourse wooden because you cannot move and shoot at the same time, but its view is very clear and aiming feels rather natural.

They should port RE4 HD (ie, something based off the GC/Wii version, not PS2, eww) to PC to amend for their past mistakes. It'd be nice to have the GC version with 1080p+AA/AF, which the console versions of RE4 HD don't have, and not have to worry about emulation glitches and other things. :/

It'd make me happy forever!
