Resident Evil 7 Spoiler Thread

Not this again.
It's chris, it's not chris, it's hunk, it's papa smurf, it's the doom marine...

We should open a thread just for this topic so people can post chris or not chris indefinitely.

Game's been out for just under a week. We should hold off on it.

The change in actors is because the new game was developed using photogrammetry. So all the English voices are done by the actors that portray the characters. Like Jack Baker:

They could've gone with Roger Craig Smith, I guess?

Is RCS a part of the ongoing voice actor strike? I figured he was; Japanese VA for Chris is the same.

Me watching the great "Redfield" debate when I have next to zero knowledge of RE outside of REV2 and RE7.

I finished the game today and loved it. I'm thinking about playing it again, since it's pretty short, to get some Steam Achievements I've missed. Is there a New Game Plus option, or do I have to restart from scratch? Also, do you get anything from playing it on Madhouse?

Edit: Also, there's a puzzle that I never even came close to figuring out. The shadow puzzle in the yard. Any clue about that one?

It's Chris.

The twist isn't supposed to be "Why is someone impersonating Chris", the twist is supposed to be "Why is Chris working for Umbrella", surely.

Playing 'Not a Hero' just to see a VHS movie of a naked Chris Redfield clone bursting out of a pupae isn't where this is headed, I don't think. Nor is it headed to "I'm Hunk, and I'm also someone who can confidently impersonate a dude who has appeared on televsion as a member of the BSAA'.

Nah, it's got to be Chris is doing the anti- biological threat thing for the money now - he's 'Not a Hero'. Or he's undercover. But 'Not a Hero' will not end with Chris punching a mirror and seeing a boulder in the reflection - it can't.

Just tagging this for later because im going to have a few questions later on today after I progress a little, I can feel it. Unless I somehow figure one small piece out which probably gets explained but I think I might of missed something haha

No NewGame+, but you unlocked a new difficulty which changes the game in several ways. All special unlockable Items like the Albert gun or the secret of defence coin are also available now from the get go (can be found in the first storage box).

MADHOUSE difficulty
-Game has less checkpoints
-You can only save at Cassette Recorders, and only if you have a Cassette Tape (new item).
-Enemies have more health, are faster, more aggressive and hit harder
-There're more antique coins in Madhouse Mode, and they're all in completely different locations to the other difficulties. The other difficulties have 18 antique coins, Madhouse Mode has 33 coins you can find.
-On-top of this, there are more bird cages in the game and new upgrades that aren't in the other difficulties. The bird cages also aren't all set in safe places, they are now spread apart around the levels.
-Item locations are remixed.
-There are remixes in enemy spawn points and numbers.

For the yard puzzle, use the Toy axe... ;)

Pretty much. That's why the "UmbrellaCo" logo on the side of the helicopter appears after such a long wait. Your reaction is expected to be, "oh cool, it's Chris!" That reaction is then followed up with "WAIT, WHAT. WHY?!"

Uh, now that you say it, I kinda hope it does. That sounds hilarious.

Item rewards from various challenges are automatically added to your storage box across all saves. You could be midway through the game on Madhouse, start another playthrough on Easy, beat the game in under four hours (not difficult at all), and reload your Madhouse save. Your storage box in Madhouse will then have the saw and x-ray specs.

As for Madhouse completion, you get infinite ammo. It's exactly what it says on the tin: you still need to reload, but your reserves are infinite. There's a reason you get it after beating the game on the hardest difficulty.

Also, not sure about that shadow puzzle in the yard. Guess I never found it.

I think there's no doubt that's Chris, simply Capcom made a new character design fitting the "realism" approch taken with RE7. The fact he works for Umbrella now, only means this is a new company (the logo now is blue instead of red, so I think this is a new Umbrella taking care of BOWs created by the old company: the fact they choose the same name of the old company it's dumb as hell, anyway).
I mean, it would be very stupid introducing a clone or something like that now, it's the last thing needed in RE universe honestly.

Just did my second playthrough. Since I'm going for the Platinum it was a collectables + no item box + no healing run. On easy of course. I finished it in 3 hours so I got the speed run trophy too without even trying, it was a lot of fun. All I need now is to play on Madhouse and I'll be done.

It's a pretty satifying trophy list but I wish it was a little bit harder. The trophies for 1 and 4 were quite challenging and very rewarding.

So why is this thread so big ? What is the main point of discussion?

As far as I can tell:
  • Who was responsible for the wrecked ship?
  • What actually set things in motion for the events of the game post-wrecked ship?
  • Is Ethan an Umbrella agent?
  • What's the connection (if any) between Lucas and the rival bioweapon company that created Eveline?
  • Who is "Redfield"?

I'm quite surprised Resi 7 has caused quite a stir story/lore-wise and has people talking. Early days it might be, but I'm at the very least intrigued in how all this ties together either as a stand-alone tale or as part of the wider Resi narrative.

Hopefully "Not a Hero" gives actual answers to this Chis debate and not just be a small slice of action based game play.

I'd also add HCF being mentioned by name again. I don't think any of us thought that name will be revisited after Code Veronica.

Guys, they spent an entire game setting up the idea that you can graft faces and voices onto other people, and we're still discussing if it's Chris just because it looks like Chris and sounds like Chris and the credits call him Chris?

Obviously someone's tired of being shut down by Chris romantically, so they made a clone.

I'm really surprised there are no videos or screens of the upcoming DLC pack, it is out in less than 3 days.

The DLC is just one 'escape' scenario, one enemy wave mode and one extra game mode, which by its name sounds like some kind of survival mode or a super hard difficulty (Ethan Must Die), I don't think any of this will have any kind of story relevance.

The escape mode is most likely going to be Clancy, the camera man from the derelict tape who gets burnt to death by Lucas.

I wouldn't honestly expect any kind of story expansions until Not a Hero, if that.

yeah sorry i didnt realise this was the spoiler thread, i just meant in general id like to see something, not necessarily story related.

Why will these need discussion? All of them has been explicitly explained in the game except the company behind Eveline

That's what a spoiler discussion thread is for ... to discuss things in the game and speculate on things which were not explicitly stated -_-

How much is the season pass in the U.S.? It's 40 bucks in Canada. Don't know if I can justify it if they're just short video tape segments

$29.99

What? What rival company?

It was not an Umbrella Ship? Eveline destroyed that... (or am i lost in the details...)

Well .. the only company mentioned by name in the files is HCF unless I missed something, and no it's not an Umbrella ship, at least not by name. There's no umbrella branding or logos on it. The only mention of Umbrella or visual cues are the helicopter picture you find in-game and then the actual helicopter at the end w/ Umbrella branding.

You Need the toy axe from Lucas' room

Yoooooo, that circular saw though. I just started a run on normal after speedrunning an easy run and hadn't used the circular saw yet. I was in the garage with Jack and he pulled me out of the car and I was like FUCK. I said fuck it and started slashing with the circular saw and it killed him and the car in like three seconds. I had no idea how strong it would be.

Yep, planning to use the saw and the 2 defense items and Skyrim my way through Madhouse.

Eveline destroyed the ship.

The ship then washed up in the bayou during the storm, where Lucas saw it and told Jack about it. They then went down there and found Eveline and Mia.

This is explained in the game.

No it's not. Where specifically is it said Eveline did it.
Why would she blow up the ship she is on? What benefit does she get from that?

Lucas knew about the ship, because he's the one who did it. He planned it all out. He had a reason to blow it, and would know where it ends up.

He was already working for corporation X at that time.

The end of the ship clearly shows them still on the ocean, most likely relatively close to the Baker swamp area. Ocean pushed the wreckage and debris to it. That's what it felt like to me.

Lucas destroying the ship seems far more unlikely IMO. How/why would he even do that ?

The whole flashback makes it seem like Eve somehow got loose or lost control, infected the whole ship which led to it running aground near the bayou.

Because he was already with a rival corporation to Mia's.

There's more indications in the game that Eve led to it than Lucas, all we know is that Lucas may or may not have been in contact, there's no file, no line of dialogue or any hint in the game that lead me to believe Lucas was somehow involved in the shipwreck.

Remember in the flashback, the guy Mia is with (Forgot his name) called Eve a bitch which led to Eve killing him on the spot via telekinesis, we can imagine something like that happened earlier which must have upset Eve, that IMO is far more plausible.
