RESIDENT EVIL 7: Beginning Hour Midnight Version [Final Update] Cryptic Grave Puzzle

There's a lock pick in the basement? Where? I've been going into the VHS tape to get one every time I play the demo.

When you kill the creature in the basement, have you actually seen it die and fall on the ground? When I got the true ending, it seemed like it screamed at me and lunged and then was just gone. Like it vanished into thin air.

The basement lock pick is on the furnace, right after you come down the stairs but before you go through the door into the room with all the hanging bodies.

I went into the VHS world and completed the full tape 4 times before getting the 5th giggle to trigger, I never saw the ghost girl (but that doesn't mean I just didn't miss her).

I've done multiple speed runs trying different methods of triggering the laugh to no avail. It seems like everyone is doomed to spend more than 35 minutes in this demo before getting the coin..

just finished it without any ghost sightings and got the coin. unless I missed the ghosts but I was looking very hard.

You probably did miss it. It flashes and is gone in the blink of an eye honestly, it's very easy to miss, even if you're paying fairly close attention.

I went into the VHS world and completed the full tape 4 times before getting the 5th giggle to trigger, I never saw the ghost girl (but that doesn't mean I just didn't miss her).

Took me 4 tries too, finally saw the ghost (twice) in the last run and got the giggle. If she did appear earlier and I didn't notice it would have to be the window sighting.

I just got the coin for my friend who was getting frustrated during the third giggle.

For the fifth giggle I tried going immediately to the doll after the the mirror, which was a long shot.
Then I went into the VHS and interacted only with the pot, which is what I had done in my personal coin run.
That didn't work, so I went a third time and interacted with the pot and got the lockpick, but didn't use it. The fifth giggle then worked.

There was a ghost during my initial VHS run to get the axe at the start, but none during the last two. I have all the spots memorized from when the demo first came out, and was actively looking for them, but it's still possible that they flickered too fast. After all, I was using SharePlay and the image quality wasn't the greatest.

Go back to the door you came in through and mash the X button a lot. The family man will hold you in for a few seconds before leaving, at which point you'll kick the door. It'll open with the second kick. Run out and the monster will despawn.

If you're feeling feisty, press X at the hanging bodybag to kick it into the monster (line up so it's between you and the monster) to knock it to the ground while the family man is doing his animation. That'll give you enough time to kick down the door without getting hurt.

Oh I was chopping like a mad man at it lol. Cut its arm off but then died. Didn't think you could escape until afterwards.

Resident Evil has always had gothic elements, but it's never delved into the supernatural.

As for the demo, I personally don't think it's a ghost. Since it's a tape of a sleazeball "reality show" it's likely part of the production, and the ghost (VFX) is perhaps a female actress... which also adds to the idea that maybe she's a survivor and you play as her (or find her). Little did they know they actually stumbled into the home of a murderous family.

I think the LSD reference at the end of the true ending explains away the ghosts. I doubt there will be ghosts in the final game. Hope not anyhow.

From what I gather there are other tapes to play in the main game, but I really hope we don't have to play them more than once as it's pretty boring. I'd say that about the whole game. The first playthrough will probably be fantastic, but unless there is skill involved in taking down enemies I'm wondering about the replayability of this. It's the same with any puzzle, the fun is in figuring it out, once it's solved what is left.

Well done everyone for figuring out this puzzle. I must admit I didn't think it would be so obscure. Running around that house chopping everything with an axe isn't any kind of fun. I'll be grabbing that coin before the full game hits.

Finally got the coin... do I need to do something to save the game or does it automatically saved that I got the coin once I finished a run even if I get a bad ending?

Have you looked to see if there's a save file? If not, it must be a server thing.

I've done everything in the OP so far. Everything worked just as described. The only thing I didn't get was the last giggle.

I'm not talking about the dirty coin you get for solving the riddle. Like many others I'm stuck on the fifth giggle.

I've seen multiple people say that there is a coin you can interact with during the VHS segment.

Yeah, I don't know what they're talking about with that, either. I've never found a coin in VHS world.

There is no coin in the VHS world afaik. Right now we believe that going through the VHS world is somehow linked to the fifth giggle unlocking in the present world, which ultimately results in obtaining the coin.

I believe that it was automatically saved in the game data, and RE7 will read that data when played. Similar to Carbuncle in the FFXV Platinum Demo.

The OP doesn't mention anything about a coin being in the VHS world.

I think you guys are getting confused. The coin isn't in the video. You have to go through the video to unlock the coin.

And now I can't get the third giggle to activate.

Fuck this cryptic shit. If the actual game is as obnoxious I'm not touching it with an 8 ft pole.

The first time i entered the VHS world i tried to look at the basement doll, hit it, nothing happened.

Second time i entered the VHS world i saw the ghost outside the house, went to the basement in real world, hit the doll and heard the giggle. Don't know if it's the ghost apparition that triggered the giggle.

Got the coin though, thanks for your explanation.

Well, I'm a moron. I've been reading/writing "coin" too much these past two days, lmao.

I meant pot. Sorry.

I did exactly what you did. Messed with the pot and got the lock pick. I also saw the ghost twice on the same journey in the VH world. I got the giggle.

I got the axe, and gun and only 7 bullets if that helps.

It seems the ghost stuff may be related, will add it to the OP.

Stanley see's what you did there.

I wouldn't worry about this stuff being in the game, it wasn't in the original demo and I think they just added it due to the shenanigans people did with the original demo. The game was already about done from what I hear around the time the first demo released, and think it's just a complicated process for some bonus in the main game.

I do want to figure out what is the hidden trigger for the third giggle. I haven't had any difficulty with it, and apparently most people get it to trigger with my instructions, but maybe there's some factor since some for some reason have such difficulty getting it to trigger. I don't know what the variable is, though.

I got every giggle according to your instructions except the last one.

I got it by going into the VHS world, interacting with the pot and got the lockpick. Also saw the ghost in two different spots. After that I went to the doll and immediately got the giggle.

Just got the fifth giggle. Saw the ghost three times in my last VHS run.

However, I had to hit it with the axe while crouching to get it to trigger. Is that normal?

Am I missing something with the third giggle? I have the axe and the gun and I already pointed the finger at the body but no matter what I do or how I position and swing the axe in front of the picture, nothing happens.

Which lockpick did you use to get the axe?

In my runs where I triggered the third giggle I used the one from the basement, when I used the one from the VHS it wouldn't trigger.

I used the lockpick from the VHS in both my coin runs. Getting the axe is the very first thing I do before I start hitting the giggle spots.

In this person's playthrough, he doesn't even watch the VHS at all before triggering the third giggle. He despawns the monster by getting the attic key, then uses the basement lockpick to get the axe before swiping the axe at the picture to get the third giggle at 20:49: https://youtu.be/s3gkYAaFtd8?t=12m35s

Maybe you have to despawn the monster before using the axe or gun on the picture to trigger the third giggle?

That would make sense, Danthrax. When my friend tried it yesterday, he said he would just get the key when he went back downstairs for the fifth giggle. He never got the third giggle.

He got giggles out of order?? He got the first, second, fourth and fifth but not the third?

Playing through the VHS tape after pointing to the second murder site seems to be the only thing that can prevent the third giggle from triggering.

EDIT: I'd also like to point out that the attic key doesn't seem to matter. In a failed playthrough, I didn't grab it after the second murder site. I did the VHS tape immediately after, but the third giggle wouldn't trigger after that. My brother didn't grab it either, but he didn't do the VHS tape until after the fourth murder site.

OK, so I've come up with a list for speedrunning the demo in an optimal route for 1) getting every item, 2) solving the Dirty Coin puzzle, and 3) getting the Good Ending. I don't know 100% if this works but I'm going to try it tonight when I get home from work. Let me know if I missed anything.

Edit: This route does not result in being able to trigger the Third Giggle; don't know why yet

> Pull chain in fireplace, then go into crawlspace and grab Fuse
> Exit crawlspace and put Fuse in fusebox, then leave room and go through infected door on the right
> Grab Blank Notebook from table drawer in hallway
> Turn around, exit infected door and grab Dummy Finger from table drawer near clock
> Go upstairs, press button, then go upstairs into attic
> Enter door on the right and grab Basement Key off table
> Grab Celluloid Object from behind TVs and combine Dummy Finger with Celluloid Object to create Dummy Hand, then read message on wall for First Giggle
> Go downstairs to first floor and point Dummy Hand at fallen bookshelf for First Murder Scene
> Go into cow slaughter room and grab Bolt Cutters, then cut chain from dresser and grab VHS Tape, then open pot in kitchen (just in case it has something to do with anything)
> Go upstairs into attic and down the dead-end hallway, looking at boarded-up lit-up door for Second Giggle
> Go downstairs to first floor and enter infected door, then unlock basement gate and go downstairs
> Grab Lockpick from furnace, go through door, then point Dummy Hand at body on gurney for Second Murder Scene
> Grab Valve, press X on door, back up and put hanging body between you and monster, kick body into monster, then kick the door twice to escape
> Grab Bullets on staircase, then go back down into room, grab Attic Key from shelves in the back, then run back out of room and upstairs
> Grab Bullets off shelf in hallway before going into bathroom, open drawer to grab Bullets, then grab Bullets from inside medicine cabinet
> Place Valve into pipe, then flush toilet and grab Handgun
> Exit through infected door and go into kitchen, then use Lockpick on drawer to get Axe
> Go to staircase and swing Axe at painting of woman with a bag over her head (or shoot it with Handgun) to get Third Giggle
> Go into room under staircase with voodoo dolls hanging from its ceiling and use Dummy Hand to point at boarded-up door to get Third Murder Scene
> Look at black mirror outside voodoo doll room, then press left control stick down and circle button to do a quick turnaround for Fourth Giggle
> Go upstairs to attic, then use Dummy Hand to point at intersection of blue and white wires above bed for Fourth Murder Scene
> Use Axe to destroy box with yellow tape next to bed and grab Bullets, then crouch next to bed to grab Bullets
> Go downstairs to first floor and enter TV room, then insert VHS Tape into VCR to enter VHS World
> Walk onto porch and look left over railing for Ghost No. 1
> In hallway, when Pete says "What's that?" turn around to look back toward door for Ghost No. 2
> In kitchen, open pot, then look out window near microwave for Ghost No. 3, then crouch between fridge and microwave to grab Lockpick
> When Pete walks out of kitchen, look up above doorway for Ghost No. 4
> When Pete shines flashlight at staircase, look at staircase for Ghost No. 5
> When Pete shines flashlight in voodoo doll room, look inside voodoo doll room for Ghost No. 6
> Go into crawlspace when Pete pulls fireplace chain and go down ladder — Ghost No. 7 may be visible just as you go down the ladder
> Back in the real world, go into crawlspace and look to the right to grab Front Door Key
> If you didn't see a ghost in VHS World, you probably should watch the VHS Tape again to try to see a ghost; otherwise, continue on with directions
> Go back through infested door and downstairs into the basement to where the Attic Key was, then crouch down and look at the doll on the ground for Fifth Giggle
> If Fifth Giggle doesn't trigger, go back upstairs and watch VHS Tape again, hopefully seeing a ghost this time
> If Fifth Giggle did trigger, go upstairs and into kitchen, then point Dummy Hand at pot to trigger Fifth Murder Scene
> Go upstairs to attic and open bloody door next to message on wall, then examine sign on rocking chair and grab Dirty Coin on it
> Exit the Dirty Coin room and go up ladder, then use Attic Key to escape the house

No, he couldn't get the third giggle, which prevented him from proceeding.

Oh, I get what you were saying now. He intended to get the Attic Key when he went downstairs for the Fifth Giggle, but never got that far because the Third Giggle wouldn't trigger for him, which probably was because you have to get the Attic Key to make the Third Giggle able to be triggered.

Maybe you have to despawn the monster before using the axe or gun on the picture to trigger the third giggle?

Nope. I've gotten the third and fourth giggles before despawning the monster.

This is how I got the 5 giggles. My friend did the exact same thing and it worked as well.

1st -> Read clue with blank notebook
2nd -> Grab VHS and go to the boarded door. (didn't grab the valve nor the key. Just went in to get the 2nd murder and leave. Jack locks the door and the monster spawns)
3rd -> Smack pic with axe (used the film lockpick, watched it whole way through. Used pot. No ghost sightings)
4th -> 180 at mirror
5th -> Went directly to the doll. No giggle. Smaked it. No giggle. When to the VHS tape. Kept repeating it untill I saw the ghost twice. Once on each run (my friend saw it twice on the same run). Went to the doll. No giggle. Smaked it. Giggle get.
ending -> grab coin and get familied.

IMPORTANT: I NEVER got the attic key or the valve, the monster would always spawn when I entered the "doll room" and I would get hit by it. I grabbed 2 bullets.

The ghost sightings HAVE to be done for the final giggle.
